hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Allegro v1.0 for AmigaOS4 is released.
   posted by Troels on 29-Dec-2008 16:33:58 (6178 reads)
As absolute proof that miracles do happen over Christmas, Hitman/Code HQ does what even he thought was impossible and actually releases Allegro for OS4!

I thought it would be a relatively small project but it turned out to be a terribly complex game library and not small at all. Add to that periods of laziness, busyness, drunkeness, being on holiday, an unhealthy Guitar Hero addiction and the fact that my boss actually makes me work 8 hours a day on non Amiga things, and we have a port that takes 18 months instead of 18 weeks.

But here it is. No MIDI suport yet and small pieces of less used functionality are missing, but it's good enough for a 1.0 release to open the doors for some games to be ported.

On that subject there are 4 release games!

Sword of Fargoal - One of my favourite games on the c64! It was worth porting Allegro just for this one.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Remix - No need to explain this one.

Alex the Allegator 4 - An old skool platformer.

Zombiepox - A bit odd. With brains.

As well as the games, you will need to download the Allegro runtime shared object. For developers who want to port new games you will also need the Allegro SDK.

It's all available now on OS4 Depot in the uploads directory, awaiting the OS4 Depot moderator to give it the ok. Until then you can download it directly from there:

OS4depot.net uploads

EDIT:
They've moved it already Download them here.

A long time ago, I used something like this, called FastGraph but it was for dark ages.

I love rogue like games, but as I never had a C64 I managed to miss Sword of Fargoal so I will look forward to giving it a go as soon as my hardware arrives.

I would guess that it's the Allegro Library.

@Troels

Is your ported Sword of Fargoal accurate? Can I press RUN-STOP-RESTORE and then poke() my way back to the top level?

@ChaosLord

All ports are done by Hitman/Code HQ, but I guess it's not that accurate

Cool. This library now opens the doors for even more software for AmigaOS 4. Nice job. Going to test the release and eventually try to port something. Thank you.

@kicko

haha..

i have ####loads of games waiting on my hd, at home, but when this day finally hits us, i am stuck in a cabin in the northern parts of sweden... :P

no worries though, the fireplace is lit, the beer is cold, life is great.

rest assured, i will unleash a big pile of allegro junk when i get home, and maybe one or two good games as well. hapy new year!

hitman, use the cash for something special! you know what, no, it's not something you can buy in the red light district or in a liqour store. :P

All three games released work fine.

The best of them is Ghost n' Goblins Remix by far, although a bit slow but playable on my SAM.

Good work Hitman.

They have moved the files out of Uploads already. I added the correct links to the new item.
