nice idea, but in fact then its just another "Amithlon" clone....

Except that it emulates the entire machine including the custom chipsets, not just the 68k CPU, which means more compatibility with old classic software is possible. Also, it is open-source and therefore more than one person can work on it than just one person and no ONE person or company can f'it up or hold it hostage. More imporantly, it can actually be downloaded, installed and run on just about any hardware out there, including laptops....Today. Once the core functionality is stable, then people can look at adding enhancements beyond AOS 3.x.

But I think integrating euae with Linux is better choice (much much better hardware support and I don't think AROS has much native software anyway). I was wondering if someone could make an AmigaOne emulator !?! *me runs and hide

Catched! The thing is... you still have acess to all that hardware support you talk about through AROS hosted, yet you do not have to poke around in linux to make behave it as Amiga, that's what AROS intent. In practice the best way to integrate euae with linux would be through AROS as it could be made to run in both ends, 68k and x86.

Now you may go...

shall I bother? Oh what the hell...

@DiscreetFX

I remember only recently that you stated AROS was not a viable option for your investors due the fact it lacked classic compatibility.

Looks like once this is complete, it will actually be MORE classic compatible than either of the other two systems you were apparently ready to pay significant amounts of money for. Worth a reconsideration?

I for one will be repartitioning my hard drive when this project is complete, and having me some superfrog and super skidmarks action on my way to work. Now if FIREFOX and THUNDERBIRD were available on this platform along with some sort of VM software to allow me to run MS Office under Win2k, I'd probably use it as my primary platform.

Hell I don't even believe in the bounty concept but I'm gonna donate to this one!

cheers!

You might be glad to know that indeed DiscreetFX was one of those who had contributed to the bounty...

If this becomes a reality it will be fantastic and is certainly worth supporting.

I think this is a step in the false direction. AROS has nothing to do with Amiga, sorry.

Thankfully it has nothing to do with those low life scummy amiga companies and aros does not require overpriced buggy pos motherboards. which those two alone is a good thing.

@Pleng

Yeah, I can't see why there would be *any* opposition to this whatsoever. This may very well be the only way that our platform continues. When the old software runs, we have a user base. When we have a modern browser, we have a future.

I mean, I wish the best for MOS and OS4 and hope to possess machines capable of running both someday, but Christ on a tricyle guys... it's time to start thinking about sure things, and AROS is most definately that.

Finally! I was waiting for one of your "insightful" and utterly unnecessary comments.

Couldn't you have left it with just the first thing you wrote?

Just make use of what we humans have by the means of selective memory and you'll have just that... Or perhaps it's time to create a dictionary glittering English so those harsh comments are replaced by less harmful yet truth ones

No. If someone wants to claim aros has nothing to do with the amiga then lets at least point out the positives, not dealing with the likes of amiga inc & hyperion more or less secures a better and brighter future, which is fact.

Anyway back to the "stick fingers in ears and go la-la".

LOL!

Isn't that the Bill McEwen way of running Amiga?

AROS FTW!

Why hasn't anyone talked about how he might do this....Is it that obvious?
IMHO he'd be mad to any AROS hacking, and he could quite easily create a universal solution that could be used on other OSes.

I think he should just create a method of utilising the UAE screen buffer, to "greenscreen" the real AmigaOS desktop background and superimpose desktop elements of the real AmigaOS desktop over AROS Wanderer. There's no reason he couldn't establish a protocol or API for this to work on all other E-UAE capable OSes like Linux, MorphOS or OS4 , maybe even Windows. There's a video out there of someone already doing this thing on Linux.

He may need to run an app on the real AmigaOS to establish a communication mechanism to adjust the real AmigaOS's visual implementation and call apps as required. You don't want to start multiple UAEs, but just have one. Later he can put some smarts into this real AmigaOS app to merge it visually with the host OS, for instance to make it look like it is running in hosted OS's windows and utilise its clipboard.

Such a method is used by Mac Virtualisation software and has been coined the term "coherence".

Down the track, if the AROS68k version becomes fully 68k compatable, you would no longer need your legal kickstart and AmigaOS, and could also think about calling x86 routines to speed up classic apps. While I don't know the state of the AROS68k version I would imagine that this scenario is way into the distant future.

Then if you really want to make AROS a functional desktop immediately, you might want to try the same "coherence" trick with Linux applications on AROS hosted, and effectively have your Firefox, OpenOffice, GIMP and Blender all appearing to work inside Wanderer. Then you distribute it as a Linux distro which would raise its profile. This would effectively make AROS usable for everyday stuff and get some more developer interest. Perhaps you could call this Linux distro AROSIX. Purists will still be able to run native AROS if it suits them and development wouldn't necessarily cease on native apps which would be the final goal.

Ok. Going back to my happy place now.
