hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmigaOne: Centralized order for Onboard-Soundchip

AmigaOne: Centralized order for Onboard-Soundchip
The AC97 soundchip (Sigmatel STAC9752T) installed on the first few batches of AmigaOne motherboards has been removed in later production runs as it seemed that it wouldn't work anyway due to a hardware bug.

But Davy Wentzler and Stephen Brookes proved later on that the problem could be solved in software and released a working audio driver.

Until now, people that wanted to fit the missing chip onto their AmigaOne motherboard were facing the problem that said chip didn't seem to be available anymore. Costel 'Cyborg' Mincea now found a dealer that still has the Sigmatel STAC9752T in stock.

The final price for one single Sigmatel STAC9752T chip depends on the volume of the order, this is why Mincea now asks all interested users to contact him until 17.April via e-mail and tell him the quantity they would be interested in. Mincea stresses the fact that this email is not a real order, he only needs to gauge the actual demand to to get a quotation from the dealer.

More details at: http://www.amiga-news.de

My AmigaOne XE already has the chip installed.

It it didn't I would be on your list for one.

@Atheist

People are gonna beat up the few precious AmigaOnes mobo left out in the wild just to feel like the original AmigaOne G4s?

Who's gonna provide the soldering and the guaranty that it's gonna work and be ok?

10$ PCI sound cards. Safe and will be less expensive.

@NutsAboutAmiga

The AC'97 software part is the same for every AC'97 out there, except for certain extra capabilities (bass/treble control, fake surround for 2D, etc.) that don't matter for it to work or not.

So you don't want to take any risks, but you honestly expect Cyborg or a retailer to take the risk for you?

It's not that... It's more the fact that if my mobo get "burnt", then I won't be able to replace it yet. If new HW was available I would be more "ready to jump in"... But it has also been a while since I used an Iron... So I would feel more happy if someone could fit it in for me... I might buy one or two chips depends on the price, to have them ready for BB4... But I haven't decided yet... Too busy with other matters...

We will take in a large quantity of these chips, and also look into the possibility of having them fitted.

If there's sufficient interest, there will be a "combo thing" to have usb/ethernet-dma/sound fixed in one go. However, since no one can guarantee that each step of the procedure will be 100% faultless, there is a certain element of risk involved - with shipping, accidents may happen, even with professionals doing the soldering.

Anyone considering this must keep this in mind. Since there are no replacement boards at this time, we have a hard time offering one. The best we can do is offer some sort of money-back, or some sort of gift certificate (ie, credit at the store which you can keep for as long as you like - maybe until replacement boards are found).

@DaveAE
But the hardware isn't 100% identical for other AC'97 codecs. The AC'97 interface part is the same, but the decoupling, filtering and power supply pins are different.

So software good, hardware bad

@Toaks
Come to Gothenburg saturday, I'll teach you how to solder the bugger. You just need a marketing director who can generate some hot air, and some solder paste. Oh, and opposable thumbs and common sense helps, of course.

@Jerryuk007

Buy now, cause there ain't gonna be another chance. An AC'97 codec is not even close to difficult to solder, if people would just use the right equipment

@DaveAE

Which would you personally recommend:
a) A1 owners to buy this chip and try to place it on their board themselves or send it away spending lots of $$$ to have someone else put it on for them
b) buying a $10 soundcard instead?

@DarthX

If you don't need more free PCI slots, then stick to a sound card.
If you really really really need more PCI slots and want to take the risk, perhaps you could do it, without any guarantee that it works. Don't come knocking on my door if it doesn't work in any case!

The same people who provide the soldering and sometimes guarantee for DMA and USB mods?

Probably. But how many Amiga users are really content to leave things as the factory did? Hacking things up is part of what attracted me to Amiga in the first place, as I like to fiddle around in there.

Amen to that! I've got 3 Amigas and 1 Gates Crate in this room. Only my AmigaOne XE has it's case on and that is only because it is one of those easy open towers.

@Cyborg

Have you talked to any of the dealers in the USA about going in with you? I would be interested if that happened.
