Software News   Software News : Icaros Desktop 1.1.1 update has been released
posted by paolone on 30-Apr-2009 0:02:11 (3461 reads)
Exactly a month after Icaros Desktop 1.1 main release, it's time for a little update. This newer version provides the latest system files, including the newer ata.device from Neil Cafferkey, which fixes many incompatibility issues and should help people who couldn't try AROS before, to boot it on their computers. This new releases includes also an improved version of the OWB browser and fixes some system issues encountered with the 1.1 release. For this reason, v1.1.1 is available in two versions: an update CD for Icaros Desktop 1.1 users and a complete full live! DVD for new users.

A complete list of new features and improvements is available at this page.

Ok, so those that had trouble to boot the earlier Icaros desktop could get lucky
with this version since it contains a lot of changes to the ata.device.
Thanks for the update Paolone and devs.

I didn't have trouble booting the last release but I will certainly give this update a go. Maybe it might help with the problem I'm having with my Soundblaster...
Keep up the good work Paolone and everyone involved. Thanks!

The first call to OWB is slow because it has to write its own configuration files. If you run it from DVD, it will be painfully slow because it can't do that. OWB is also a big executable, so depending on your configuration (use or not of DMA transfers) speed can be really different.

On my system, OWB starts in about 4 seconds and open pages at the speed my ADSL allows.

According to its guide...

Quote:
WiiLoader is a small utility to load .dol and .elf-files over network to the Homebrew Channel.
on a 'patched' Nintendo Wii-console.
This is handy becuase you don't need to take out and copy applications to the SD-card and
then insert it in the Wii again to be able to start an application.

Just select the file and press send, and voila! the application is started =)

Cool, my Wii has the Homebrew Channel installed. What app needs to be running Wii-side?

On my SATA drive, and AMD 6000+ OWB starts in under 1 sec..

One thing that will speed up owb, is font cache. We will have that soon I hope.

Also SDL might be little slow, but that will change in the future. Mabye use of cairo.lib will speed things up.

Rem.. OWB only been for AROS couple or months, and already very stable. Latest version never crashed my mashine. Rem.. to install mstruetypefonts in fonts/truetype (only ttf files) then OWB will be even nicer.
