Announcement   Announcement : Icaros Desktop version 1.2.5 has been released
   posted by paolone on 30-Nov-2010 17:17:37 (3937 reads)
It took a long time and many polishing/scripting/coding efforts, but a fresh new version of Icaros Desktop is already available for download, both in the Live! and Light flavours, and also as update disc for current Icaros 1.2.4 users. Version 1.2.5 introduces many fixes, features and enhancement, which have been extensively explained on the Icaros Website during the last two weeks. It's not a "point release", but it's the nearest thing to it.

New features include remote control of Icaros workbench, screen dragging on GeForce cards, MyWorkspace drawer for user projects, wireless networking on Atheros 5000 wi-fi adapters (with or without encryption), new games, tools and application, and many, many bugfixes which improve - at least a little bit - overall stability. A more complete list of enhancements and download links are as usual on the Icaros Website, http://www.icarosdesktop.org

(PS: the old address www.vmwaros.org has expired, please use the official one instead)

Well done Paolo, for one more time. Icaros Desktop just gets better and better.

Thanks (I really need to buy a laptop for that).

It for sure is a very nice release.

We have a irc channel at freenode #icaros

I will be there as often as I can. Most around 20-23 Norwegian time.

The channel is most for support, but also talk around #icaros

Um.. I apologise for my system screwing up, but is there a link to the Icaros Website or downloads? the same post on Amiga.org links to the main, active site, but I accessed that with Opera, so its likely my options for display are different.

Also, Im trying to download Icaros 1.2.5 Lite via Torrents, Vuze, with 1 seed, 2 peers currently, but Im not getting a connection, maybe firewalled by BT, Telco? Is there any way of setting torrents up to conenct when available more relaibly? Or do I need a working client?

I like Icaros, lets me use PCs when Microsofts Mad, Linux is insane, and Mac is Jobs. 8}

EDIT

Oopsies.. just spotted the plain text URL at the end of the text for the Icaros website. Sorry about that, really must be my settings. 8(

I downloaded this at the library yesterday... they have blazingly fast internet...
While fooling around with it. I found you can run the live version directly from the .iso file.

So, I'm having problems with this running it in VirtualBox...does anybody use VirtualBox to run IcarosDesktop?

Nice job. Just downloaded 1.2.5 DVD image and installed on a Dell OptiPlex GX280 with 3Com 3C905 NIC and NVidia GeForce 8400GS card, 2 GB RAM and 80 GB hard drive. Installed flawlessly, and runs flawlessly. Video, audio and network work great. Love the new Nuveau video drivers with the drag-down screens, just like the old Amigas. Even works fine with USB Keyboard and mouse (GX280 does not have PS2 style mouse and keyboard connectors).

Hopefully, printing (Postscript) capability will be coming soon. Will install productivity from my old Amiga SW in AmiBridge/Janus-UAE) while waiting for a decent native word processor (with RTF). Remote Desktop and FTP utilites work great. Would like to be able to access Windows Shares from my network for easier file exchanges.

@M0lebrain

Yes, Icaros can run in VirtualBox. You're not the first person to have problems with this though; maybe try a different version of VirtualBox (try the newest version first if you haven't already got it).

I use VirtualBox along with VMware to test Icaros on both virtualization technologies, and it runs fine. I have written some hints about virtual box in the Icaros Manual but, to sum up:

- to get sound, chosse AC97 audio both in virtual machine configuration and in AHI prefs

- to get networking, use a AMD PC Net II card (not III) for the virtual machine as eth0. Choose a NAT connection. You can choose the card model in network advanced settings for card #1.

- to set a VESA widescreen resolution that fits very well on your brand new LCD monitor or HD television, follow this guide
> http://vmwaros.blogspot.com/2010/10/widescreen-resolutions-with-virtualbox.html

- please also remember to give enough space to Icaros on virtual hard drives. 6 GB are fine and, to avoid issues when updating, use a single partition for everything: Icaros 1.2.5 provides the "MyWorkspace" drawer which helps keeping user files together without having a work: partition. Or, alternatively, use a 3 GB partition for DH0: and 3 GB for work:.

- set a minimal amount of 384 MB of RAM for the virtual machine, 512 MB or more are better

- keep VT-x/AMD-V enabled in advanced system settings if your physical processor supports them (or disable them if it doesn't)

- give at least 6 MB of video memory if you plan to use medium-bigger resolutions at 32 bit of colours. Keep video acceleration and 3D acceleration OFF for now (they aren't of any use).

AND: don't forget to INSTALL Icaros... sometimes people just forgets they're using a DVD, even if it's only a file on the hard drive.

KNOWN ISSUE

There is a issue, though, that we have to live with: sometimes the mouse pointer gets 'stuck' into a random area of the screen. The only way to get rid of this, is just moving repeatedly the mouse faster between this area's boundaries.
