I imagine x1000 will have the power to run every x86 OS, so that problematic documents can be converted to OpenOffice.

I have ran Word2 on PCTask on my A4k/060 to open .doc files and convert them to .rtf, to be further processed with FinalWriter.

PCTask is now freeware, IIRC. So it should be usable on any 68k compatible, like on AOS4 boxes.
But PC task runs only up to Win95 of windows, so MS Office97 might be about the newest one that can be ran with it.

Other options are:
- run 486 compatible linux distribution on PC Task and use OpenOffice to convert files
- run Bochs on AOS4 to run more modern x86 OS + office
(Bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro or AMD64 CPU, including optional MMX, SSE, SSE2 and 3DNow! instructions. Bochs is capable of running most Operating Systems inside the emulation including Linux, DOS, Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000/XP.)
- use some document conversion tool in x86 emulation (PCtask, Bochs or DOSBOX)
- use office in Macintosh emulation to convert those files
- use AOS4 native document conversion tool (some exist)
- use some linux tool via cygnix
- etc...

Forget Bochs (too slow even on Core 2...). Best solution would be QEMU: PA6T could emulate Pentium class CPU - enough for Windows 95/98.

If one needs very (very very) rarely convert documents, it can be done also in a slow emulation.
(MS word2 was very very slow also on my A4000, but with executive's help it did not cause any delays on AOS side)

You should have used Word for Mac on Shapeshifter. It would have been much, much faster than using PCTask.

Talk about making more work for yourself than necessary :D

i tryed Open Office 3.1.1 on Ubuntu..and i have to say that "lite" version is very very very very lite.
A lot of features miss it that have open office and abiword.

no PDF save support :(

But it's a smaller challenge than full OO, and presumably, once OO4kids has been ported, most of that porting effort can be reused to get a good start on a port of the full OO version.

Hm... I just had a quick look at OO4kids (Version 0.9) on my WinXP. Looks really good ! What is missing ? Maybe an adittional Adressbook app, but you should be able to link addresses to OO4kids somehow... maybe an Arexx Port ?

It also got support for simple drawings, which I was missing in AbiWord e.g...

I cannot think of anything I would need additionally, but feel free to proof me wrong....

Well I suppose only mad AmigaN's would be doing a thing like this now adays, so more power to you trev.

Open office is very good news, the only other thing I would like to see is java and maybe flash. But small step, every step we take is a step forward and not a step back like Amiga Inc was taken us.

Wouldn't it be easier/preferable to port classic Amiga programs like TurboCalc, FinalWriter, Wordsworth, etc to OS4 PPC and update features, rather than embark on an OpenOffice port?

I know you would need to get source code first, but it must be possible to track down original developers of programs like FinalWriter and persuade them to release code under an open source public license?

I've not tried OpenOffice Lite/Kids but sounds like a smart move, presumably features of full software can be added over time anyway.

I tried oo4kids 0.9 and it is not bad. Fast, loads my documents without problems and supports footnotes - do we need more?

I need the equation editor, cross-referencing, and a citation manager for the kind of work that I do. I was happy that MS Word finally got its own citation/reference manager in version 2007. I have no idea if oo4kids supports those as I have yet to try it.

One step at a time though.
