hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmigaOne: Centralized order for Onboard-Soundchip
   posted by spotUP on 10-Apr-2006 21:09:19 (5801 reads)
AmigaOne: Centralized order for Onboard-Soundchip
The AC97 soundchip (Sigmatel STAC9752T) installed on the first few batches of AmigaOne motherboards has been removed in later production runs as it seemed that it wouldn't work anyway due to a hardware bug.

But Davy Wentzler and Stephen Brookes proved later on that the problem could be solved in software and released a working audio driver.

Until now, people that wanted to fit the missing chip onto their AmigaOne motherboard were facing the problem that said chip didn't seem to be available anymore. Costel 'Cyborg' Mincea now found a dealer that still has the Sigmatel STAC9752T in stock.

The final price for one single Sigmatel STAC9752T chip depends on the volume of the order, this is why Mincea now asks all interested users to contact him until 17.April via e-mail and tell him the quantity they would be interested in. Mincea stresses the fact that this email is not a real order, he only needs to gauge the actual demand to to get a quotation from the dealer.

Could some kind moderator please replace this text with the current version from amiga-news.de? I hope the new one makes more sense

And please don't cut and paste whole news items, post the first one or two paragraphs and then link to the original (I know I'm sounding like an ass now, sorry )

Edit: Sorry, forgot the link to the news item:

I know you're just trying to avoid a public spanking - but thanks anyway

Ah sorry, please don't do that - you misunderstood what I was trying to say. Our TOS state that people should only quote one or two paragraphs and then link to our news item, because several webmasters used to simply cut'n paste all of our news items in the past and thereby used our work to increase their traffic.

That hint was not directed at you or aw.net (we of course appreciate what you did), I just thought I'd mention it in case one of said webmasters peeks into this thread

Could one of the moderators please insert the email address for the "I'm interested"
mails? sigmatel@stackswap.net

[edit: nothing beside the email is missing in the news item.. being able to read is an
advantage for sure ]

Oh and btw: I do not gurantee that the onboard sound will work after someone fitted
the SigmaTel chip (correctly)! I'll just try hard to get some of these damn chips, after that
you're on your own

Just as information for those who are interested:
the target price for an order of about 200 chips is below $ 5 per chip (excl. shipping).

Only if you really buy 200 units.. Up to now the number of units i was asked for is not even
near of that 200 units!

Don't get me wrong, but please stop spreading any target prices if you just make a wild
guess about the order quantity without any facts.. this might just lead to heavy
disappointment if that 5$ are exceeded..

Oh and don't forget to add shipping from the supplier to me and shipping from me to the
user.. i won't pay that out of my own pocket as i give the chips away at cost price anyway.

@Cyborg:
No offense meant - this was just for those (like me) who have absolutely no idea about the target price.
I have got a quote for that quantity, so I felt free to post this.

Perhaps you can join with some amiga-dealers ?
Those (like GuruMeditaion) could get some chips in stock and add them by request together with a DMA-fix ?

@ _PAB_

Everybody is free to join the order. In case of GuruMed, we already talked about that..

@Cyborg

I'm not planing to buy a chip yet as:
1.> My SBLive (I think it's what it is) works correctly.
2.> I want to make sure it can be easily installed without any risk for the mobo.

Once a few people have installed their chip without any trouble, I might consider it.

I wouldn't think I'm the only one in that scenario... So if you (or another retailer) could keep some in stock (for BB4 for example )...

// Just my 2 cents...

Jerry

@Jerryuk007

So you don't want to take any risks, but you honestly expect Cyborg or a retailer to take the risk for you? Nice community spirit, there. No wonder the Amiga market is in decline.

@Jerryuk007

Yeah, the problem is that finding such chip is QUITE difficult, so perhaps when you decide to do that, you'll find that you cannot get the chip.

In my case, I have all three PCIs fully populated (SCSI, SII0680 IDE and sound card), so having the chip onboard would leave one slot free, at least...

Even if I'd wait for others to try first, I want to have the chip, if it not too expensive, just in case.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

Has anyone tried the ADI 1986 A audio chip ?

The SoundMax products are great.

Is the AC97 the only chip missing? Or are there other supporting components (e.g. surface-mount resistors/capacitors) that also need to be soldered on for it to work?

Hans

@asymetrix

Well we need the same pin out as the ”Sigmatel STAC9752T”,

I’m not saying it’s impossible to hack some thing in whit different pin out but not every one can do that, not every one can surface mount chip by them self, then there is general software support I guess, I have not looked in to it, so excuse me if I’m wrong about software support side of it.
