Software News   Software News : WordNet 3.2 released for AmigaOS4
   posted by Trixie on 18-Dec-2010 21:03:32 (5045 reads)
Daniel Jedlicka has released an updated version of the electronic dictionary and thesaurus WordNet. Based on the original WordNet by the Cognitive Science Laboratory, Princeton University, this greatly enhanced AmigaOS4 version adds a comfortable ReAction-based interface and numerous other features.

New in this release:

- The toolbar has no bevel box drawn around it (looks better).
- New option in Settings: the program window can be made to always stay visible, on top of other windows.
- New option in Settings: quitting the program on pressing the Escape key is now configurable (and off by default).
- New option in Settings: word frequency counts can be switched off (default), which results in slightly faster searches and a cleaner display of results.
- Bugfix: if an APPLIBMT_ToFront command arrived from application.library and WordNet was iconified, the program would produce a DSI error.
- Bugfix: when started from CLI and too deep in the directory structure, the program would fail to lock its icon.
- An internal stack cookie of 80KB now ensures optimum program performance.
- Compiled against the latest AmigaOS4 SDK.
- Compiled with GCC's "-Wall" switch and got rid of all compiler warnings.
- Internal code cleanup.

Very handy program, good to see it's still being worked on.

Cheers.

Great thanks!!:) :)

I have a little feature request (but maybe a ReAction limitation?). Could you please add a keyboard shortcut to get to the input gadget? e.g. Like pressing "enter" or "Tab" after the search was completed and the cursor appears again.
It's a bit annoying having to reach to the mouse for this.

this is, if there is nothing like it already implemented and me too clumsy to find it.

You mean something like this?

- You press a key.
- The search string gadget becomes activated.
- The current contents of the string becomes highlighted.
- You can start typing right over, replacing the gadget contents with a new word.

Yes, that would be practical, and dead easy to implement. How come I never thought of this before? I guess Return/Enter would be the key to use.

I didn't think about the highlighting the current string, but yes this sounds even more practical!
Would be very very handy and cool if you could implement it!!

@Amigo1

It's implemented now and will be available with the next WordNet update.

@Snuffy

Dammit, I don't even have a website I'm saving the PayPal button for something bigger I'm currently working on. And honestly: I did put a lot of work to the WordNet browser but what you, I guess, appreciate the most is the dictionary itself: and this is where credits and thanks must fly to Princeton.

@everyone

Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you like the program! An update should be released early next year, as soon as I sort out a little bug I've spotted.

@Trixie

Just a minor suggest: ask Mason for painting an icon for the folder and put it as main folder
Actually when you extract the program with unarc it spread the files aniwhere ! :-/

Nice work, looks like it might be quite useful when I am writing reports and instruction manuals and I can't think of the right "unit of language" to use

That's a good suggestion, I'll try to have the icon ready for the next release.
