Hardware News   Hardware News : CPU Demo Delayed: Death of the Optimist
   posted by ackcontrls on 10-Jun-2006 16:27:00 (15553 reads)
Due to time and resource constrainsts the CPU demo has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled at this time. There have been technical difficulties getting the CPU module to work with both the existing AmigaOne boards and the new TSi109 based design and I need time to analyze the issue. I will be available for questions in #Amigaworld on irc.amigaworld.net at 1500 hrs EDT. Apologies for those anxiously awaiting the demonstration.

@kronos

Unfortunately, that is true. Anything could happen between now and the projected release, but at this point all we have to go on is the current status of the project. At this point, it looks like he will have his license(s).

I too wish things would have worked out for AHT as well as others, but for whatever reason, it didn't. Hopefully there will be more projects that do succeed in the long run, as opposed to those which fall by the wayside.

I propose that nobody announce a demo until the thing they are claiming to going to be demoing is working. Poll? Then, post pictures of the thing with the announcement.

I really hope so. If really something happened regarding the license issue, it must have happened within the last two weeks.

From the 18 May IRC-log:
Quote:
[02:05:16] < AmigaBlitter > What about licensing? How do you have obtained licensing?

Quote:
[02:19:37] < ackcontrols > Going to get the h/w working first and worry about that after.

Since Adam is spending so much time on the various hardware projects he is doing, the order to work on the hardware first and then worry about licensing appears a bit risky to me.
I hope there won't be any last-minute amendments from Amiga Inc. that would put a risk on the license contract.

they will just try to fix the issue untill they realise that Genesi was right, this CPU isn't worth it, and won't work propoerly on a Pegasos/amigaOne. BPlan spent a lot of time trying to make it work and finalyl decided that it was worthless. Why the hell don't they listen to experts ?

"not reschuled" of course.

Good points. If "Amiga inc" had adopted "morphos" as "Amiga OS4" back then maybe we would actually have a decent user base instead of 2 warring factions. But no, instead they claim they are developing it (remember on schedule and rockin') and everyone waited 3 years to see os4 come out. Nice way to KILL the market. In hindsight I almost feel that Ainc killed the Amiga classic market on purpose.

As potential customers our job is to buy and purchase the stuff. You want us to build it all as well?

Actually it may well come to that.

An embarrassing stand down. Surely you would actually KNOW if the hardware worked before the demo. If there was a 'shakes head and buries it in hands' emoticon I'd use it now.

@realize

We have a saying where I come from: "it takes two to tango." It could be argued equally well that Genesi refused to reach any sort of compromise with Amiga Inc (instead, they decided to sue - that's not handing out an olive branch, that's beating you over the head with one). I don't think either side can claim to be the innocent victim here.

@Codesmith

Sure, but by the time Genesi decided to sue (which wasn't without warnings, remember the "shut up or put up" posts) the baby had been in the well for years allready....

Which part of "I don't think either side can claim to be the innocent victim here" didn't you understand?

@hatschi

I think the most Amiga Inc would do is to ask for more licence money, not stop
the entire project. That is simply what happened to the AHT deal.
That can of course be a show stopper for a low cost project like AHT's but not
for desktop boards or upgrades.

And there is no reason why it cannot happen to ACK and Troika in exactly the same way.

Why not? Do you really think that our current hobby projects are better funded and thus have more room for negotiations? I would rather think both are on an extremely tight budget and every small amendment could easily kill the deal.

Why the hell would you want to settle for yet another untested developer board??!! What the hell is wrong with all of you?

Well, people have tried and failed to get legit OS4 licenses for the Peg. You don't want to hear that it's because of money, well, people offered money and were ignored, so it must be something else. Is it Amiga Inc. holding a grudge and won't allow Peg support no matter what? Maybe. Are they being consistent with any hardware offer and ignoring everyone with any alternative? Maybe.

As it is, it appears that yet another untested developer board might be the only option to run OS4 on something people can actually buy. Besides, why do you think that ACK won't properly test things before selling it? Why do you believe that bplan, only bplan, and no one other than bplan can made quality hardware?

No I don't think they are better funded. It's just that a settop box cannot handle $5 per
unit more (example sum). I think a $5 raise per board of a motherboard doesn't kill
the deal?! I'm not talking about any prepaid sum of money now.
