Software News   Software News : OWB 3.5 with tabs for AmigaOS
posted by ssolie on 30-Jan-2009 21:59:13 (5063 reads)
Grab the latest OWB 3.5 and enjoy some modern web browsing on your Amiga. It already works great with Google maps for example.

Read more for details...

3.5 (30.1.2009)
- Updated to SVN revision 819.
- Added support for double and triple clicks.
- The page title, status bar, javascript requester and context menu
texts are converted to the local charset now.
- When opening a window the screen is put to front now.
- Added CONTEXTMENURMB tooltype.
- Fixed problems with the popup menus if more than one window is open.
- Implemented closing windows from javascript.
- Windows opened from javascript can set the window position and size
now.
- Implemented javascript prompt requester.
- Fixed "stop" context menu item.
- Implemented copying images to the clipboard.
- Implemented saving and loading searches (input type="search").
- Added workarounds in the AmigaOS 4.x keyboard event handling to match
other platforms, for example Facebook chat and Google suggest work
now.
- ARexx commands are executed for the last opened window instead of the
first one now.
- Implemented support for tabs, to use tabs instead of windows the
tooltype TABS has to be enabled.
- Added support for a different start page, tooltype STARTPAGE, if you
want to use a different page on startup than the home page. Use
STARTPAGE=about :blank for an empty page.
- Implemented text shadow.

And best of all, no bounties were required!

And no hamsters, or other animal beings, were hurt, injured, or decapitated during production. Right?

Um, Im getting very worried indeed about this.

After all, once OWB fully supports JavaScript, which by definition is about as secure as Windows, would leead to write once, screw everyone code hack, no matter your hardware, machine, OS or site accessed? 8(

Please, at the very least, can we have an Amiga like Kill button for scripts.. Also, If Javascript can open, close, move etc windows, whats to stop the Spam, as usual, doing whatever they want with your system?

Dont forget ANSI Escaped code buffer stuffing as well please.. Creating a list of Escape codes that represent ASCII chraracters, and which are then translated the next level for misdirection etc.

Just limit in site URL calls to that site, or at least the viewable option please? But most of all, Please, implement the OK Cancel requestors for teh scriopt, with some form of memory for rememerbing the script per site, so that you can allow a clear script to run on a site, but the later hacked variation will show up.

If people complain about this.. Um, why are you using Javascript as a replacement OS?

Sorry.. Its an amazing piece of work, but being forced along by people who just want it to be the same as everything else, without stopping to realise that everyone jumping of a cliff is doing the same thing as well 8(

The refreshing of the already loaded contents when I switch between more than 2 tabs is slow. Anyone with the same delays?

@ferrels

AROS version is due for release sometime between now and 1st of march. Different authors though.

AROS OWB screenshot (tabs)
AROS OWB screenshot (download manager)

In regards to the "best of all, no bounties where required" comment, since when is it a bad thing to encourage people with a few $$ for thier efforts ?

@ RodTerl

Yes, lets completely avoid complying with industy standards. Who needs to use the internet anyway ? Make sure you stop using IBrowse and Aweb too (both of which have partial javascript support). HTML, bah who needs it, its way too conformist. In fact come to think of a tcp/ip stack is way too industry standard, lets avoid them too.
And yes, the above is blatant sarcasm.
Also, btw,... wtf,.. javascript definately !=an OS.

@RodTerl
Hasn't IBrowse "fully supported JavaScript" for years, without causing any Amiga users any problems with viruses/spyware? So why would OWB be any different?

OTOH, I agree that allowing Javascript to resize windows is BAD, and there needs to be an option to disable that (this is the default in IBrowse).

It would also be nice if OWB supported IBrowse's ad-blocking standard (which is a simple text file).

Ok, that works now !

Where did you find this information ? Is there a guide anywhere, I cant find anything in yje supplied text file. Or am I blind ?

edit: Ok, sorry abou that, didn't read the new feature list very well, it's all in there......

And yes, OWB is getting better and better ! I still miss several features Ibrowse has though. Lets see what IB3 brings us, and how far OWB will go.

Thanks

Mart
