Software News   Software News : New versions of Scout, AmiDisk and Subversion for OS4 Available!
   posted by wegster on 15-Mar-2006 7:21:53 (3395 reads)
In light of recent debates over 'what is news,' I'm posting this as a combined News Item, as all 3 are fairly significant pieces of OS4 software, and I believe this is the first we've seen of subversion. Of course, in the event any software author wishes to do a news release on their own software, please do so!

Scout is a tool that allows you to monitor your computer system. It displays many different things -- like tasks, ports, assigns, expansion boards, resident commands, interrupts, etc. -- and you can perform some certain actions on them.

Scout was submitted to OS4Depot by Thore Böckelmann, ported by the Scout Open Source Team, and you can grab it here:
http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=utility/misc/scout.lha
Scout is also available for MOS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AmiDisk v1.04/OS4 was just released on OS4Depot, authored by FLORAC Roland.

Change Summary:

Handles mouse wheel.
Better vertical proportionnal gadgets handler.
Bug on the Comments handler corrected (didn't work for ALL files)
New prefs button to desactivate bubble help.
String gadget path bug corrected (didn't work when the tab wasn't active).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subversion is a 'next generation CVS' of sorts, and becoming quite popular for source control. The port was done by Olaf Barthel, the original by the Subversion team. Grab it here: OS4Depot info link

An Online Subversion book is also available as HTML or PDF.

@wegster

Could you link to the information page instead of directly linking the file ? (for next time of course)

I haven't tried the other tools yet but SubVersion. I run a Subversion service on my Linux box and use the client on the Amiga side. Works well here. Thank you Olaf.

Scout is a very useful system diagnostic tool, and belongs up there with SnoopDos IMO!

Scout comes with the 68k version of identify.library v37.1. The ppc version of this lib, v37.2, can be found on OS4 Depot.

Thanks for this little did-bit. Where does this library hide? I do not find it in Libs: Do I have to worry about the older version overwriting the newer one. This is if I have the new one already.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

@Moxee

identify.library

Its not an os4 library so either one can be installed & should work. I've had the ppc version installed since it came out.

Thanks for that. I saw in the notes it claimed it included identify.library, has assumed both, although I didn't update that yet, as I've still got the ppc native previous identify.library on my setup...

FWIW, it looks like svnserver is also included with the subversion port. While I wouldn't trust AOS to be a source repository (many reasons, speed, security compared to *nix boxen), it seems like Olaf didn't test that part much, so if anyone gives the svn server a spin, he might appreciate some feedback as to if it works ok...
