| I will look forward to that as I still use the free version of protext given awake by an amiga mag more the a decade later or did it come bundled with my A1200 I cant remember any longer.
Anyway it just dose the job like cynusED and sometimes thats just what you need to get the job done without distractions.
As I has at school at the time there was no way I could have upgraded and now I have some spending money it to late.
But it sounds like yet another good use for the minimig just as soon as HD emulation is implemented.
But maybe I am a bit weird in just wanting simple tools some times to get the job done, don't get me wrong I like word as I am yet to find a better spel checker engine and I am dyslexic but I do have a tendency to rewrite the same sentence many times when I use word looking for words I can spell and that can result in a lot of wasted time.
Its much quicker to work out what you want to say then tidy up the spelling and grammar on most occasions.
edit: fixed typo's again :) Last edited by Dwyloc on 19-Jul-2008 at 12:45 AM.

| Nice, with Softwood still in limbo this is good news. I heard good things about the Protext/data apps but never got to use them. Last edited by DiscreetFX on 19-Jul-2008 at 12:58 AM. Last edited by DiscreetFX on 19-Jul-2008 at 12:55 AM.

| At one time I also used a free copy of Prodata given away by an Amiga mag - it was actually a good & quite flexible database program, although it felt a little dated (and looked a bit like an MS-DOS port). I imagine that it's memory usage is very very low. _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue...

| I remember these from back in the day, but I never paid much attention...
ProText: is it a text editor or a word processor?
ProData: does it support SQL? |

| I had trouble using ProText in my A1200. I guess it will get worse with my A1. Anyway, it had great reviews at the time, it was considered to be powerful and streamlined. Haven't used ProData, I'm a FinalData guy. ;)
It's great to see these programs become available. No money to be gained from them now, so it's very nice to "return" them to the community. |

| @smithy I doubt that Prodata supports SQL (*). One nice thing was you could easily design input 'forms' for easy data entry.
(* = although I may have simply not noticed such a feature all those years ago, certainly I did not know about SQL until some years later) Last edited by ChrisH on 19-Jul-2008 at 09:15 AM.

| I hope this is good news. I was a regular user of Protext when Arnor went bust, but it stopped working for me when Workbench 3.0 was released. At that time I changed to Wordworth.
It was only when I needed to produce ASCII based documentation that I realised what I had lost. I eventually mastered Golded/Cubic as a replacement, but it is not easy for formatted documentation.
Protext formatting is all done by embedded text strings including font selection. WYSIWYG it is not. However, it does make formatting of text based documents very easy. On the other hand, it does not support lines, diagrams or images... well, only if they are text art.

| Oh Absolutely Brilliant 8).. I got the free Protxt 4, and maybe 5?.. from the coverdisk.. three was like a competition between CU Amiga, and amiga format to see who could carry the latest full version, or best fully useable demo of stuff?.. Great stuff for people who had to spend traffic accident rewards on jutst the machine, and only had pocket money for software.. Games?.. Had to use the Spectrum for that, couldnt aford Amiga games, demo disks only.
Lets see, Ive got Protext for Amiga, And PC.. installed.. runs happily on Windows ME under DOS run, cant rememeber if I used it since I put 3.1 ROMs on the a1200.. or since getting the 1200 for that matter 8(..
I also had Protext, Prodata for the ST, coverdisk.. but gave it with the ST I had when I flogged it at Gamestation.
there were more pieces of software?.. Protext, Prodata, but wasnt there an appropiate spreadsheet?
Pity it wasnt like MiniOffice for C64, BBC, Spectrurm etc, which also came with networking software. 8(
You can do lines and boxes on Protext, select line drawing mode, and it uses DOS character set lines, single, double, and the shades from MS DOS days. Its actually how its interface is constructed. 8)
Hmm.. HTML uses all inline tags for it effects. _________________ The older and more respected a scientist is, the longer it takes to prove him wrong.

| Never heard of it before either, it doesn't look very good though. Looks like a straight MSDOS port (at least from the screenshot i found) But nice that they are giving it away for free.. Last edited by fryguy on 20-Jul-2008 at 03:33 PM.

| Thanks Protext Software, it might have been a better idea to wait until it was actually available for download before posting this news item though. |

| From a story in The Register today, seems This is the latest version available. Scroll down and you'll see it's V6.6
Probably not going to be of much use for many, but might be useful to view how some programs worked "back in the day".
