Software News   Software News : Scalos v41.4 Released
posted by spotUP on 18-Oct-2006 7:12:45 (4273 reads)
Scalos, a desktop replacement for the Amiga has been updated.
Archives for both AmigaOS 68K and MorphOS.
We are proud to present the very first Scalos V41.3 alpha version for AmigaOS4

New in 41.4:
Improvement: Added optional drop menu to allow comfortable selection between copy, move, or create-link operation
Improvement: Added optional icon images for popup menus
Bugfix: errors on link creation were never reported
Improvement: In German translation, replaced all "link" by "Verknüpfung"
Improvement: Added single-window lasso mode, with scrolling window contents
This mode is invoked by dragging mouse with configurable qualifier key
Bugfix: Text icon selection was drawn incorrectly if "Name column selects text icons" was on and window was scrolled horizontally
Bugfix: Text icon lasso selection used to ignore "Name column selects text icons" flag
Improvement: Added support for backfilled thumbnail icons, with selectable color and transparency
Improvement: lifetime of cached thumbnail icons is now configurable for each drawer. Lifetime may now be set to "forever".
Improvement: Added option to always generate square thumbnail icons.
Improvement: Added ability to scale background images without guigfx.library.
Improvement: Added new parameter options for menu CLI commands. "%w" inserts path name of current window, "%d" inserts device name of argument icons (useful for "eject" tool).
Bugfix: Corrected naming of Scalos main process "Workbench" - should fix all remaining path inheritance problems.
Improvement: Added jpegpicture.pvplugin thumbnail generator for JPEG images. Thumbnails are generated 2 to 3 times faster than with default thumbnail generator
Improvement: Added filetype-specific preview (=thumbnail) generation plugin system. Standard defpicture.pvplugin behaves exactly like previous build-in thumbnail generation
Improvement: Windows are now updated immediately when drag-drop copying icons, moving icons, or creating links
Improvement: Borders around tooltip bubbles are now drawn with antialiasing (GFX card required)
Bugfix: Applying popup menus to all selected icons didn't work with a single icon under the mouse pointer that hasn't been selected before clicking RMB
Improvement: Added new user setting to always apply popup menus to every selected icon, regardless of qualifier
Improvement: Added selectable transparency for tooltip bubbles. Improvement: Clicking into startup splash window causes it to close immediately
Added setting: Switch on/off the displaying of image thumbnails to be shown if they have no icons
Improvement: SQL tables are initialized each time the database is opened, so the thumbnail database can be safely renamed or deleted anytime, and Scalos creates new database next time a drawer is opened
Improvement: Moved image scaling and dithering code to shared library scalosgfx.library

This news entry is regarding Scalos, not Scala.

Good to see Scalos is still being updated, although never used it personally, or DOpus for that matter. ClassAction was my favourite fle manager thingy on OS3.9, it rocks .

I wasn't much of a scalos user, I did check it out for a bit and was fairly happy with it.
Good to see that its being updated and I think I will be looking forward to trying out the alpha version
on Amiga One, hope that goes good.

Hey... nice study project...

But beside that it hasn't got the looks of OS4, outdated icon sets, outdated features; a lot if things are already in OS4, and most important....

.. It's not a STANDARD, so why the hell should we need such a thing???... .

A niche market in a niche market... yeah great!

It supports PNG icons as standard!!! that way you can put the icons you like easily.

outdated features

I don't agree. I bet it's much more "asyncronous" that standard WB

AmigaOS4 isn't the "standard OS" either... why should we need it?

Would you prefer that he hadn't published an OS4 version???

Having options is good! Instead of bashing a developer who has decided to support OS4 why don't you simply don't post anything if you are not interested on it?

i guess scalos comes from the days when amiga os 3.1 wasn't updated, and updates was very unlikely.

Hi Scalos team!

I use AIAB on the A1 and Scalos 41.3 works fairly decent. Sorry, but it's
crap in OS4, but that's OK; it's a 68K thing! . Drag & Drop fails often. Radeon?

I'll checkout the the new version! Working without JIT in OS3.1 doesn't sound
too great, but keeping to minmals speeds up thing. Scalos WB isn't all that
bad considering this!

@snuffy&framiga

please report the bugs you find to the ScalOS team.

(I'm not a member of the team, but I think that everyone who develops something for amiga these years deserves our respect and support)

Well, I for one am glad to see another update.

However, I tried updating my AIAB installation (previously using Scalos 41.3) and noticed:

- Drag n Drop completely broken (locks up the system). Try dragging a file into RAM: for example.

- Thumbnails cannot be disabled, regardless of the settings used in the preferences.

That said, it is looking rather lovely when combined with AfA-OS and Zune.

Cheers,
James

Hi Jim,

Glad I made a 41.3 backup! It horibbly slower too; remember I don't have JIT. One of the reasons
for slow down in all the modules that in this one. I stick to r10.5 and Scalos 41.3

I don't spell it "AIAB"; it's "A1AB" -- Amiga in a box in a A1 box! I just posted a
picture in my album at 'JustAmiga' Yayhoo Groups --Dennis' AmigaOne. :)

@Crumb

Far as I'm concerned, 68K stuff is buggy now in OS4. Even Euae and WinUAE are
not on the same page. The hardware, the software is no longer classical Amiga.
End of Bug Report!

Hello, I tried this a little more during the weekend, and it would appear that the updated newiconobject.datatype is to blame for the drag-n-drop problems. Just revert back to the previous version of this file and the lock-ups no longer occur.

Take care,
James
