Hardware News   Hardware News : Individual Computers: New Indivision models, A600 expansion, Chameleon delayed
   posted by Wiesel on 28-Mar-2009 12:28:23 (8842 reads)
As announced in january of this year, delivery of our flickerfixer "Indivision AGA" for the Amiga 4000 (desktop version) and the CD32 has begun this week. In order to start sales worldwide at the same time, we have shipped a few units a little earlier to our partners in the USA. The first customers in the US and Germany have already recieved their pre-ordered board. Delivery to customers in Sweden and England starts today.

Indivision AGA brings the Amiga's graphics output to a modern monitor or flat screen. The user can choose almost any model on the market, because Indivision AGA doesn't only double the frame rate, but even displays a PAL screenmode at more than 60Hz flicker-free. For every screenmode, the full colour depth of 24 bits is displayed.

Indivision AGA is available from our resellers for 129,- EUR(*). We're especially happy to have a new partner in Switzerland. Relec Hardware and Software delivers both versions of Indivision AGA with a French manual.

Indivision ECS under development
The next version of our popular flickerfixer will be made for Amiga models with OCS- and ECS-chipset. Since the older chipsets only work with a colour depth of 12 bits (4096 colours), we're expecting a slightly lower price for this model. It is meant to work with the Amiga models A500, A600(**), A1000, A2000 and A3000. All known technical data will presumably be in Indivision ECS: All screenmodes will be output with more than 60Hz, and the S-Hires modes of the ECS chipset will be displayed in full resolution. Indivision ECS will be installed on the socket of the Denise chip of the target computer. We're expecting the first prototype in about three months.

New memory expansion A603 for A600
In 2006, we already introduced a memory expansion for the smallest of all Amigas, the A600. To our surprise, the demand for this expansion is still high, so we didn't just make a new production run, but made a further development. The new expansion offers 1M of additional chipmem, a real-time clock and a clockport for connection of A1200 expansions. In addition to that, the A603 offers a socket for installing Indivision ECS. The new memory expansion will be available from our resellers before the end of april 2009 for 39,90 EUR(*). For operation of the real-time clock, a coin cell (type CR2032) is required, which is not included. Installing the expansion requires mechanical work on the metal shield of the computer.

Chameleon delayed
The new multi-functional cartridge for the C64 with flickerfixer, memory expansion, floppy-emulation, freezer- and turbo-functionality has experienced multiple changes during recent development that have delayed mass-production. In addition to that, several semiconductor vendors have disappointed us with extremely long delivery times, so we had to make more changes in order to keep quick mass-production possible.
Development of Chameleon is our top priority at the moment and it does not depend on chip delivery times any more. If you want to test Chameleon before it's release, you can do that with the C-One. A Chameleon core is available for free download.
(*) recommended retail price including German sales tax of 19%. Prices at our retail partners may vary. For mail ordering, shipping may be added.
(**) memory expansion A603 required.

Which A1200 expansions can be fitted to the A603?

btw I used to have an A600 and I really liked how much I could do on what was, by then, a very minimal system.

@peroxidechicken

Best guess: anything that fits mechanically (or works with a cable) and has a driver that probes $D80001+offset.

This is all great news. This means A600 owners will be able to use the Subway USB card, and plug in a USB numeric keypad to complete their keyboards!!!

I'd love to know if there would be room left inside the A600 once adding both the A603 and the Indivision ECS for an 8MB Fast RAM expansion card (the ones from Russia that Zetr0 is building). I'd love a 10MB A600 with a rock solid VGA display, OS3.1, USB mouse and joypad (for Workbench and system-friendly games).

Now all we need is an Ethernet card for the clockport, so we can all go online with a full 8MB Fast RAM (if we have it), and not having to use the PCMCIA port which limits the Fast RAM to 4 or 5.5MB.

And an 8MB Fast RAM+RTC+Clockport+IDE/CF for the CD32 so we can turn those into funky little internet terminals.

Am I dreaming?

If USB is a possibility then there's always USB->Ethernet adaptors but that's probably not the best way to go about doing things...

I know the A603 makes adding more memory possible but is it really going to be Fast-RAM? I always thought the A500 fast memory and hard drive interface add-ons that pluged in between the cpu socket and the cpu were a nice, direct way of doing things... Too bad it's not quite so easy on an A600.

It's chip ram as mentioned in the news item. The Russian ram card is the type that clips over the CPU. A few years ago Jens showed an an 68030 card for the A600 which could be secured with screws, was PCMCIA friendly and could hold upto 128MB.

While I'm excited about these add on's (which are quite cool), I'm a bit apprehensive about them relying on old aging hardware. I just spent $85 nzd on an A600 repair, and now its developed another fault. That's why I'm looking forward to the Clone-A. No age related problems, and I'm hoping that Jens will build in cool stuff too like flicker fixers.

@Rebel-CD32

Does the Subway not work with the existing A600 clockport adapter?

peroxidechicken, at the moment USB-Ethernet isn't usable because no 68000 USB stack supports them yet. Poseidon won't run on an A600, but Anaiis will, but so fair Anaiis only supports USB mice, keyboards, printers and some joysticks.

Trev, I'm sure the Subway will work with any existing clockport expansions as well. I haven't seen any of those in stock anywhere for a while, so it's good to have a new expansion that offers a clockport as well as a real-time clock, extra Chip RAM and an expansion for the Indivision.

Apart from the Subway (which is in stock and available) you can also use a Hypercom High Speed Serial interface, which could be used to network through Miami to a computer connected to the net, although you would get dialup-like speeds on it. They're still in stock at AmigaKit.

The Delfina Flipper Edition sound card is available at Vesalia, this will probably work too. I hope stocks of these don't run out too fast, I wouldn't mind one myself when I can afford it.

It would be interesting if anyone knows of any other clockport expansions that are still available.

I know A500 clockport expansions are still out there. A quick note to Jens might reveal which vendors still have A600 expansions available.

I have an RRNet on my A500 clockport. Much more fun than USB.

If you wish to use the separate forthcoming product, Indivision ECS on your Amiga 600, you will need the A603 Memory Expansion first to connect it to the A600.

@Trev

Since Jens just finished this new A603 with a clockport on it, I don't see why he'd go out of his way to find out if anyone still stocks an older model. Where can I get Miami or AmiTCP drivers for the RRNet?

AmigaKit, as soon as I have saved up some money I'll be getting that A603!

@Cammy

I think he would. Jens is a helpful guy, and those older products need to leave the supply chain before vendors start pulling in newer ones.

Re: RRNet you can write one yourself or wait for me to share mine. I've been rather code shy lately. Regardless, unless you've got a heavily expanded A500, you're not going to be running Miami or AmiTCP and its derivatives. I use uIP for local hacking--nothing very useful, just fun.

On an unexpanded or lightly expanded A600 or A1200, you're better off with a PCMCIA NIC.

@Trev

We originally funded the production run of the A602 in 2006 after putting in a request for the product.

The A602 finally sold out completely in 2008 and this led to us approaching Individual Computers once again for another production run, The result is the A603

Ah. I suppose the original Gayle snap-on clockport adapter has been out of production and out of stock for quite some time then.

The Gayle-adapter with the Silversurfer clockport is still in stock, but it's really only usable with the Silversurfer and Subway (if you have an accelerator) because of a different register layout.

The clockport on A602 (the 2006 version) and A603 are software-compatible with the A1200's clockport, so most drivers don't need to be patched.
