Hardware News   Hardware News : Sony PS3 confirmation details!
posted by TrebleSix on 9-May-2006 8:15:29 (4791 reads)
The new PlayStation 3 (PS3) will hit Japanese stores on 11 November, with the US and Europe following less than a week later, Sony has announced.

The console will be available in two versions starting at $499 (394 euros).

The PS3 controller will include Bluetooth technology for wireless play with the addition of USB cables to wire the controller for recharging.

Although the most astonishing of thing about the controller that was announced at the pre-E3 press confrence was the inclusion of a six-axis sensing system and the removal of the vibrating core. The press release stated that, "Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."

Pictures of the PS3 dev kits can be seen here and here

Agreed. I fail to see how this relates to AmigaOS and Amiga-related entertainment software.

@ balis

For three reasons:

a) There has been talk of an OS4 port to the PS3

b) We have had Xbox360 news items, and a few other items here before as well.

c) We have a genral technology section on aw
Use the search function to see similar news items.

Something like, "WMP v.11.1a has been updated to 11.1b" is not processed here.

There has been a lot of talk about running OS4 on the PS3 and/or another Cell based machine, so it is a relevent news item.

And to be honest, looks like the only piece of hardware going to get released which could have the potential of running OS4.

The PS3 will be equipped with Blu-ray and Pre-Installed HDD and be available at ¤499 (20GB HDD) and ¤599 (60GB HDD) in Europe, and $499 and $599 in the US.

I heard on the Chris Moyles show this morning that it will be around £350 in the UK.

@ Bodie_CI5

a) OK and it was pure speculation... There also has been talk about OS4 on Peg or X86 or iMac or Efika etc...and there was no news item about the Efika's release for instance or Peg3

b) OK, then what about Nintendo DS, Wii, Peg3, New iMac, etc...
This point is irrelevant IMHO

c) see point b) but IMHO, those subject should be discussed in forums not as headlines news

The News Article stays.

a) Then put one forth if you wish

b) Then put one forth if you wish

c) see both point a) and b) as well as:

Note who posts the article

Note who posts the article

Further to point a), yes it may have been pure speculation, fantasy, wet dream, reality, whatever. Point is, it WAS discussed on the site and on numerous occassions.

If they continue usual console pricing schemes it'll be £499 and £599 in the UK...

I can only hope this isnt the case.

@balis

I completely agree with you here (especially your point a), but it's pointless to argue as nothing is going to change, so best to ignore and be happy

It's wrong to let non-amiga related hardware hit the frontpage of AW, no matter how much it's been discussed before. I immidiately get annoyed when i find out it's not about amiga (at first glimpse one even hopes it's about amiga hardware, just to find out it's not......arghh)

get rid of the foreign hardware on the frontpage

Just my two euro's on the matter

That's not good if you like to play racing games.. I hope that there will be dualshock version too.

Interesting stuff.

The six-axis sensing intregues me a lot. Could it be some sort of Nintendo Revolution/Wii style copy? Not sure about having to hold the joypad with both hands for this. The Nintendo pad is designed so thta it could be held with one or two hands. The PS pads aren't so universal in that sense. Still interesting.

Agreeed on the vibration issue though. I'd like to see a DualShock version of the pad too. If done properly, feedback "from" the game can be subtle & effective.

Either way though, I'm down for a machine. I started on the Sega Saturn side of the fence & when the choices became... different... I went down the PS2 route. I really DO have to check out the GC too.

FuZion.

zorro: the concept of the controller is not stolen or whatever from nintendo.

The background story for the controller is that when Archer maclean did MERCURY for the PSP he asked sony if they could put that system onto the PSP (something called 6 way tilting or whatever) , it never happened (a shame really...imagine LOCOROCO with that!) on PSP (maybe on psp2.0) so here it is on PS3...lets hope we get LOCO ROCO and MERCURY ps3 versions then
