Software News   Software News : Epistula Update & MSN Plugin Source Released
   posted by Slash on 17-Oct-2007 9:59:39 (3370 reads)
Unfortunately due to personal circumstances I am, at this point in time but hopefully not forever, no longer able to spend as much time as I would like on my Amiga OS4 related projects.

So, with that in mind I will continue to host the latest downloads for Epistula and the plugins on a stripped down website, but will also provide the source code for the two plugins I was working on under an LPGL licence so someone can have a go at finishing them off and/or fixing any bugs.

For the full statement please visit my projects page.

Thanks.

I don't understand why you don't release sourcecode of epistula under GPL like before it was done with Yam, NewsCoaster, AWeb, and half mui mcc around mui system...even these programs are left by their authors and without their opened source code they would be dead. In a situation like Amiga platform just is, a program like Epistula release under GPL could give some hopes to user for having a modern IM ever updated and stable, like it's happened to yam, ecc...
A program like epistula under gpl would be a very gift to Amiga comunity...

I hope you will think about these my words...

Agreed. As you said, you quit working on Epistula to put food on the table.
So money won't be a problem for you soon hopefully.
Make Epistula open source, and see it grow, hopefully the result will make you happy!

I'm sorry to hear this, but I wish you all the best in your new job.
That said, Epistula + MSN plugin is in a very usable state right now, and I hope you (or another skilled coder) someday will find time to implement file transfer as well.

All the best!

He hasn't said that he's stopped working on it altogether, just that he now has very little time available to spend on it. I don't think that everyone has to open-source their code when they don't have a lot of time to spend on it anymore. He's LGPL'd the bits that he feels like open-sourcing (i.e., the plugins), so that they can be improved by others. Using the plugin SDK people can also write plugins for other protocols.

I think that was good move, think many are using the program, and it does have its issues, maybe development will go faster now that more people have chance to look at what’s happening in side the plug-ins and maybe fix the issues.

He made a great tool. Its not usable on my system as freezes but on many other it works. Still missing filedirect. I dont know detailed what LGPL really have but i hope someone can continue on it as its a great tool.

I hope you get a good and well paid job so you can continue coding on os4 later on. Cheers mate.

First, thanks for the great work you made. That's sad to see you can't develop Epistula more. I had some problems with MSN but this is great software. Maybe the new status 'open source' will help.

I wish you all the best and I hope you'll come back to Epistula when things will go better.

@All

Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate them.

For the people clamming for me to release the Epistula source code into the open, then I'd like to hazard a guess that they've probably never worked on a project for so long, which I have with Epistula, just to give it all away for nothing, for the good of the community.

It's not as simple as that, for me anyway, and I really am finding hard to even contemplate letting it all go, so I'm probably just going to keep it on ice for the time being.

FYI: The TOC/ICQ plugin source is now available on the very same website.

@Some dude on www.amiga-news.de

My German is non-existant, but I think you were wondering if Epistula was coded using ReAction? The answer to you question would be no, it is completely coded in Magic User Interface 3.9, the best GUI system every invented
