Agree, this news item has a minimum of content, a little less and we would not have approved it.

| If anyone's interested changes are:
41.5 Bugfix: Information.module(MUI): garbage was displayed instead of device handler ID string Improvement: Thumbnail cache cleanup now always removes entries for non-existing files Improvement: Added menu command to manually initiate thumbnail cache cleanup Information.module(MUI): Added new menu option to get size of drawers always or not at startup. A new "InfoAuGetSize" variable will be created into "env:scalos/" and "envarc:scalos/" to always or never get size at startup. Replaced "information.prefs" by "InfoShowiconPath" variable to show/hide icon path at startup Information.module(MUI): Added new menu option to show or hide the icon path gadget. A new "information.prefs" file will be created into "env:scalos/" and "envarc:scalos/" to always or never show icon path gadget after startup. Removed icon object's selecting codes which allowed the similar "hide/show" function Improvement: Added support for centered and unscaled background images, and for scaled images with correct aspect Improvement: Added support for single-colour or gradient backfill Improvement: path for internal datatypes image cache (previously fixed "t:") is now user-configurable. On startup, all old Scalos files are removed from that location. Improvement: About window no longer starts with empty area Improvement: Added button to temporaily stop scrolling of about window Improvement: amigaiconobj35.datatype can now retrieve ARGB icons if icon.library does support ICONCTRLA_GetARGBImageData[12] Bugfix: Color palette wasn't loaded correctly on Scalos startup Improvement: Added build number to Scalos version information (Splash + about) Bugfix: Delete.module crashed with file names longer than 39 characters Improvement: (IconProperties module) Added SCALOS_BROWSERMODE tooltype support. Improvement: "view by type" now finally works Improvement: "type" column in text windows is now functional Bugfix: installer script failed if languaga setting was different from "English", "Francais", or "Deutsch". Improvement: optimized text window refresh. Now windows is only redrawn if really required. Bugfix: Moving files didn't correctly update "Show All Files" windows Bugfix: Changing truetype icons font didn't have immediate effect (required restart) Improvement: devicefilter.plugin no longer requires Workbench V44+, i.e. filtering of device no also works with OS3.0 and 3.1 Improvement: icons won't stay selected after double-click anymore Bugfix: added work-around in defpicture.pvplugin to circumvent a problem with some MorphOS datatypes (e.g. GIF and BMP) that cause the last byte of sac_BitMap to be decremented by 1 when the datatypes object is disposed Bugfix: never try to open SQlite3 thumbnail database if user-configured thumbnail cache database name is empty Bugfix: Added safeguard to avoid crash when OpenDrawerByName() was called with a device name before desktop window was completely initialized. This could happen if insufficient StartDelay_Seconds for persistent window plugin was selected Improvement: font preferences about draw mode and background color for icon text are now taken into account Bugfix: incorrect parsing of Workbench font preferences caused wrong background pen and draw mode to be used Bugfix: added a workaround to defpicture.pvplugin that permits thumbnails to be generated under OS3.0/3.1 and Picasso96 Bugfix: Information.module failed to close opened libraries on abort due to missing MCC modules Bugfix: defpicture.pvplugin opened scalosgfx.library twice Bugfix: Dropmenu did ask separately for each one if multiple icons were dropped Bugfix: it was not possible to turn off thumbnails _________________ Currently planning to upgrade my Amstrad CPC

| Please do not get mad at me for asking this question. I have never used SCALOS before nor seen anyone use it.
I was just reading about it on the website just now. It says it does everything Workbench does + tons more kewl stuff!!!! And it says it is totally compatible to the real Workbench! It sounds very groovy!
So my question is: Why on Earth would anyone still use Workbench instead of Scalos? _________________ Wanna try a wonderfull magical Amiga strategy game? Total Chaos AGA

And when DOpus Magellan2 does lot more than Workbench and Scalos and it's totally compatible too, why on earth anyone has used WB/Scalos within last 10 years? :) I know I couldn't use plain WB anymore and can't understand why people won't upgrade from standard WB, but some people just want to stick with original for reason or other :) _________________ - The wiki based MorphOS Library - Your starting point for MorphOS - Software made by jPV^RNO

The reasons I can think of for not using Scalos or Dopus Magellan 2 are: - Laziness, (i.e., can't be bothered trying it) - Scared you'll install it, won't like it and can't go back to workbench - Worried that there might be some small incompatibilities that get in the way - It's not the official workbench. I want to use the official one
If you were to make Scalos or Dopus Magellan 2 the official workbench, people would automatically start using it once they upgrade. Come to think of it, workbench is supposed to be rewritten for Amiga OS 4.x (where x >= 1). Maybe they should look at using Scalos or Dopus Magellan instead of writing one from scratch.

I think the answer to that is hinted in the name. People who use Scalos turn into reptiles. |

I think DOM2 is compatible to OS3.1 and that's about it without patches. But, it does require a startup script change. And I have never worked out how to use it.
It doesn't run perfectly on OS4.0. So how compatible is it? Okay that's a tuff ground to test it on. |

I thought DOM was meant to be the 4.x WB replacement. But now it looks like another slow OS4 port in progress. See anything in the OS4 PIP? |

And none of them are good reasons :)
- Laziness and Amiga doesn't fit in same sentence, you'll always be tuning something anyway :) - I'm not sure about Scalos, but with Mag2 you always can boot to Workbench too and nothing from WB installation is removed. - If there's some, then you can always boot to WB instead. And Mag2 uses mostly AmigaOS functions for everything, so there isn't much incompatibilities. - Why to stick blindy on official, if there's better options too? I guess nobody uses default software like ED and AmigaMail etc from AmigaOS.. so why not change the "desktop" too... the underlying OS still remains the same anyway :) _________________ - The wiki based MorphOS Library - Your starting point for MorphOS - Software made by jPV^RNO

Umm.. I don't get the point fully now... same patches work with or without DOM2 and OS3.9 can be installed with it too.
Only thing it needs is change of the LoadWB command and assign to user-startup. You can always change LoadWB back to original if you want to remove it. And when booting DOM2 with shift key pressed, it loads original LoadWB (and therefore the original AmigaOS without DOM2).
Getting into it and figuring all the genious in it takes a while... also the default settings could be better. Reading the docs also makes learning faster :)

True. The only other reason that I can think of for Dopus Magellan is that you have to buy it. Anyway, my point is: if you want everyone to use it, make it THE standard.
I tried Scalos back when it was half ported to OS4 and unstable. I removed it soon after. I'll try this version some time.

| Very nice everything and all, but WHY would I install and use it on/with OS4 ?
This is a serious question, not a trollish one...
What are the features of scalos that someone would have to have when using OS4 ?

| Scalos is really nice. But it is a pain in the a$$ to install! I did a fresh install in WinUAE, with a clean OS3.9 on it, and all kind of libraries were missing... The link for render.library is missing (and a few others links were dead). The preferences did not work either. My point is that there should be a complete archive, with all needed libraries and plugins.
Scalos is nice, but there should be a better installer for it.
PS, will we ever see Scalos ported to AROS? http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/index.php?number=48 |

| Great stuff, I have been looking forward to this release for quite a while.
Time to put a new AIAB update online - assuming my host is still working ;(
Keep up the great work Scalos team/individual!
Cheers, James x

| I have been looking for info as to which Amiga Distros use Scalos.
As near as I can tell, AmiKit and Amiga SYS 3 Plus do not support Scalos. Why not?
Amiga In A Box (AIAB) may or may not. The website is broken so I can't get any info.
Why don't all Amiga Distros support Scalos? _________________ Wanna try a wonderfull magical Amiga strategy game? Total Chaos AGA

Installed it on OS4 and it got messed up (Prefs as warned) and a Grim Reaper that could be killed came at the very beginning. Had to delete c:Loadwb and rename the Loadwb.original to Loadwb. Evertything back as normal, thwn delete all the things it installed. So if someone did the same "mistake" as me with the beta, You can go back. A Unistall would be nice. Phew. |
