hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Miracles happen: A1 onboard audio works!
posted by DaveAE on 25-Oct-2005 21:46:09 (30168 reads)
This might come as a shock, but I've uploaded a working via686b onboard audio driver for the AmigaOne! Only the first batch(es) of A1's actually have the AC'97 chip physically on the board.

Update: New VIA686B AHI driver on OS4depot

Unfortunately, it was taken off later on as Eyetech didn't think it was ever going to work. You could just try the driver to see if you have such a chip, but you can also have a look on the motherboard: left to the AGP-port, under the gfx card either is a small Sigmatel chip or an empty square. Most people won't have the chip though.

Some clever guy found out what was wrong. I'll mention him later on if he wants to be mentioned, I'm not sure at this moment if he does. Normally, the BIOS/firmware sets up some registers of the VIA that make it work (ACPI), unfortunately back then we thought it was a hardware issue.

This first version is very basic. It is playback only, has CD-in monitoring, but no volume controls etc. This will come soon in a later version.

If you're lucky to have the AC'97 chip, give it a try. If you'll use it, I would appreciate a small donation of 5 euro to paypal@audio-evolution.com.

Kind regards and thanks to the guy who found out about it in the first place!

Davy Wentzler

Hey, this is way cool. Now, if I only could remember if I have the AC'97 chip in my XE ;)

Hi DaveAE,

This is BEYOND belief!!!

Are you SURE it's working? It won't slow the computer down by leaps and bounds, or cause other SW/OS glitches???

Now I KNOW AOS4.x WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!! (But, I always DID know that! !!!!)

!!!!

You da MAN!!!!! (And look at the modesty!!!! Asking/hoping for a mere 5 Euro for our ginormous boondoggle, evaporated!!! As soon as I can, there'll be something on the way!)

A very reserved "ONLY AMIGA makes it possible!!!!!!!!!!!!"

If its that brown socket then mines empty too .. Bugger ..those "Early XE's " must've been seriously early .. I must've been one of the first XE owners !!

btw .. Surely the onboard sound wouldn't be as good as my Sb Live! anyway ?

OK, so what's involved with makign up an unofficial PCB mod to add this Sigmatel chip back onto newer boards lacking it? Just the chip, or is there resistors/caps/etc. that need to go with it? I don't even remember if re rear ATX connectors are there for the audio.

I'm happy with my Maudio, but heck if someone wants to pay people to add this to their boards, I wouldn't mind being guy these people would be paying. ;)

@The Editor

I dont think its the brown socket but a square chip just over from it (the only square one in that area).
If you havent got it like me you will see an empty space.

They won't take kindly to this on MooBunny. Next thing people will be slating Eyetech for not including this chip on later batches. These people not being A1 owners of course.

It seems I have the chip, so I'll be trying it out once the driver gets through the OS4depot quarantine.

@the_editor

The chip is about 1 centimetre from the rear of the board and is in line with the AGP slot. The chip itself is surface mounted and about 1 cm².

Hi The_Editor,

Feels like the old das. A case of "Amiga did it right, then undoes it".

Well, they had NO WAY of knowing it WAS right! This is AWFUL!

True enough, I guess, but there's something to be said for "plug and play" you know, and every coder not getting fun little "surprises". That baseline level of support for all models is nice.

Also, ONE EXTRA SLOT. That's ALWAYS good.

To everyone considering giving up on Amiga and moving on........ IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!!!!

You've waited till now, so STAY!!!! Hehe!

I'll have to see if I have the chip - I doubt it, as this is one of the later AmigaOnes, with a flashable U-Boot.

I need to donate anyway, mostly for the SB Live! fix (which has been working flawlessly, thanks), but also because of the amount of time you've spent on audio drivers. You've definitely earnt it

Chris

I'm not sure if i have this chip or not. I couldn't see it, so i don't
think i have it, but i might try the driver that will be uploaded, just
in case. If i happened to not hear anything from the driver, then i
know i don't have the chip

I've done some tests. It's relatively good. I was playing a track from a CD (not through the CD-in socket, but through normal PCM) and couldn't hear a difference to my Audigy2 ZS. The frequency response is quite good. Note that Sb Live's and Audigy's have AC'97's too! However, the onboard sound is a little bit more noisy if you turn up the volume real loud. Anyway, that's on my 400 euro speakers, I don't have any usable headphones where I can test it on.

Don't know about its recording qualities though. Later on that in a couple of days.
