Software News   Software News : LookHere 2.0 available
posted by Allanon on 22-Jan-2010 18:33:23 (3216 reads)
Ok, the time is come for a new version of LookHere :D
Too many bug fixes and improvements to list them all, but here is a brief list of the most important features.

With the release of Hollywood 4.5 LookHere has got many new features like the multi window, now, pressing the buttons in the Main Bar will opens standalone windows instead of using the same window.

Another big feature is the Drag'n'Drop support: now you can drop files or drawers in the main bar instead of using the Load Drawer requester.

Now LookHere use a cache system to improve the speed of the thumbnails reading.

A new window called Manager has been added to LookHere, here you can Move, Copy or Delete your images easily, it's very simple at this stage but I hope it will be usefull.

I've included in this version a preferences window where you can set many parameters, you can also change the image cache location if you are not happy with the default one.

ScuiLib has been improved too (but I cannot release it yet, sorry), infact LookHere is delivered with two themes, the default one is like the default OS4 look and another one is called "Dark".

Have fun!

Nice, interesting, but something wrong with keys-handling (tested os4 and win32 versions, the same for all). ESC just almost does not works. You press it, hold it, press it fast many times, and only one time (if you lucky) it works.

Let's test: just run (on os4), open drawer, scan a bit, press ESC - nothing. Still scanning. Press esc one more time, still scanning. Press esc many times like mankey - then stop is happenes (at last :) ). Then i press on "viewer button". Image open, all ok. Trying to press "space" - nothing. Just does not works. Press left-right - not works. Press + - for zoom - not works. Then i press "play" in viewer button, it give me help window, where i can read that "space" and "left/right" must works, and press "esc" for exit from the help window. Ok, i press ESC - help window still here, ESC just does not works. One more time, again, again, faster, faster - nothing. The i press and hold and still nothing. By some luck , i can exit from that help window (whyle in background images are changes). Then i press SPACE - nothing. Left/right - not works.

So, the verdit for the moment - programm interesting, have potencial, nice to play, but keys handling must be improved 100%. And that "HOLD" esc for something are very annoy, ESC must works just at time. You press it, and it works. The same for all the other keys.

Anyway, thanks for.

PS. Can't found in options can i disable that visual-change effects of pictures or not .. Because whyle they looks nice, will be cool to have ability to swithit of, to just plain-fast change. Some effects are madness-slow (up for 5-7 seconds, and that on 1ghz of cpu, so how it will be for SAM's users ? unreal). You need (imho) add just "plain-fast change" options.

PS2. Found one more bug just without trying to found it. Run LookHere (you will have that buttons window), and press Left or Right (cursor keys), and you will have:

HollywoodPlayer:
Table field "Display" was not initialized!
File: ScuiLib_7(038).hws (current line: 3670 - In fucntion: handleobject)

What make me think, that keys-handling implement pretty wrong in programm itself. Imho you need have a look on it for sure.

PS3. "Play" button in the Viewer Window looks pretty unlogical, because as i can see, it's "SlideShow", so you better (imho of course) rename it to SlideShow. If it's not for slideshow, then something wrong. Anyway i see no reassons to have "play" button in viewer window. Because if user press "viewer" then he of course want to see pictures and just press space/left/right for navigate over the images.

PS4. Thumbnails window by default in full-screen mode. Will be cool if it can be window mode by default (by the same logica as with other windowses), and just by the same logica as for other windowses - "full-screen" button if user in interst of it.

Ok, first of all the ESC problem during scanning...

If you tell LookHere! to scan an entire partition the program will receive the ESC key only when the directory is changed, for example say that you want to scan the drawer "Work:" and it contains the following drawers:
- Images
- Music
- Games
and so on...
If you press ESC while the program is scanning the drawer the scanning will be interrupted only when the Images drawer is finished, so be patient and keep the ESC key down :) I've tested on Windows Vista and OS4.1 on SAM440ep and it just works.

I can change this behaviour if required, but instead polling the keyboard continuosly I've thought to optimize in this way this loop.

The same is for the Viewer window, the key should works, I've tested on my systems without problems... During a transition the keyboard is not checked so the ESC key must pressed until is detected: be sure that the Viewer window is acitve because if the window help is active the ESC key will not be recognized.

Quote:
Then i press on "viewer button". Image open, all ok. Trying to press "space" - nothing. Just does not works. Press left-right - not works. Press + - for zoom - not works.

The keyboard is not supported at this stage, please use the gadgets instead.
Zoom feature is not supported but planned (have you read the docs? )

As said before please check that the active window is the Viewer window, if you want you can turn off the help window in the preferences.

Please read the docs, you can disable the FX in the Viewer window with the [FX] switch and in the Slide Show with the F key.

Ok, because I've not disabled completly the keyboard handling in my GUI Lib, I'll release a fixed version, in the meantime don't use the keyboard keys in this window (Main Bar)

I've chosen this way because you have the maximum space available for the thumbnail matrix, I think it's pretty useless a thumbnail mode in a window where you can see few pictures because of the window size... I'm not sure about your request...

Anyway thank you for your notes these will be usefull for sure to make LookHere better, I'll check better the ESC key to react more quickly.

Next time you will be my betatester man

@Allanon
No probs :) Just write me when you need beta-testing help :) Why i write it like so big post, just to show that end-user in all the case will not read docs. And better just make everything logical from the first look. For example if window must be "active" for something, then, it must be "auto-acitive" when user choice first time it, or, it must change the borders (to show user which one are active, and which are not).

I will test it more deeply again tommorow, but as far as i remember i trying many ways and still these problems was occurs ..

Imho, what is most important in such programms, it's navigation of images. If user press "viewer", then, these space/left/right are must for navigate beetwen (imho).

Yep, thanks, my bad :)

I'll rename it but it's usefull for people who like to run the Slide Show in windowed mode.

As i can see , you already have "slideshow" button in the main button panel. Imho there already everything related to slideshow, and slideshow in viewer mode imho a bit unecessary in that case ? It's like twice the same action (user can drive in mess:) ) anyway, if it's need it viewer mode too, then rename it plz to slideshow, that "play" a bit confuse) :)

For example for me, window mode for thumbnails will be very good by default + the same button as in other parts for the full screen. Because when you set fullscreen by default, it's close all the workbench, but i just want to see thums and write in OWB some posts. Anyway it's always good to give user choice - window or full screen. For window just the same 64x64 thums will looks very nice + pictures can be scalled to that window size with no probms + fullscreen button for do all what it's done now :)

Anyway, nice programms, hope it will mature enough, and will wait your mail for deep betatesting :)

Ok,
I've corrected the keyboard bug, sorry, my fault.
Now the app has a keyboard shortcut for every button and you can also move from one gadget to another using the keyboard.

I'm still working to correct the ESC behaviour...

For the next week I hope to release a fixed version.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Greets,
Allanon

Hi Kicko,
where is the problem? too much mem required or slowness of the effects? Are you running LookHere on a classic system?
I've tried a fixed version on my Sam440ep and runs fine, the heavy transitions has been removed if you select "Use only light effects", this feature did not work well in the previous version.

hehehe I think the X1000 will come to my home too
