Announcement   Announcement : Icaros Desktop 1.2.3 has been released!
posted by paolone on 6-Jul-2010 21:55:58 (5377 reads)
Great news for AROS folks and Amiga followers in general: the latest update of Icaros Desktop adds some new fancy features like playing videos from YouTube, and a more reliable 3D/2D graphic support for most Nvidia cards (from GeForce FX to GTX200, with various degree of compatibility and support). This new release adds also some new applications, like the music editor BigBand or the vector-graphic program AmiFig, just ported to AROS by Yannick Erb, or the desktop-grabbing tool Screenrecorder, while many other applications have been updated to the latest version. Icaros Desktop 1.2.3 is available in two formats: the complete Live! edition and the usual update-CD which must be installed over a pre-existing 1.2.2 installation with Icaros LiveUpdater. @Kicko

If I get a chance and can get away with it I may take a stick into PCworld and try some out.

Although to be fair if people are ordering from a shop then they could get an Icaros stick and test it on the ones they want.

This is great news! Still waiting to find a cheap note/net book to run AROS on it

I LOVE my Acer Aspire 150 netbook (I call it my Aros Aspire). I have it duel boot with Win XP and Aros with a 2 gig Win2Aros drive so I can swap data when I need to. The rest (it's 160gb drive) is split between Win and Aros. Aros is so much faster than Windows it's ridiculous. Once WiFi is released I'll probably never use the Win side of it.

One of my favorite sites is DeviantArt.com and OWB runs it perfectly (it's almost all java so I was worried). I was also worried that the battery would just quit because we don't have an on screen indicator however, the Aspire has a light that flashes when the battery is running low so that's all I need. I haven't tried YouTube yet but with the new software I'm sure it's fine also. I did the update from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3 last night by pointing the updater to the ISO I downloaded and it went flawlessly.

Aros really feels like an Amiga and that's what I was looking for. I showed it to a friend here at work (another Amiga guy) and he was flipping out over it and is now looking into putting some hardware together to run Aros.

My wife calls the Amiga the Amoeba because I sit in front of it for so long.

The perfect combination is the Aspire One + AROS + one of those nice wireless mice from Logitech: unluckily the right key of the touchpad is not so comfortable to use wit AmigaOS interface.

Aros on the Acer Aspire is awesome and I truly believe that once the wifi is available nobody could deny it is the mobile Amiga.

All in all: 1) it comes from the company that owns many Amiga technology patents; 2) its name is A150, with that lovely "A" prefix; and 3) if you have the white shell one, you can place it side-by-side to an A1200 and you would spot some kind of continuity... :D :D :D

(for the most upset ones: I am not serious. However...).

I completely agree, if only they'd put both mouse buttons above or below the touch-pad..

As I'm fairly new to AROS, is there a way to assign right-click mouse presses to a keyboard combination?

By the way, keep on with the good work Paolone!

Cheers,
Shufflepuck

Updates are always welcome and I enjoy updating my USB install and trying it on a few computers.

Sadly the hardware support for newer Netbooks and core2 laptops could be better.

My ASUS 1001P netbook has no Lan or working sound and the USB lan adapter I purchased for it just locks up the USB under AROS until I remove it, AROS dose recognise it and try to load a lan driver for my adapter so it will hopefully be fixed in the future.

Without network or sound support AROS is not very useful at present on my netbook but it dose feel quite usable speed wise to I will continue trying the updates as they are released and I get exited each time I hear that there has been a new release and read the new features list.

If the current progress continues I think this time next year AROS will be a very nice light wait netbook OS for us old Amiga fans
