hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Amigaone linux 2.6.8-16 Released
posted by PegXlin on 12-Dec-2005 13:39:38 (4574 reads)
After many days of testing from amigaone owners.

Debian kernel 2.6.8-16 has been released!

Download the patch from here, or use the pre-compiled kernel + modules = 2.6.8a1r9.tar.bz2

PLEASE NOTE: This will not function correctly if you are using a GX cpu (inc. SE,ua1)
Other cpu's are not effected.

Enjoy!

Pegxlin DEV

Thanks goes to geri for the initial DMA patch

Are you absolutely sure this affects the FX chips in the SEs? I thought this issue only affected the GX.

The SE uses the PPC750 CXe.

@Bombcrater

Ah, yes. CXe. Still, that also doesn't have the GX problem, so MK2 and SE owners *should* be safe with this kernel - which was sort of my point - but of course it should be tested thoroughly first

Wait...my microA1 actually has an FX...that means IT SHOULD WORK?!!?

Then again, I will want to do MacOnLinux, which from what I gather doesn't actually work on 2.6 kernels..

Although most things seem to work it seems not all AmigaOne diffs were used for this kernel, even the system bell doesn't work with it

But what's worse is that it includes the "asfs" MorphOS SFS for linux module (2.6.8dma/kernel/fs/asfs/asfs.ko), do not use it on AmigaOS SFS partitions (at least not in r/w mode, reading may work partially) unless you want to destroy them!

hu? I didn't notice that the system bell is not working! Can you point me to the source code, where it is changed to work on the AmigaOne?

Are they incompatible?

I didn't check the sources, I just noticed it doesn't work with this 2.6.8-16 kernel. I was sure it worked in the other 2.6.x kernels, but I just retried with all 3 kernels I have currently installed and it doesn't work in 2.6.12.6 either (anymore?), only with 2.4.26 (amigaone-linux.sf.net) it's still working
As I'm quite sure it worked with 2.6.12.6 previously it's probably not the kernel itself but something else I installed or updated recently which only works with 2.6.x kernels and breaks the system bell.

Yes. The AROS SFS will very likely be made compatible to the AmigaOS SFS, but the MorphOS SFS, incl. the linux "asfs" version of it, is something different.

I'm a little bit confused now. Does it work with the 2.6.12.2 kernel or not? Or do you mean Ken Moffat's 2.6.9 kernel? Well, if it works with this kernel, than it should work also with the other kernels, because they base upon the patch file I extracted from this kernel source. Anyway I will take a look at the 2.4.25 AmigaOne Linux sourcecode.

That's a pity...SFS support in Linux would have been great.

No idea, I don't have a 2.6.12.2 kernel here
With both 2.6.x kernels I have currently installed (the 2.6.8-16 from this thread and 2.6.12.6) it doesn't work, it only works with 2.4.26.

No. I'm not sure where I got it from, probably from a link posted in an amigaworld thread. It's version 2.6.12.6, using /lib/modules/2.6.12.6-a1-2, 1847559 bytes, md5sum 489033d4a9d97dc691cf6769d741bbb9 and the date of the files is 2005-11-22.

You see what happens ...I compiled too many kernel versions

Aha, okay then I will look at the code and extract the patches myself. Maybe Ken Moffat forgot something when he created the initial diff files out of the AmigaOne Linux kernel source.

2.6.12.6-a1-2 is my kernel release with the simple DMA patch. PegXlin added the patches made by Ken Moffat, which limit the transfer size during a DMA operation.

Thanks for the info!

Is it just me, or does this kernel cause X to run really sluggishly?

Hi chris,

Thats the side effect of reducing sector transfer and non-cache coherency.

The linux kernel would need to be redesigned for the amigaone, which is not going to happen.....

That's odd, the link to the page was working a few days ago. What happened to it now?
