Software News   Software News : AHI v6.0 released
   posted by Anonymous on 22-Nov-2005 17:31:14 (5902 reads)
Martin Blom has released v6.0 of his audio driver software AHI.

There are version for AmigaOS4, AmigaOS3, MorphOS and AROS available.

News & recent changes [Read on]

Here are all the major changes since the last stable release, v4:

o Anti-click mixing routines, which makes AHI search for a zero-crossing before playing a new note
o Playback of 32 bit samples.
o Multi-channel audio. Eight channels are supported.
o Support for four more architectures: MorphOS/PPC, AmigaOS4/PPC, Amithlon/ix86, AROS/ix86.
o Support for PowerPC accelerator cards (MorphOS and AmigaOS4 only).
o A new driver, device.audio, can be used to make all low-level AHI applications, which normally open AHI in exclusive mode, behave as if they used the high-level API which allows several AHI applications to work simultaneously.
o The 68000 processor is no longer supported; a 68020 or better is required.

Thanks, that was it, duh! I use AmigaForever on my pen drive at work and one the main things is for playing audio using AmiNet Radio. Amiga OS really impresses people too. So I had to get the audio working again to continue to show it off. :)

Made me think about how important AHI is. With out 16 bit sound I don't think to many people would be impressed Going to see if can set paypal up to do an automatic mothly payment for this. I don't have much money, but since I use this program every day...

Thanks again for the help, there really is nothing like the Amiga Community when we're and not

Just one question. Should we now use the 7.1 Multichannel mode, or
do we still have to use the Stereo++ mode?

@Helgis

All the sounds you are playing currently are either mono or stereo, so it's no use to select the 7.1 mode, so better stick with the stereo++ mode until some movie player or game supports the 7.1 mode.

@DaveAE

Thought that, too, so i'm using the HIFI Stereo++ modes

Sound quality sounds much clearer, sharper and cleaner,
especially now that 32-bit samples can be playbacked,
among several things Thanks for the advice

@Helgis

The multi-channel mode was already in since July last year, and it mixes in 32-bit since HiFi modes exist (years ago too). Since whatever you are playing are very likely not 32-bit samples, it is not playing any clearer, sharper or cleaner than before.

@DaveAE

I'm sure you're right, of course. More PPC-native at least

Not more PPC-native either, it is as PPC native as it was.

@DaveAE

Of course, psychologically it might sound clearer, sharper and better simply because it's newer

@DaveAE

Hi Davy!

What about DvPlayer? It should playback Dolby Digital and DTS
multichannel sound. Does this work for those that have the
speaker setup?

Well, the fact that an application can decode an AC3 stream (and possibly stream it out through SPDIF) doesn't mean that it supports AHI's multichannel audio yet.

The archive seems to be missing some of the drawers/files mentioned in the installation instructions. For example;

user/dev/DOSDrivers
user/dev/MIDI
user/L

all seem to be missing. I copied what was there and it seems to be working fine anyway (knock on wood).

@Samwel

AFAIK, it was taken out since there were problems. There is also no direct AC-3/DTS passthrough option in AHI. The multi-channel mode is for 8 channels of PCM.

From the readme file:

Missing files

At present, not all binaries can be build for all architectures:

* DEVS:MIDI/emu10kx, the CAMD driver for EMU10kx-based sound cards
is currently only available in the m68k-amigaos build.

* L:AHI-Handler is a "resident" or "pure" binary that implements
an AmigaOS-style filesystem. As such, it is currently not included
in the ppc-amigaos, i686be-amithlon and i386-aros builds.

For architectures that also provides m68k emulation, simply grab these
missing files from the m68k-amigaos archive instead.

The only file I see changed from the previous PPC archive (beta) is the c: command "addaudiomodes".

Best Wishes,
#6

The MIDI/emu10kx is PPC native on OS4depot. I'll check with Martin if I sent him my changes.
