Software News   Software News : KOG, a new game for AmigaOS 4
   posted by saimo on 17-Jan-2008 17:48:07 (4662 reads)
Hello everybody,

I would like to inform you that I have just released a new little game for AmigaOS 4, called KOG. You can download it from its website, where you can also find plenty of information about it (which is why I am not adding anything else here).

Enjoy,
saimo

Looks quite simple, but very interesting as well.

To bad I don't have an AOS 4 computer to run it on. Running it on Windblows Vista and it is cool!

Yes, it is very simple - for once, I wanted to do something that is immediately accessible

Nice to know it works even on Vista
Thanks for all!

Good game I like it!!
It haves an Arcade feeling a mix between Arkanoid and maybe others...
Hope to see soon a great and advanced commercial game for OS 4.0.
I will play it more tomorrow!

What an ingenious idea for a game! It took me a minute to realise how to play, but its quite addictive.

its sadly slow on my os4 system. SDL Games should better coded to native OS4...

May I ask what machine you have? Is it a G3 one?

The performance hit is mostly due to other factors here - namely, realtime interpolated rotation and zooming of the whole screen with just the CPU to avoid dependencies and making the game as portable as possible. The zooming step could be avoided with a fullscreen mode: I'll add it and, if it works, I'll release a new version ASAP.

@saimo:

CPU IS:

System: PPC604e (emuliert MC68020/FPU) (INST: Cache)
Level 1 Cache-Größe: 32768, Level 2 Cache-Größe: 0

under OS4 Classic

Yes, your system is a tad too slow for the heavy data transfer and calculation that occur.
Anyway, besides fullscreen I'll also add a fast non-interpolated rotation option, so that you can benefit from a major boost. Stay tuned

saimo

P.S. heh, I must admit it never occurred to me before that my game could be run on a OS4 classic Amiga!

@agnuz6569

The Amiga version now features a fast (but rough) rotation mode and also an experimental fullscreen mode. Give it a try and tell me whether the game becomes playable enough: if so, I can consider fixing the fullscreen mode - the problem with it is that since the resolution is 255x255 (i.e. non-standard) SDL and/or the host OS do not handle it correctly, so I have to use a "proper" mode (f.ex. 320x256) and render just the 255x255 area (it can be done, but needs more time and at the moment I do not have it).

@all

I have now implemented a proper fullscreen: the game tries to open a 320x256x32 screen, so make sure your system supports it. Also the rotation functions got improved.
Please try it out and let me know.

@Saimo:

Fullscreen is good now.
Windowmode 1x is good now.

But all with Window 2x or above seems to much for my cpu and/or permedia2

I guess you are referring to the fast rotation mode with "now"... right?
I'm happy to know you can enjoy the game now

You see, already 2x means a lot more of data to handle (more precisely, for each pixel there is 1 read plus 4 writes more - and that's without taking into account the increased data transfer handled by SDL), so memory/CPU bottlenecks become a real problem.
Anyway, since fullscreen works OK for you, you should not need zooming.

Thank you for reporting and playing the game!
