Software News   Software News : FryingPan v4.c Released
   posted by jahc on 16-May-2006 16:29:15 (5161 reads)
Frying Pan, the great shareware CD/DVD writing program for Amiga, has recently been updated! The author states on his website:

I've released 0.4c FryingPan for all of you who had troubles or ideas recently. It fixes a number of problems (I bet it includes new ones as well), so - what do we have?

- read & write speeds are set right after the disc is discovered,
- Amiga specific rockridge extensions appear to work good - enjoy your comments & protection bits :),
- Gauge has been updated a bit...,
- Contents are now discovered properly on some "incompatible" -ROM drives
- Writing does not end at 65535% any longer heh,
- Filerequesters will show you your .info files,
- You can name your drives,
- A requester is displayed when you try to write too much data to your disc,
- No overburning for DVDs allowed,
- You can specify system type for your disc (so you can make a bootable MOS disc, too ;),
- Data is updated after erase operation,
- MUI4 problem has been fixed,
- You can start FP from an icon (yeeee!! hehe),
- Iconifying FP will display its icon instead of default one.

Also, an update was released shortly after which provided the following changes:
- File dates are preserved,
- A tiny menu added - now you can set your FP mui settings,
- in_WAV module added (please note: there is no compression support. assumed file format is: 44kHz, stereo, 16b/ch, little endian),
- minor fixes done to the GUI,
- minor fixes done to the ISO builder,
- i've done my best to make in_MP3 handle regular files a bit better, but libmad has troubles...

An easy to use installer is now included too.

Download it from the Frying Pan website.

You can purchase a keyfile for 25 EURO, and it will work with any optical drive you own. The old registering system has been abandoned. More information here: http://www.tbs-software.com/fp/registration.phtml

This program works flawlessly with OS4's 68k emulation, OS3 and MOS!

@jahc

Version 4.c? I don't think we've even seen v1.0 yet
I know, I know, it's v0.4c. But look at the title.

@nubechorre

Demo restrictions
What are the restrictions of demo version? Can I burn anything with it?
No, actually not. Version 0.4 will no longer let You write data in real mode; instead drive will make an attempt to burn Your discs in test mode. Another limitation is that reading & writing is limited to a minimum speed. This restrictions include burning, erasing and other actions that will modify Your CD / DVD contents as well as any action that will access your drive in any way, even speed probing.
As far as the demo version does not allow You to burn data to disc, You still can use it as data extractor. For more information concerning this topic check other subpages on this site :).

I found I had to tick "Probe speeds" and "Enable Automation" on the "Hardware Settings" page (select using the lower cycle gadget) of the "Drive" section before my burner would be recognised properly and the "Write" option became available.

Oh wow. The installer is a prime example of why you should use the OS installer.

I've never seen an install program as broken as this. It was kind of amusing - in that very special kind of way.

@Trezzer

You must be talking about the version 0.4b installer. The 0.4c installer uses he OS installer and is much better as a result.

I installed that blue theme last night, and didnt really like it.. but wow, that white highlander theme looks beautiful! I just "installed" it, hehe.

Is it just my imagination or is FP writing DVD media at their top speed now? I think 2x was faster than 4x when doing DVD's a few months ago! Not so anymore though I think!

AFAIK, Rich, the old key should work with all your drives. See the writeup on the website.

@jahc

A small note: Perhaps yopu shouldn't snapshot the install icon in the far bottom right corner. I had to scroll a long way in the window to find it. The created directory during install is also snapshotted somewhere.

It is better if all icons are unsnapshotted except for the program icon within its program window, then they will find their way into every user's dirs.

Else, the program looks good! Like burning software use to look these days MakeCD, that I use, has the most messy interface I have ever seen, and very early-90's looking too.

OK, i also have to PROBE speeds n my Lite-ON burner while i don't need to probe on my pioneer nor my NEC burner , it seems to be needed for some brands only...maybe its time for a small FAQ with list of units or maybe we could provide Error with some information regarding theese "problems" .

cheers

Thanks for continuing the development of this software... we need a modern burning tool and I hope this can become better and improve on each new release.
