Software News   Software News : Gimp 2.2.13 alpha and Fontforge 20061220 for AmiCygnix released
   posted by CygnusEd on 7-Jan-2009 15:35:03 (4292 reads)
Gimp is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. This is another alpha release of Gimp 2. Like in the last version, the plug-ins are missing, so you can only load and save pictures in XCF format. Also some filters are missing because of this. In spite of this, the program has a lot of image processing features.

Fontforge is an outline font editor that lets you create your own postscript, truetype, opentype, cid-keyed, multi-master, cff, svg and bitmap (bdf, FON, NFNT) fonts, or edit existing ones. Also lets you convert one format to another. FontForge has support for many Macintosh font formats. (Read more!)

Its very cool to have GIMP even without the plugin, which I hope will follow in a not to distant future release.

With each additional AmiCygnix application ported dual booting linux gets less nessary to be able to get real work done on a SAM440 or AmigaOne without requiring access to a second PC.

Yes true...

1) Is there a list of ports?
2) Prioritized list, needed vs wanted? time it would take? dependencies? all these columns.
3) Perhaps a how-to-port to AmiCygnix guide?
4) FAQ & Common porting difficulties
etc...

You rock, seriously. You've pumped out an amazing number of X based ports. Thank you, sincerely.

Do you have a paypal account that can accept donations?

I want to introduce here the new AmiCygnix forum on www.amigans.net! Please post all questions and requests there

At the moment it is not possible for others to make AmiCygnix ports. The AmiCygnix SDK ist not published yet. The complete sources are available at OS4-depot, but I think this is no option.

Thats verry great Allways think that a list of port or even, an amiga users poll for amicygnyx software ports, will be usefull and interesting...

Will soon start to use a SAM and will discover what is and how great is AmiCygnix

Wow! I love Gimp on the Mac and think it's great there's now an Amiga version! With JPEG support this would be a killer app.

I love TypeSmith on my miggy.
Is FontForge better than TypeSmith?

@ChaosLord

Fontforge is much more powerfull than Typesmith. But it is not easy to understand, if you want to use all features.

I was a Typesmith fan, but :

It doesn't work on AOS 4.x
The fonts created with it don't work anymore with Pagestream 5 (!!!) but they still work with the OS and other applications (why?). If you load them into Fontforge and save them again, they start working with Pgs 5.

Also on Win they work with the OS but not with Pgs 5, but after FontForge they work again. Mystery

Anyway, I find the new AbiWord amazing, but still very slow on SAM. Usable on the A1 (but not with very big documents)

@lucaricossa

Typesmith 2.5b works fine on my AmigaOneXE OS4.1 system. I had to fiddle with 68k compatibility and screen prefs in the prefs drawer in order to get it to work. With that being said, Typesmith has not been updated since ~1997-98. FontForge is the better product and is free.

At first thanks for the work!
I'm a real Gimp fan and looked forward for testing this version on my Sam.

But after the install I'm sobered again. It's nearly unusable slow. Altought I painted a simple black line on a 640x480 white field the pen is like in ghost mode (the result of my mouse input noticeable lags).
Is it bcoz of the alpha port or general of the slow environment? Gimp was more usable on my old 466MHz Celeron with less memory (under Linux & Win'98). :/

greetz, DaFreak

@DaFreak

Alpha means, that there are no plugins and modules available.

Made your test here on my AOne and the speed is not much slower than on ArtEffect.

How fast are the other applications? How long (for example) does it need to launch AmiCygnix in standard configuration?
