Software News   Software News : Quake 3 ported to AmigaOS 4.0
   posted by spotUP on 6-Jul-2006 14:52:10 (18874 reads)
This is a quick and dirty port of Quake 3 for OS4. To play, you need the latest
version of the Quake 3 data files (retial version plus all patches). You also
need the latest MiniGL.library (included in this archive, copy to libs:).

The port uses the QVM jit, so it can also run all the mods (tested with Urban
Terror).

Source code is available on OS4depot.net too. The port is unpotimized, so don't
expect it to be blazing fast.

If you want to contact me, write a mail to thomasf()hyperion-entertainment.biz

DISCLAIMER: This software is provided as-is, with no guarantee for usability.

Also note: This port has NOTHING to do with Hyperion Entertainment, it's a spare
time project of me. DO NOT write to Hyperion Entertainment regarding support.

@spotUP

If I understand it... Mickey_C asked for Quake III to be ported... Soon after you port it...

Well, Please Mickey_C, ask for FireFox Port followed by WoW... And we might get them this week !

WHAT....?

This release has been totally unexpected! I've just asked m3x some days ago, on the Codex Alpe Adria meeting, about this release, the answer I have been given is that Hyperion have other priorities. I'm so glad that they have changed idea I see that it's the same port made by Thomas. I've been told that this port requires a newer kernel, to be released with upd #5. How does this work with upd#4's kernel?
BTW, are you Spot behind this release, too?

And there's the new minigl.library, too, I have to test it ASAP with rRootage! In case it improves compatibility with the present Minigl SDL ports, I'd suggest to release the library in standalone format, too.

Again, GREAT NEWS!

A very happy Varthall

Many thanks for the port! One question - you mention that we need "the latest version of the Quake 3 data files (retial version plus all patches)" - I assume we can buy any version of QIII, but where can we acquire the necessary patches?

@Aminicle

It makes sense if you think about it. Hyperion are still working on OS4 (if nothing else, they still need to finish the new virtual memory system, plus there are still quite a few known bugs in upd4). Software normally gets written in stages (eg "by the end of Stage 3 FFS and the USB drivers must be feature complete, and there must be no priority 1 bugs anywhere else"), so when the next big stage is complete they'll probably package it nicely and call it "update 5" (the only other alternative is to just sit on it, which kinda makes the whole thing a waste of time). If by some miracle someone is actually selling OS4-legal hardware by that stage, it will probably then be called "OS4 final" instead (and there will be much dancing of bananas )

@JurassicC

Not really. There's still no hardware, no indication that new hardware is anywhere other than "in progress, please wait", and this game will only be playable by people who have OS4 and a supported gfx card (my Radeon 9800, for example, is still in the "unsupported" list).

The only thing that would stop the "no hardware" threads would be either actual hardware, or something of the magnitude of a Firefox port or update 5.

It doesn't run here, too, althought I'm using the demo version files, it might not be supported. It exits without any output. I wonder what's that ".q3a" in the homepath inside the q3 script, and if I should leave it there. The baseq3 directory is called demoq3 here.
