Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Mobilezone and Amiga Introduce Amiga Content Across Brazilian Digital Devices
   posted by AF on 2-May-2006 14:24:03 (6042 reads)
May 1, 2006 - San Francisco, CA/Sao Paolo, Brazil.– Mobilezone and Amiga bring AmigaAnywhere™ applications to Mobilezone's customers worldwide. Now, visitors to Mobilezone can purchase their favorite Amiga content for their Microsoft Windows PCs, Smartphones, and PDAs. Amiga's innovative technology allows mobile users to take advantage of emerging technologies such as media storage cards and U3 mobile storage devices.

This announcement brings another strong channel for application developers that are looking for a refined and efficient solution to developing content one-time and running it across a myriad of devices.

MobileZone gives current information about mobile technologies and provides a local web reference for PDAs, smartphones, Pocket PCs and wireless technologies like Wi-Fi. It has quickly grown into Brazil's leading and most complete Wi-Fi hotspot locator, earning well over 400,000 unique visitors to Mobilezone webpages since it was created, 3 years ago. The "Plugged" section of the site gives up to date news about what's happening with the wireless market inside and outside the country. It also carries monthly articles about interesting related subjects, such as mobile content and WiMax "hype" analysis.

Brazil is part of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) group of countries with the fastest expanding wireless markets, is the second largest mobile market in South America and 6th largest in the world. The country's mobile penetration rate is 41.1%, reaching 79.9 million customers through September 2005. Further, Brazil dominates the Latin American Internet market with broadband growth of 31% in 2005. "The growth in complex mobile and web usage in Brazil is very attractive to Amiga", said Gregory Sigel, Amiga's vice president of sales and marketing. "MobileZone provides a great entrée to this market, given their popularity with wireless and wired subscribers."

Amiga's cross-platform technologies fit well with Brazil, given the growing popularity of convergence strategies. In October 2004, TV Cidade and TVA were the first Brazilian operators to adopt the triple play strategy, combining VoIP, broadband and pay TV services. It also meshes well with MobileZone's combined mobile and WiFi target areas. "Brazilians continue to be big fans of the Amiga name", said Ricardo Menezes, President of Mobilezone. "We are very excited to provide our customers with rich graphical Amiga content and let them run it across their mobile, desktops and ultimately TV-based devices."

Mobilezone is highlighting Amiga with an About Amiga section ("Sobre Amiga") and an updated News/Interview ("Entrevista") section. The Amiga Games ("Jogos") section on the website lets Mobilezone's customers from over 20 countries purchase Amiga content for their devices of choice. As Amiga grows its applications and content portfolio, the two companies will work together to update the Mobilezone-Amiga site with the most market-relevant content.

About MobileZone:

MobileZone is a Brazilian portal that focuses on wireless and mobile technologies, news and related content. With its operations started in early 2004, MobileZone has, since then, received more than 360.000 unique visitors searching for Wi-Fi hotspots, news and exclusive content covering a variety of subjects including WiMax, UMTS, UWB and EVDO.

The majority of Mobilezone’s visitors, can be classified as IT professionals, wireless providers, doctors, business executives, government organizations and university students.

What bothers me ALOT is this part: Quote:
In the same way personal computation evolved in the last 10 years, the operating system of Amiga computers (AmigaOS) has also evolved and cot more mature. Today, AmigaOS is available for game development and applications for interactive TV, PocketPC, Smartphones, windows, linux, among other devices.

Notice how they refer to AA as AmigaOS... This is not the first press release were they do that, so i guess it kinda makes sense that they want to bury the classic AmigaOS "OS4"...

I'm not sure how you could get that message from my post seeing as I share most of the same views of the vast majority of people posting in these forums, which is in a nutshell that Amiga Inc. isn't doing much that is either innovative or exciting these days, putting road blocks in front of many possible initiaves that might actually get them more media attention, all the while exploiting what positive legacy the Amiga brand name might have left behind and alienating what developper and user base it might actually have left to make this possible.

Simply put, I questionned your statement that they are successful, whether economically or in innovation-wise, and whether this annoucement was a measure of any such success.

All anyone has to do is browse Amiga Inc.'s web site to see what sad state of affairs this company must be in to have such a poor corporate image. The classic and the new environments could have had a cynergetic effect for Amiga Inc., but by alienating the classic developper and user base, they have lost this opportunity and not managed to convince many to develop for their new platform, if one could call it that.

More good news for Amiga Inc. Makes me wonder how many other deals are going on behind the scenes.

Kinda boring critics again this round. Are those the best attacks you guys can come up with? [rhetorical]

This is all crap. It has nothing to do with our classic Amigas and our OS4.

And none of it benefitting OS4? If Amigainc mention their 'PPC strategy' they are refering to pocketPC, not powerpc.

Meanwhile, whatever is left of the former amiga community is split into factions, started by the red group, instead of unifying towards a common API and hammering out a deal with Amigainc.

A lot of these deals could benefit the development of OS4. like the U3 deal,etc. Also, no one wants to pay the license to Amigainc to have the Amiga-Anywhere ported to OS4, so that 'anywhere content runs on OS4.

I don't see this as good news but rather as sad news.

There we have a company that controls IP to our beloved Amiga and is making business deals (well, some kind of business deals) with technology that has nothing to do with Amiga, except for the name, and yet they do not have the decency to answer to business proposals from parties involved in market that still is Amiga.

Well this just makes me

edit: adding some "\n"

@Tomas

Yes, very sad. AmigaAnywhere has nothing to do with AmigaOS evolution.....

Too bad there's no forum on this website where we could talk about what is really Amiga i.e. AmigaOS of course.

This is our job, to all of us to make the world know about OS4. When we'll have new hardware again, we have to move all united and spread the word. I hope all Amigans will act and speak and show OS4 everywhere around them.
Now waiting for the hardware.

I'll probably sound like a dunce for saying this...

Isn't Amiga Anywhere just a layer to run Amiga Anywhere software? How can they possibly say that it is an OS when in reality it shares more in common with Java???

Perhaps I'm wrong, if so I apologise.

It seems to me that Amiga is merely selling what they currently have. A company have bought Amiga and are usurping the brand for their own ends. With all due respect to Commodore aren't they doing the same? Well at least they haven't promised us an up to date C64 for now...

I always hoped that AA would be a layer to run old amiga programmes, much like the unsuspecting public of Brazil will probably expect, but running on embedded hardware. Whilst on a phone some games would look crap, on my PDA I think they'd be pretty cool - though Lemmings and even Worms would be virtually unplayable - each sprite is only a few pixels tall, my screen is a few inches by a few inches with a resolution of 640 x 480 - they would be tiny.

Amiga Inc left the AOS to the capable hands of Hyperion and the hardware to god knows who, I half suspect that when the product is fully complete they will be sure to jump up and down claiming it is their ball and they are going home. Failing that, maybe Garry Hare forgot to mention the other work that Amiga Inc were working on when he jumped ship...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again I just wonder who is it that is keeping Amiga Inc alive and why are they negating us??? I wouldn't be surprised if a certain company we all love to hate had some impact on this...

There isn't on this site but there is on another... it's Amiga.com.

People who become aware of this deal are more likely to jump on the Amiga.com website before Amigaworld.net or Amiga.org. I think we should keep a permanent presence on that site at least directing potential interested customers to look at other sites.

:::UPDATE:::

Just posted a compliment to Amiga on the Amiga.com website with a little PS note at the bottom. Perhaps a few more posts to help my cause. It's in the Amiga News section.

"...where is the support from amiga inc??? "

They're just using the Amiga name. It's been pretty evident from the beggining to those who have followed what happened more closely.

@Jose

I agree, hope they go down and under, Hyperion should buy the full right to “Amiga OS” brand so it can be misused to sell Amiga Anywhere, Amiga name should NOT be attached to the PocketPC,

@all

We should redirect all links to http://os4.hyperion-entertainment.biz now, and delete all references to “www dot Amiga dot com”

We should write PowerPC not PPC on all web pages referring to PowerPC CPU’s, lets not shorten it.
