| Wow. Maybe some team from AmigaSys or AmiKit can now package everything together as a bundle using AROS... AROS bundles here we come eyyy. _________________ Quote:

| Ok, so I've got some negative thing to say.... sorry...
Why would anyone want AROS on the SAM when they could have AROS on a much much faster and cheaper x86 computer ? (maybe the poor and hopefull few who bought a SAM in anticipation of OS4 for SAM...)
And.... If an application was written for x86 AROS, would that also work on a PPC SAM ?? Or would it have to be rewritten or recompiled ??
Anyway this is a great job done Realy !

Now when I go to Aminet will there be Yet Another Aminet Icon?? One for PPC Aros programs and one for X86 AROS programs?
We haven't seen that before have we? The Amiga community being split/fractured. Sure lets have PPC & x86 version of AROS. Let's have some wars about it too. PPC AROS rules! X86 AROS is for for Magenta trolls!!
But seriously, could you imagine if we all just focused on one option. I mean I think a lot of people were hoping on AROS. Still, AROS, but even that is starting to fragment. _________________ A3000D (16mhz, 2MB Chip, 4MB Fast, SCSI (300+MB), SuperGen Genlock, Kick 3.1) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back in my day, we didn't have water. | @AmigaHeretic : Having a system which supports multiple CPUs IMO is a good thing, if done well unties software from hardware allowing it to adapt faster. New processors might even be the same processor line but some bits up. _________________ Indigo 3D Lounge, my second home. The Illusion of Choice | Am*ga

| @pixie:
Not really. Expecting people to release some program they wrote for all supported CPUs is not going to work very well. Unless AROS comes up with something like MacOS fat binaries where the compiler toolset handles everything transparently, we'll end up with separate depots for x86, PPC and maybe 68K as well (if MiniMig, NatAmi etc catch on). Each of those depots will have different programs, and I believe that what will eventually happen is that one of the three platforms will become the most popular and the other two will waste away with almost no software being written for them.
[Edit] Come to think of it, even fat binaries wouldn't solve that. Imagine that you own an x86 AROS box, and write a shoot-em-up. You test it thoroughly and release it. Immediately someone complains that it crashes on his SAM, and a few others chime in saying it happens to them too. You try to reproduce the problem, but you can't. That's when you realize that there's some subtle incompatibility between x86 AROS and PPC AROS that you'll need to put in a workaround for. Unless you buy yourself a SAM440 or find a patient volunteer to help you, how are you going to test your fix? Last edited by CodeSmith on 23-May-2008 at 12:36 AM. | All the more reason to support open source. Complainers that can't code will just have to complain better or learn how to code. Some people actually enjoy it (coding that is - lots of people like complaining).
SAM is interesting and worth supporting because it's low power and more than a few steps away from caveman x86 archtecture. Haiku / BeOS is getting closer to an alpha release ( http://www.haiku-os.org/news/2008-05-18/steady_progress_towards_alpha_1 ) and at that point there could be some interest in reviving support for other processors. MorphOS is also a possibility for SAM (even if a remote one...).
At the end of the day, if x86 doesn't bother you then use it and be happy. If it does bother you enough to put down some cash then pick an alternative and be happy. _________________

| I see this as a big step backwards for AROS. Everybody knows the future is x86 based systems yet we celebrate AROS on obscure and expensive custom hardware like AmigaOS 4.0 is on. It's like I'm taking crazy pills. _________________ ExecSG Team Lead

Actually you're right ! (even though I guess you were kidding)
I can't see what good will ever come out of AROS on EFIKA or SAM. It's just pointless. Put the energy into writing drivers for x86 hardware instead, please. _________________ AmigaOS or MorphOS on x86 would sell orders of magnitude more than the current, hardware-intensive solutions. And I think exactly the opposite, I see more sense for an AmigaOS clone running on a dedicated hardware than on a generic x86 box. Everyone has different ideas and tastes, and unfortunately you can't please everyone.

Which option it would be? Some users dont like PPC, some users dont like 68k, some users dont like x86. And some users dont like OS4, some users dont like MorphOS, some users dont like AROS. Some users dont like CGX, some users dont like P96, some users dont like MUI, some users dont like Reaction. Situation is more like it is with Linux where you can choose your favorite distro and hardware combination.
Choices in Amiga land are little bit more limited than in Linux but anyway... :) _________________ Amiga Developer Amiga 500, Efika, Mac Mini and PowerBook

There is AROS for 32 and 64bit CPUs so it cant work.
The best option would be that all platforms can run 68k binaries. It is obviously difficult in x86 and developers obviously wish to use features peculiar to their system, so that is not so common these days. _________________ Amiga Developer Amiga 500, Efika, Mac Mini and PowerBook
