Hardware News   Hardware News : New Sam440ep-flex at 733 Mhz
   posted by elwood on 24-Jun-2009 21:45:44 (22586 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, 24-Jun-2009

ACube Systems is pleased to announce a new change in its Sam440ep-Flex product line: the new Sam440ep-Flex board running at 733 Mhz that replaces the 800Mhz version (now out of production). This one has a RAM clock running at 147 Mhz, instead of 133 Mhz of the Flex 667.

The suggested price for this Flex 733 is 410 euros (excluding VAT and shipping).

Ok, if i am wrong about the 733Mhz SAM440ep-Flex, then i deeply appologize. Still i think this seems to be better than just updating the CPU-speed, having now both the CPU and the memory bus faster.

@olegil

First of all I think its cool that more hardware is coming out, and that more users get to experience AmigaOS4.1, but at the same time I kind of agree whit Crumb about this, I already have a fixed 1Ghz G4, AmigaONE-XE, there is no point for me to buy a slower computer.

I think there are few that are same position, that are looking for a upgrade.
Hans has worked on newer graphic card drivers, that work becomes some what useless, if PCIe is not supported some time in the future.

Yes it's great to see new HW, let's not forget that before the SAM you couldn't buy anything (new) that would run OS4.

For all of you A1/Peg owners.....I'm sure ACUBE will sooner or later bring out something that you could consider an upgrade.

i relly dont like how things is running in amiga town... in the old days there was a time line or a preview with stuff not like this no news and then no news and then sudanli something turns up out of the blue sky.... there could aleast tell us some plans about the futuher for hardware. i remember the old days when hardware was annoucne then pepole could save up to things now, things before evey one knows it and then disapair igen... i world relly like iff acube told us iff ther got any plans for high-end hardware insted off treating us like this.. come and buy our stuff... whot kind of hardware and whot price range... maby there are thinking iff ther realese any plans ther wont sell any sams

One of not many logical posts.

Personally I was going to buy Sam440ep, I was 100% sure... until, after waiting, and waiting... I got idea that I'm buying stuff which won't even play DVD. I'm kind of tired off looking how fast I can move window "full of icons".

I sold most of my Amiga classic stuff, and I'm truly free from "hardware" attachment. What a freedom!

Amiga OS could be a good operating system... but there is no ANY organization of this what is happening with system, software, hardware and people expectations.

What is real difference between 677, 733, 800? 5%

And what SOFTWARE will use this AMAZING kick in speed?

People get life.

@billt:

Just in case you were unaware, the PowerPC market may seem dead to you, but then please explain to me Why sony uses it? OctaCORE, thats eight core power ppc unit in thier PlayStation 3 console.

why cant we have that as a desktop CPU? It would kick ####.

@Gebrochen

The PS3 uses a Cell processor, which has one PowerPC code, and (up to) eight SPEs. It's not an eight core PowerPC machine.

As far as the PowerPC market goes, we're at the mercy of what gaming consoles and the embedded markets want. If either of these markets want /need multi-core PowerPC processors, then there will be multi-core processors. The same goes for altivec, or any other feature.

Hans

@Kreciu

I decided not to post my big posting yet, until the question below is answered, just in case I am seeing it wrong with your two comments.

May I ask, what OS are you using at the momet, if not Amiga anymore?

@ALL
I have been setting up and manually checking costs for an ecommerce store with various products and services. So I have manually checked the international import and export scene in regards to electronic items and software services.

After re-checking supply and demand and the actual end costs of unit-by-unit production, order fulfillment and the logistics of dispatching and shipping to customer. I have to HONESTLY admit wow, ACube is really competitive. For anybody the wants to believe items can be sold for $250 RRP just because they think so, or because they heard a rumor. Think 10x again. Its because people make assumptions without manually checking things with a fine tooth comb that causes business to file for bankruptcy and therefore lay off thousands of workers / staff.

For yields, PS3's CELL has 7 SPEs.

Is this meant to be serious?
They are pleased to announce a downgrade?

@hammer,

take it easy, so I am human and make a mistake by thinking it was eight core.

None the less, the PS3 and its games, clearly indicates how nice it would be if Amiga would have this and a mobo board to place os4.x onto.

AND

Acube is doing a great job, hopefully medium hardware is around the corner.

No you misread..

They are pleased to announce a replacement for the "hard-to-get" 800Mhz SAM-Flex.
Seems finding 667Mhz CPU's that work reliably in 800Mhz is really hard.
As Max wrote, the slight speed decrease is evened out with the increased memory bus
speed in most cases. Except pure CPU calculations of course.

Let's say about 8 times the performance of the SAM, at 5 times the price

What "we" need is affordable HW with decent performace. The Peg2-G4 was sold for 500Euro, the G3 for as lttle as 300, thats including VAT and 5 years ago. And don't give me the "they were sold at a loss"-BS. Any new HW has to compare to these AND take into account that we're 5 years down the line. The SAM won't even beat the G3 for CPU-performance (it might do on memory-extensive tasks), but costs more than the G4.

A (used) Mac-Mini@1.5GHz can be had starting somewhere around 300Euro, and that including case, HD, DVD-RW and RAM. It will literally run circles around the SAM and the reliabilty is most likely far better than the SAM.

ohh yes!!! And i can get a used VW Phaeton for 20.000 euros (new cost +160.000 euros).You are comparing apples an oranges.You cannot compare NEW AVALIABLE hardware with SECOND HAND OLD UNAVALIABLE hardware

@Fransexy

a) used Macs are available. Actually it's much easier to get one than a SAM.
b) Why not ? If a new car is worse in every aspect than another (used) car, there is no point in buying the new one.

If PPC-Minis or Peg-G4s would be available today at the same prices as they were all those years ago, they would still smoke the SAM in every aspect.

are we worse today than yesterday? well... YES... not just yesterday but 5 years ago you could buy G4 machines that still run rings around these "new" boards.
if development was focused on Mac Mini G4 instead of fixing bugs of underpowered obscure embedded boards there wouldn't be short supply problems because millions of Mac Mini G4 were produced.

If it was so wonderful and cheap, i wonder why everybody in the world doesn't have a Peg under his desk, it really escapes me, uh?
Just ask who decided to discontinue it, which is not Acube's fault i suppose.

Anyhow, i really feel the need to do my public address now: i have a couple of Nintendo GameCubes and an Apple Bandai Pippin and both use PowerPC processors: you MUST port AOS4 to them!! Especially the GC is widely available and can be bought for under 40 Euros, damn you Hyperion!!!!!!
