Software News   Software News : UFO - Alien Invasion for AmigaOS4
   posted by afxgroup on 23-Nov-2010 14:26:07 (14814 reads)
UFO - Alien Invasion has been released and can be downloaded from Amigasoft.net web site.

---------------------------------------------------------

General

It is the year 2084. You control a secret organisation charged with defending Earth from a brutal alien enemy. Build up your bases, prepare your team, and dive head-first into the fast and flowing turn-based combat.

UFO: Alien Invasion is a squad-based tactical strategy game in the tradition of the old X-COM PC games, but with a twist. Our game combines military realism with hard science-fiction and the weirdness of an alien invasion. The carefully constructed turn-based system gives you pin-point control of your squad while maintaining a sense of pace and danger.

Over the long term you will need to conduct research into the alien threat to figure out their mysterious goals and use their powerful weapons for your own ends. You will produce unique items and use them in combat against your enemies. If you like, you can even use them against your friends with our multiplayer functionality.

UFO: Alien Invasion. Endless hours of gameplay — absolutely free.

The game takes a lot of inspiration from the X-COM series by Mythos and Microprose. However, it's neither a sequel nor a remake of any X-COM or other commercial title. What we as a team wanted to make is a brand new experience that tries to surpass the quality of games from 1992, rather than simply recreate them with flashier graphics.

We also believe that open-source projects don't need to be disorganised or badly-managed. We work together in a friendly and professional way, with a clear vision for a game that we know is worth playing.
---------------------------------------------------------

Warning.

* On systems with 64MB video card you could have the usual texture problem. You have to wait the new w3d drivers that will resolve this problem.
* If you have problems during launch of the game and your partition is using an SFS file system please try to test in on a JXFS or FFS partition

@samo79

Btw, when you have those corruption, did game slowing downs a lot or speed are the same, just wrong textures ?

Why i ask : while i port AssaultCube, after loading of 3 or 4 times of some new map, i have heavy textures distortion, and everything slowing downs a lot. Pretty interesting to know, if it the same problem, or just something else.

But with all other games all is ok in that terms, i never see any corruptions on my radeon9250 with 256 megs , only see it first time in assault-cube

In my SamFlex, it starts to crawl before the texture distortion, but after that I checked that the speed comes back to normal (I can move the game pointer as fast as before).

yes, you will have also slodowns. It is normal that with 256MB card you get texture corruption less times than us that have a 64MB card

@afxgroup
Btw, those beta-warp3d-drivers which have beta-testers for now, fix only texture distortion (but slowing downs will be there the same, just no distortions), or , drivers fixed in a way that textures will be automatically reuploaded somethere at the begining of graphics memory, so while will be no corruption, also there will be no slowing downs ?

@kas1e

Mmm it's difficult to say, generally when i have graphic corruptions i tend to close the program immediately, but if you need i can test more deeply

The game itself seems quite fast, except some part such credit section and a few others ...

@broadblues

Imho you have old version of SDL (which in last time have fixes in term of dynamic loading, and they was done by afxgroup, and i think they was done because of that game). Maybe old version of minigl as well.

Can someone upload this to one of the file sharing sites please?
I can't download it it's too slow 30 Kb/s. I assume it's server location problem.

So, to get it right.

Does this game works normally under AmigaOne/Pegasos2 systems?

If yes, then probably either SAM boards are crap, or AmigaOS 4.1 is still in beta stage.

Yep it was an SDL version problem. Now working fine.

Haven't had the time to investigate deeply but all seems okay on my SAM-Flex.

I ended up using wget with httpresume option (-c) as my internet connection was very slow that day and also kept going down before I'd completed the download. Worked well even if time consuming.

Yep, it works fine on my peg2 with 1ghz. On SAM it for sure will be slower, because SAM have slow cpu in compare, small piece of L2 cache and something else which i do not remember. But new sam460 should be even better in almost every area in compare with peg2/a1 (it's based on tests of RageMem only)

I'm downloading it for my phone.

If it's good I might fire up the Peg and A1 to see if I can get it going.
