   posted by rhino on 19-Aug-2006 16:16:22 (2861 reads)
A new version of AmiPodder, the Amiga's only podcast receiving utility is now available.

Read more for features...

Version 1.5 has several new features, many of them added in response to user requests. You can now organise your podcasts in to groups. The user interface has been enhanced with the ability to change the status of multiple podcasts and progress bars have been added to slow operations. Compatibility with podcast feeds has also been improved with support for redirected downloads and various types of character encoding in URLs. In addition, AmiPodder can now work behind an HTTP proxy and several bugs have been fixed.

AmiPodder 1.5 is written in AREXX using rxMUI and therefore works on OS 3.x, OS 4 and MorphOS. It's released as freeware and can be downloaded from:

Nice

Shame the secure stuff didn't make this release, still there's always the long-winded website downloading process, eh?

I'm planning to include it in 1.6. As 1.5 already included some fairly major internal changes to support the grouped channels list I thought it was better to get it out and then start working on other areas of the program (like RSS downloading).

I'm hoping to have 1.6 in beta in time for BigBash so there shouldn't be too long to wait!

Thanks for the good work and regular updating of AmiPodder, I have installed it and the rxMUI stuff and it works fine on my Amithlon system now

It's on the to-do list for 1.6. If anyone knows of an available ARexx script which is localised (one that uses rxMUI would be ideal) that I could use as a reference then please let me know.

Thanks

Robert

There's a short example at the bottom of the --rexxhost-- section of the locale.library Autodoc in the OS4 SDK. I suspect the same example is in the 3.x version as well, although I haven't checked. Reproduced here for completeness:

Quote:

/* localetest.rexx */

/* Make sure locale is loaded as a function host */
IF ~SHOW(L, 'locale.library') THEN DO
CALL ADDLIB('locale.library', 0, -30)
END;

say ConvToLower("A");
say ConvToUpper("b");
say IsAlpha("1");

catalog = OpenCatalog("sys/workbench.catalog", "english", 0);
say GetCatalogStr(catalog, 34, "default");
say CloseCatalog(catalog);
say StrnCmp("test", "test", 2);

Thanks, I didn't know about that! I'll look into it.

@Rhino

The only fault I can come up with is that when adding a URL with a large number
of files there`s no progress indicator(I though Amipodder had crashed). It also
seems to take over the machine, Simplemail goes into go slow when trying to
fetch emails at the same time.

Great work though i`ve been having fun finding new pod.

Thanks for trying AmiPodder.

The XML parser is rather slow and processor intensive, I don't think ARexx is really ideal for this sort of thing. I'll look into adding a progress gauge to this in a future release.

I think this is just because it uses a lot of processor time. I'm not doing anything in the script that should disable multitasking or anything like that.

Out of interest, what are your system specs?

Cheers,

Robert

Yeah Aweb seems slower but still runs ok when adding a big URL, but if you
try to fetch email Simplemail goes into meltdown for a while, so perhaps it`s
a Simplemail problem.

I`m using a A1XE with 800mhx G3 and Radeon 7000 and 512mb of RAM.

I've done a bit more research, and it seems that the ARexx interpreter runs at priority 4 which would explain why AmiPodder tends to bog down other applications. On my Amithlon system, where I use AmiPodder most of the time, I run Executive which tends to mask these effects. I think there may be a way for me to change the priority in the script which should help.

I also have an XE (with a G4) so I can test on a similar system to you.

Thanks for your comments,

Robert

I`ve just noticed another possible problem, after updating one of my feeds
all the old files disappeared, though they are still on my hardrive. Is this
because they are no longer availble from the URL or is it a potential problem
in Amipodder?

The feed in question is:-

By default, AmiPodder only displays the podcast episodes that are available in the feed. This works well on most feeds because the authors keep a history of episodes in their feed.

Unfortunately the BBC usually only keep the current episode in their feeds (I think this is due to licensing) so the history disappears from AmiPodder.

If you want AmiPodder to keep a history of episodes, even after they are removed from the feed, then go to the "Automation" tab in prefs and uncheck "Remove old entries from items list.".

Hope that helps,

Robert

Ok, just checked the prefs and the odd thing is this option is already unticked.

I`ll let you know if I notice this again.

I've just been looking at the code and I think there may be some situations where the "delete old" setting is not respected. I'll make sure this works properly in the next release.

Thanks for troubleshooting this for me.

Robert
