Software News   Software News : VmwAROS distribution now called Icaros Desktop
posted by paolone on 14-Mar-2009 10:25:15 (3714 reads)
The most popular AROS pre-configured desktop environment, formerly known as "VmwAROS Live!", has changed its name to "Icaros Desktop", in order to avoid wrong interpretations and confusion with VMware-oriented products. Icaros Desktop is a complete, independent AROS distribution which runs on supported PC hardware, being it physical or virtualized. The AROS Research Operating System is a open source lightweight, efficient and flexible desktop operating system, aiming at being compatible with AmigaOS 3.1 at the API level, while improving on it in many areas.

More about this at the official website: www.icarosdesktop.org

Former address, www.vmwaros.org, will continue working until expiration. Icaros Desktop will be as much compatible as it can with former distribution. At the moment, there is still no plan for a VE (virtual environment for VMware) version.

The other think which make me smile, when authors of some software write in history somethink like "changes svn number from ... to ...". Like its big deal or big changes :)

I just mean that names are not so matter. Vmaros good too (was). And also better never change name (need think for first about), becouse ppls will remember old one.

And why Icaros Desktop use VmwAROS 5 instead of last version the 6 where you can use the USB ports?

Great name! Is it because AROS falls from the heavens and crashes so often?
No but seriously, AROS is getting more and more usable day by day, and I really appreciate this fine distribution.

I've changed the name because I'm sick of explaining dozens of times that 'VmwAROS doesn't mean AROS for VMware'. Really.

I had a loooong discussion last time on amiga.org, which left me still reluctant about chaning name. But then, some days after, I looked at a video made by an AROS user, which has followed AROS for many many months and... he had described VmwAROS as a distribution for VMware, too! I couldn't believe it. Really.

Changing name urged. As I am to release a new version soon, I thought that this was the right time to change it. There were some motivations "to go Icaros": first of all, myth of Icarus well depicts the whole Amiga history, and from a philosophical POV I love people that tries to leverage: VmwAROS has been a way to leverage the AROS experience to a better level. And third, yes, there is also a bit of hirony in this choice: Icarus crashed hard, and AROS does this many times. But, luckily, it's already happening lesser and lesser at every release, which is good.

Ahaa, well in that case Icaros is actually the "Immortal ghost of Icaros".

PS. I like the name.
