Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Apple makes Macs run Windows XP
posted by DaveyD on 5-Apr-2006 20:51:37 (5825 reads)
Apple has released software that lets users run Microsoft's operating system on its computers that use Intel chips. Called Boot Camp the program lets Mac owners run both Apple's OSX and Microsoft's Windows XP.

A trial version of the software is now available so users can install it. Future versions of Apple's OSX software will include the program.

The release follows efforts by hackers to get Windows XP booting up on Macs that use Intel chips.

Good for Mac OS, now it can show it's powers head on to XP.
Potential Mac OS buyers can now safely buy the hardware and
"escape" back to XP if they don't like it.

Good for Apple!

Normally they charge $100 for the next upgrade it's nice to see them providing it for free!

In related news Apple has released it's answer to keep current with the latest videogames -- It's called BootCamp.

Now apple is just another PC company making unnecessarily expensive PCs! They might as well give up making computers and just sell x86 OS X, because it's only a matter of time before some one hacks x86 OS X to be run on cheap PCs.

It's actually good! After Apple dies, AmigaOS is the only OS for PowerPC processors.

Link?

IMHO Apples x86-boxes don't have the "BIOS" and XP can't start without it. (All Windows need the "BIOS")

Not anymore. Both Apple and a couple of guys who one $13kUS have found ways to emulate the BIOS so XP will boot. A lot like softkicking 3.1 on an Amiga.

The Apple forums are running hot with this one! Most are happy, some are ticked off thinking Apple are sellouts. IMHO, I think it is a stroke of genuis from Apple.

If anything, it lets people use Adobe Photoshop at native speeds while they wait for Adobe to release CS3

@firbodi

Just another PC company making the best hardware in the world at the same price as inferior kit!

And now all the spineless people who chickened out of buying a Mac because "I only know Windows" can run Windows on it. Sales will explode.

That last sentence is an amazing piece of creative thinking!

@che

Here you go:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

It is stunningly unexpected news. If they'd been a bit quicker, they could've claimed the XP on Mac bounty!

An interesting addition to my brand new Mac Mini (Intel) that just arrived the other day. Downgrading to Windoze is kinda an interesting trick but Mac OS X is a far superior product IMHO. Seems the investors like the idea from the stock market reaction. To each their own.

The Mini sits atop my MicroA1-C at the moment. And I thought the MicroA1-C was a small computer...

????????

They give to you the possibility to dualboot with native and tested drivers, XP so if you need a game or an aplication like Autocad, you can use it on your Mac.

I don't understand commentslike yours. Apple give you the choice, in a professional and complete way. Thanks to this i can destroy my last pc and buy a second mac.

Another step towards the dead of MAC.Maybe apple will not dead but it will ended up selling mp3 players and ordinary PCs and then what differentiates it from commodore, escom, gateway, dell or another pc vendor? (note that i put deliberately commodore and escom because they also had another product better than PC but insisted on making PCs and they died miserably)

Whoah! The ability to run Mac OS X, but dual-boot into Windows to play the latest games is pretty awesome. If I hadn't already bought a new PC, I would seriously consider this option :)

Apple are going to make a sh*t load of sales, when this becomes official, and shops start bundling Windows with Macs! Some people may not even use OS X, and just buy the Mac for it's looks, but it will still provide a massive boost to their market.

Hmmm, Hyperion, are you listening? Damn, thought not

Thats is exactly the problem, people will start to buy macs only because are eye candy cases but will be emerge a lot of inexpensive pc that imitates the look of Macintels and when more a more people only buys MACs for run winxp and boot only Macosx for play with it then software houses will be less and less interested in do ports for MacOSX because if you have 2 different computers is more probably that you buy 2 copies of the same software that if you have one computer with dual boot in wich case is more than probable that you buy a windows version unless you are a die hard Mac fan in wich case you buy the mac version but how you can dual boot in winxp, if the software are avaliable for windows you will buy the windows version because you have no option; conclusion: will be the macosx version does more sales of your software? No, because you will buy the windows version anyway. the extra effort to make the port is not compensated.

I hope that my view point have been understood because I have written a text a little rolled

I think this is why Apple are making it very clear that they are not selling or supporting XP, so people won't get any support if things go wrong on the Windows side - its at the users own risk. I think it is sensible them giving people this option and I'm sure in the short term they will sell more computers.

If you were buying a new Mac now because of the XP compatatibility, you will have to use OSX initially anyway and download the Boot Camp software before you can get to installling OSX. I don't think these users will go back to XP full time after having this first impression of OSX.

I actually think it shows Apple have great confidence in OSX.

I like how Apple poke fun at Windows with the little sniddy comments.

Just one example

Quote:
Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries."

It's actually happened already, I've been playing with OS X on my PC for some time now. The HW support is getting better and better and it works on AMD CPUs as well...

Here's some more information about it. (OSx86 Project)
There's a list of supported HW on Wiki-section.

I find some of the comments here sadly amusing. Apple is going to grow like crazy now.
They will be able to sell many more machines to smaller enterprises now - especially those with mixed environments, who can now have a single vendor to handle all hardware related issues and so on.

They will also be able to give those switchers who still have some legacy pc lying around a reason to throw it away, because they can just use their application/hardware (as long as it's not older than USB anyway) on their Macs with dual booting. Obviously there will also be new buyers lined up. Even those who are doubting. Most won't be booting into Windows for long either.

Some of the things that will now be available to Mac owners include the latest games (usually they're 6 to 12 months delayed unless we're talking Blizzard or similar), applications like Nero (Toast is ok, but overpriced and underpowered), the online services that use the crippled Microsoft formats, which require you to have their player and IE installed *shudder* - and cheapo hardware for recording TV or whatever, that doesn't have mac drivers out of the box. If you're lucky it'll eventually be supported on the Mac too.

This is great because it's kind of like using Virtual PC, but obviously much faster. It's something you boot into, because you need a specific issue handled and for all the regular stuff you do it the elegant way (in OS X).

This is a truely inspired idea.

Apple make there cash from hardware sales. Mac OS rocks, but doesnt have all the applications I use. I couldn't justify having another computer - but now I am able to. I can get rid of my slow XP1700+ and get a fast mac, and run windows on it for the odd animation tool I use.

This will give apple's market share a kick in the ####. Only thing thats been keeping ppl with PC's is windows.. this will introduce Mac OS to a wider audience.

Indeed, only that the software available for Windows is far bigger. I don't think that Apple has done a favour to the Apple software developers, because they now have a convenient "excuse" to produce Windows versions.

Great! Now that Windows infects Mac then software companies no longer need to support both Mac and Win platforms. Now all they need to support is Windows.

I think Mac is going to eventually loose this race. I don't want to see it, but I think it will be true.

Now if Mac could run Windows apps directly from OSx or Apple went into the software only business and made their OS run on every PC then that would be a different story. But as it is I don't think it is going to be a good move for Apple in the long run.

Only time will tell. I don't think that even the so called "Experts" can be sure of what will happen.
