@alef

"This is another happening to add to the list of issues to talk about in the discussion about valience in computer games and how it affects us."

I think you mean "violence".

While this incident is indeed a serious event, it really isn't made any easier by the translation coming out with lovely translations like this joyous piece:

" I remember the evening only in pictures, the vote was porridge."

Also, it is getting rather tedious these days with everyone trying to lay the blame for their actions squarely at the feet of some video game or another. It is about time they were prosecuted for their actions and not those of a video game character.

Corrected! In fact I was tipped off about that error at IRC before I saw your comment.
Thanks anyway...

Sorry, Steve. Blame mankind for not yet being able to make automatic translations possible...

The google translation is anyway one of the best automatic translations there is...
afaik...

@alef

I'm not having a go at you alef, just that sometimes these automated translations really do make a "pigs ear" of it, confusing the readers even more than they already were!

A majority of the time we can have a reasonable stab at what it should be, but honestly that one defied comprehension

Personally I have used one of 3 different translation tools in the past, and none of them were perfect. One that I used to love I can no longer remember the link to which is annoying, as it offered several choices for words which enabled you to make a better translation - it also supported a lot of languages not found in babelfish or systrans at the time.

Its not that childish to blame the game. if he wouldnt play it i dont think he would do that thing ;) But ofcourse this can be speculated. I also always say to my mom we cant blame the games/videos/magazines.... but still they give us an idea what we can do ;) or like some says... show us the way.

I dont blame media/magazines/videos for my silicone boobs either ;)

I blame Amiga magazines for my Amiga enthusiasm!

Silicon boobs? Ooohh....nasty.

To be serious: I never ever would dare to give a reason like that for doing something illegal; a motive of mixing real life and gaming world aka phantasies.

Who would ever take somebody serious after making such an act in an illusion of being part of a game? What is next? "16 y-o girl raped" Raper: "Err... I was playing Hollywood Strip Poker for the past year, and this girl, I swear it, she looks like the Queen of Hearts...."

What's next?

This actually brings to mind something I learned recently while poking around in IMDB.com. It seems that "The Matrix" was originally PG-13*, for it's first week in the theaters.

And then Colombine happened, an incident where a group of shoolboys went into their high-school loaded down with guns and started shooting students left and right before ultimately killing themselves.

The RIAA immediately RE-rated "The Matrix" to R*, as if blaming the movie for the massacre. So far as I understand it, though, there is no indication that the killers had actually seen the movie***. I might be wrong about that, however.

*PG-13 = Nobody under 13 allowed without a parent or guardian.

** R = Nobody under 18 allowed without a parent or guardian.

*** It had, after all, only been out a WEEK, if even that.

I remember when i used to play Silent Hill 1,2 & 3. I played mostly for 12 hours/day until i get thru them. When my mom tried to make me eat food i just gave her the evil eye. And when i went to eat or go to toilet the real world was transparent. I saw silent hill in front of the real world. Like 50% in photoshop when using "layers". And the evil nurses were after me. I heard voices too transparent.... damnit i was frighetened.

I remember i took of my headphones and turn on the light to not be in the game too much. But then it was boring so i put them back and powered off the light. Scary :)

I heard someone did something crazy in Thailand to a taxi driver or where it was they wanted to stop the game GTA 4. And in USA if im not tottaly wrong when someone killed alot of students.

Well... I gotta admit that after having a few hours fun driving Test Drive, it was a bit easier to push the pedal when driving my car, and the rear look mirror was often much used looking for police cars in uniform or civilian. So I have to say, I feel affected by computer games myself. In one degree or another...

@Kiko

I am not afflicted that way, but one time we took my son and his girlfriend out for supper, not realizing he was sleep deprived due to playing something like EverQuest (back in the day).

He was unable to carry on a conversation. All his references were to things within that game that had inundated him.

We didn't know this. None of it. We literally could not communicate with each other until his girlfriend filled us in after one of us (my wife or me) made some exasperated epithet.

On that particular evening on the way to the restaurant he seemed to have no interest for anything that did not refer back to the game. He kept deflecting the conversation to something going on in "there".
