Software News   Software News : BarsnPipes OS4 ver. 0.6
posted by alfa on 23-Jan-2006 16:23:07 (5475 reads)
Hello all,
BarsnPipes OS4 ver. 0.6 is out.

After Lyle Hazelwood has fulfilled his promise to work away on the CAMD-USB-MIDI drivers, it was the time, also to release a new version of BnP.

First of all I want to give may big thank to Lyle. I really know, how much efforts are neccessary, to make hardware-drivers - especially for USB. And he had done a really good job.

We worked together on MIDI. To enable the full use of the possibilities of Lyles new CAMD-USB-MIDI drivers I've made a flood of new MIDI-Tools.
Now you can use theoretical up to 8 USB-MIDI-Interfaces together at the same time, each interfaces with up to 16 ports (16 independet MIDI-lines - remember the TriplePlay has 3 independent MIDI-lines). This would result in the possibility to use 2048(!!) (16x16x8) independent MIDI-channels. Is this enough ? ...

Of course, there is much more, which I could do in the time since the ver. 0.5.

Not at last:
Michael Rees (http://soundsgrate.net) has given away for free the complete source-code of all it's programming-work for BarsnPipes, which he has made from 1989-1997.
This a incredible worthfull gift to the BarsnPipes community.
At this place I'll give him my very special thank.
I want to encourage you, if you find his work useful to write him a mail:
michaelrees@soundsgrate.net
Big parts of it's material (2 linklibraries for Tool/Accessory programmers, and 11 Tools) I could already port to OS4. More follows.

Go to my homepage please.
www.alfred-j-faust.de

There you also can read whats new and download the archive.
Attention: It's size is much increased and is now 8,5 MB!

Hopeful you enjoy the new version.

Kindly greatings
Alfred

Work like this is much appreciated even if I can't appreciate it directly
(ie: I don't have much in the way of MIDI equipment anymore).

Many Thanks for your great efforts!

Cheers,
Bean.

I'm still a 56k-modem user, so I would like to have splitted files for
downloading. For example all the camd drivers don't need to be in the main
archive, as I have them already.

Hello again,
I see, 8,2 MB is a very big file for a 56k-modem. So I've made a update archive, which only contains the most recent files and no installer.

Download it here:
BnPOS4_06_update.lha

I'll make tomorrow some small archive for different stuff, so it maybe possible for the users to choose, what he want to download.

Kindly regards
Alfred

Thank you Alfred.

This is outstanding. I have played 48 MIDI channels on my A1 with my UM-880 interface, so far. I have some songs that need the MIDI in and out tools changed, have to get to work.

Wow!
Fun times for me..
I've been working too hard, now it's time to play.
I can't think of a better way to do it.

Thanks again Alfred, you are appreciated.

I've never really used MIDI but thought I'd install this program just to take a look. I have a few comments about the installation and program.

The Installer doesn't seem to do any version checking before installing some of the drivers etc. That's a big no-no for an Amiga install script. Maybe someone else could take a look at the Install to see what it's doing. Manual install instructions would be nice for paranoid people who don't trust installers (Many Aminet programs have installers that will overwrite newer libs etc. with outdated ones).

The program stops with no indication of what has failed if it can't load a driver in DEVS:MIDI. Only the Sashimi serial debug output informed me of the problem. I think the program should just load the drivers it needs and recognizes since other programs might put special drivers in the same directory.

Why in the world is the gui directory stored as an lha archive and extracted to RAM: when the program opens?? The program has many megabytes of support files so what is gained by compressing 359958 bytes of gui data and decrunching it to ram: every time the program is run? Just put the gui directory in the BarsnPipes directory. I think OS4 can load it quickly enough from disk.

If I run the program and quit, I can't run the program a second time.
If this is simply because I haven't read the docs ignore this one.

I thought I might be able to load one of the songs and play it using AHI sound. Maybe I need to change some setting before I get sound. Can someone give me a quick howto just to get one of the songs to play. Hearing some sound would certainly encourage me to read the docs and explore the program a little further. I using a µA1.

@Xenic

I think that the main reason that it does some of those things is because it is a Beta version of the program.

There has never been audio associated with Bars and Pipes. Bars and Pipes is a MIDI sequencer. It can record, edit and playback MIDI sequences. It requires a MIDI instrument (synthesizer, sound module, drum machine) to make the sound. As far as I know, at this time there is no OS4 native software synthesizer that can be played by MIDI.

Hi Xenic, ... I don't know your name

I'm very sorry, that you have had such a trouble with BarsnPipes. But you show me, whats going on, if a curious men, who never ever had worked with BarsnPipes before, want to try out BarsnPipes.

The installer don't check the version of the drivers ... thats correct, but this is not a fault, because the archive contains the latest (most recent - the best) available drivers.

It's right ... no manual installation instructions are available ... I'll change this ...

The question about the gui:
BarsnPipes (like you have seen) has many many gadgets. The most of them are rendered with small pics. All these pics are loaded from outside from the GUI-directory, which is (since ver.0.6) a lha-crunched archive. The GUI-dir contains 475(!) small pictures files. The harddisk is working any seconds to load all the files. So I decided (to shorten this loading time dramatically) to make this deal with the lha-archive.

You only can run the program once, if
- the programs runs already
- the shutdown of the program fails by any reason

Like another friend already mentioned:
BarsnPipes is a MIDI-sequencer.
Unfortunately: If you don't own a MIDI-device (Keyboard, Synthesizer, Expander or similar) BarsnPipes isn't useable for you - at the moment. This maybe changed in the future, when someone writes a software-synthesizer for OS4.

And also: BarsnPipes OS4 is really in a beta-state. Never ever beta-versions are complete and bugfree ... is there any program available, which is complete and bugfree ????

Sorry, if you haven't any MIDI-equipment, and if you not so familiary in making music, I guess, it will be not the best choice, to try to work with BarsnPipes.

Nevertheless ... beat me - but this is my conviction ... BarsnPipes IS the best Multimedia-MIDI-sequencer, which was ever made for AMIGA-style computers.
(Is there anywhere a better MIDI-sequencer ???)
Only by this reason I give my heart-blood into this project. I don't believe, that I would do this, if there would be a better possibility, like BarsnPipes.

If you only want to make fast some noices or grooves, BarsnPipes seems not to be the best tool for you. But this maybe changed ...

Kindly
Alfred

It doesn't work for me.
When I got Lyles most resent camd-driver, i could use the prokeys as a midikeyboard and play from Prokeys88 USB-in to the UNO USB-out.
But since the upgrade, that doesn't work.
And not multiple outs either.

BTW why is it that you can see both midi ins and midi outs in the midi-out tool (yes I know, it is a beta ;).
