   posted by kas1e on 20-Nov-2010 11:42:06 (3234 reads)
Epiar is an open source, open-ended space action/trading game.

Starting from the version 0.4.2 will be released for amigaos4 as well, and will be distributed from the official site. While main site is not yet updated, you can already grab current/last version from os4depot (in upload query for now) and have some fun.

Few screenshots of editor-mode:

In game:

Video of game in action on peg2/1ghz/radeon9250/aos4.1u2 on youtube (fullscreen & win modes): here

The game are opengl/c++/lua/xml based, so, because of our not so good graphics subsytem and all that warp3d/minigl problems, you can't expect too much FPS on a weak machines, and, better choice as usuall for all new, modern and normal games : fast enough cpu (1ghz and more), latest aos4 with all the latest updates, and latest version of minigl.

Game compiled staticaly, to avoid sobj-hell, so all what you need its download, unpack and run by dbl-click from icon.

If you want more options (like disable audio, run editor-mode), you can play with binary in the shell, and all available commands will be show when you will do "epiar.exe -h".

Control of the game are:

SPACE - Fire the weapon that you currently have armed. If nothing happens then you might be out of ammo or not have a weapon attached.
TAB - Cycle through all the nearby Ships.
t - Target the closest ship.
SHIFT - Cycle through your different Weapons.
P - Pause or Un-Pause the game.
m - Display a map of the entire universe.
M - Display a map of the current Quadrant.
i - Display player information.
l - Land on a planet.
w - Watch your target.
q - Quit watching your target.

For choice resolution / win / full-screen modes, change manually Resources/Defenitions/options.xml file , bettwen tags "video" (almost at top of file).

Check the main epiar.net site for more info about game.

Enjoy !

ps. if some of you want to write "good work" or kind even without trying the game, plz, try it for first , maybe that will be not what you expect from :)

@Marko
Its still not finished, there is no any normal Menu for example, and because of it feel of game a bit downs, but as authors say, they will add all the stuff for next release. But even in current form its can be pretty interesting for ppls who like those kind of games (imho of course)

@Templario

yup. i gave it a try on my SAM -- just for laughs -- and it's nearly unusable. just flying about with no other ships about i get around 5 FPS.

shame, too, since it looks very similar to the escape velocity series of games on the macintosh back in the '90s.

hopefully as time goes on this and other 3D games will get somewhat more usable on the SAMs. of course by then i hope to have an X1000....

@eliyahu
Well, even if on new sam and on x1000, use old radeon9250 (for which we have warp3d drivers already), it will be 100% faster and usable. I say about radeon9250, because imho for now there is no warp3d drivers for new HD cards, and i am not sure if they will have place at all. But maybe i am wrong, and some w3d drivers for new cards will be done as stop-gap-solution while there is no gallium. Because have x1000 with radeon9250, it will be of course not bad, but not as good as can be with new radeons :)

@all
Amigaos4 distrib on the epiar.net for now

I think the same that you friend, I'll hope that with the new X1000 moves these games, beacuse it this Amiga can'ts, we think in make 2D games instead of 3D.
