hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Last Chance to WIN an Amy’05 !!!
posted by Troika on 5-Nov-2005 17:33:12 (2518 reads)
The “Give Amy her Face”..Contest ends on Nov.12, 2005.

What are your chances? Great! We have some 30 entries so far and are not looking for you to be a graphics wiz to enter. The process of entry is very easy with our
Amy design kit

Rules are very open: We are looking for one standard design that will clearly identify the Amy series of computers. So use the design kits face plates and logos (or your own design). Get your favorite paint program out and put and put your creative ideas to work.

Amy needs a face plate for both a desktop (horizontal) and tower case (vertical). All entries must be submitted in jpeg format and will be judged by Troika. Enter as often as your wish. That’s it that easy! Send all entries to: newface4amy@troikang.com along with a working return email address with your entry.

If someone does I certainly hope it dances. Unlike the one on this system which seems to take to many time outs.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Why not join forces with the Reality Project ?
Amy'05 in the Fantasy case... that could be something !!!

And replace the Dancing Banana with a Bouncing Ball....

Apart from the fact that it would never fit it's a good idea.
The uA1 has onboard graphics and sound(?) which make it possible.
Only uA1 makes that possible.
There is no expansion capability on the fantasy, which suits me fine incidentally.

Ok. Going back to my happy place now.
We have no weiners!!! Make my hotdogs a reality!!!

I am a great fan of the A1000, owning two, and it would be great if you could match the Amiga Fantasy case for nostalgia.

Description of case derivations and suggestions:
The case is curved on the edges matching the A1000's soft corners.
It is also curved at the front of the case for a softer look, but the front could be flat like the original A1000.

I feel that the less generic the case looks the more it looks like an Amiga, that is why I have CD/DVD slots that look like the original A1000's diskdrive or alternatively a single slit. If there is a requirement for an exposed CD/DVD drive, then perhaps you can get a custom front plate created, or failing that, opt for one of those smaller CD/DVD drives used on laptops, which seems less like a commodity PC component. An Amiga should look like a custom built box as it was in the beginning.

The blue represents glowing blue Neon. I believe such effects are commonplace in the modding community. You could buy the Neon strip or have a blue light exposed through slats reflecting the light down in the recess. I just thought it would be a great differentiator from all the other cases and cool to watch in the dark. Sorta like Tron.

The red parts are LEDs, which like the A1000, are used for power and Drive activity. It would be great if the Blue Neon meant it was on, the left red LED meant HD activitiy and the right LED meant CD/DVD activity.

Alternatively, the Blue Neon is not a deal breaker, and could be replaced either by inset plastic like the A1000 currently has, or by a silver strip that matches the edging.

The edging on the cases are reflective silver or stainless steel but that isn't a deal breaker either and could be removed. I just put them in to make the case seem more modern than an A1000.

The red LEDS placed on the edges depict a groove that runs all around the case, perhaps with a continuation of blue neon strips. That isn't a dealbreaker either, and was an attempt to modernise the A1000 design but with the same design cues.

The Grey case color is simply grey plastic, although it would be cool if the entire case was metalic as my Amiga XE picture tries to depict. I guess instead of grey, it could be black.

The Amy05 logo is inset into the plastic, althought a silver logo that sticks out would also be welcome. Excuse the Amiga logo on the A1000 like cases, I did it before you specified logos were required and it just looked too good to erase. I think it is fair to say that we really all do prefer to have the Amiga logo on the case. I really would prefer a little subtlety in the logos overall. I didn't put a big Amy05 logo on the A1000 derivation as I wanted it to match the original more closely. The smaller mini horizontal case on the far right demonstrates the effect of large Amy05 logo placement adequately.

If you're going for the A1000 lookalike case putting the USB ports in the same place as the joystick ports, (ie the right side of the case) would make it more authentic in feel. A keyboard USB connector should be either exposed on the underbelly of the case(like the A1000) or on the back.

Of course the keyboard garage is what makes the A1000 so distinctive, but it may not be feasible for you to do. I suggest if you do go for that design that you find a decent matching keyboard to sell it with. Silver keyboards with black keys are a commonplace, and there are some with silver and blue neon keys that would match the blue neon effect. And if you could make that original flat edged Amiga mouse for USB again I'd wet myself.

If you must go for some USB ports on the front of the case, perhaps there is a mechanism to have a flip down/up section of plastic, perhaps you could even have a user expose it in the equivalent place as the A1000's ram expansion panel on the middle front.

The power switch should be on the left side of the case like the A1000. Failing that the boing button should be the ON switch. If you can't do that then buttons could be on the central panel at the bottom. Any buttons should be silver, although I have seen some glass like buttons on DVD players that look quite good.

Good luck with Amy.
Cheers,
