Hardware News   Hardware News : First Natami MX boards produced
   posted by Forcie-NatamiTeam on 13-Feb-2011 19:40:58 (18957 reads)
Thomas Hirsch of the Natami Team has just manufactured the first Natami MX boards. This is the board revision that will be sold to the public, provided that the board bringup and hardware tests goes well.

Natami is a clone of the classic Amiga computer and its architecture. It is a 68k-based computer containing the classic Amiga chipset with enhancements and quite a few modern hardware features.

The MX board features:
-Altera FPGA from the Cyclone IV-series, containing the enhanced Amiga chipset "SuperAGA" as well as other system logic, and the brand new 68k CPU design "N68050"
-512 MB DDR2 SDRAM (onboard)
-1x PCI slot, expandable to 3x PCI with a PCI riser
-"SyncZorro" expansion slot, for adding f.e. a CPU card (68060 card will be available as an option for this slot)
-DVI-I port for 31kHz video (one can connect both analog VGA and digital DVI), scandoubling function for legacy modes
-15kHz RGB-output/input expansion slot (for optional 15kHz card)
-Realtek RTL8110 Gigabit Ethernet
-NEC USB2 controller and USB ports
-3,5 inch IDE port
-Internal Compact Flash connector (IDE)
-Kickstart flash memory
-Floppy connector (Amiga and PC drives both usable)
-Amiga serial port (although reduced to 9-pin)
-Amiga parallel port
-2x Amiga joystick/mouse port
-4x Cinch/RCA connectors for stereo sound output and input
-PS/2 keyboard/mouse ports (old bigbox Amiga keyboards are connectable)
-Classic Amiga LED:s along with scandoubler LED

In theory, this would be an option for OS4.1-Classic:

I repeat: IN THEORY

AGA screens modes are already supported under AmigaOS4 using fake screens.

Not 100%. It only seems to work for very simple screens.

It doesn't work on Total Chaos AGA superfancy AmigaOS standard Screens.

@ LOU

Yes thats the right way for user of classics.

Theory for now, but if someone make it work together NATAMI & Cresendo and NATAMI sale be in high volumes (for what I hope) Hyperion will for sure make port.

Natami&Crescendo on OS 4.2 for classic

There will be no PPC expansion card for Natami, we discussed that on their forum.

Only optiion is to Hyperion port for Natami, but I somehow think that will not happen.

Winner combo will be Natami + 68k AROS fully optimized for that machine.

@AmigaPPC

Who knows, if the expedition slot is documented, then there are a few companies that know how to and there are a few hardware geek that do upgrades on AmigaONE cpu modules etc, and old blizzard cards, making PowerPC cpu card for NetAmi is most likely a lot easier then for classic Amiga, way Hyperion keeps on support the dead old and slow classic Amigas is beyond me supporting NetAmi makes more sense if there was PowerPC card for it.

I don't know if the Natami people will see this or not but I'd just like to say great job and that I appreciate all the hard work that they've done!

In theory yes :) In practice, no. They are no longer available, regardless of what it says on the website. Try to buy one it won't work. I called the company and they are all sold out.

This happen when you play chinese post ;-D

To be fully precise what the NATAMI team did say was this:

Quote:
Regarding PPC.:

There are no immediate plans to create a PPC card.
But the CPU expansion slot is on the NATAMI for a reason .....
Technically adding a PPC is posssible.
The amount of work for a PPC CPU card is about the same as developing a 68K CPU card.
Thomas did develop 3 different 68K CPU Cards so far.
So why not a PPC card someday too?

Thomas has developed a PowerPC mainboard before.
So I think it should be no problem for him to create a PowerPC CPU card.
But this has to make economical sense ...

There is no point to create a CPU card for only handful of people.
But If there are a few hundred people expressing their interest I see no reason why he would not create a card for them.

@BigGun

If Natami team sell 5000 boards ( minimum number that I expecet ).. demand for PPC card is inevitable .
So start to plan now :)

Facts are that Natami is modern computer capable to run 68k programs expandable with usb, with fast memory and connections for modern periperials...
Procesor is good, fast for 3.1 programs and games.
PPC CPU add on for OS 4.1 is possibilty, option.

Problem is intersts of Hyperion in next year or two (sucses of X1000) and the rest possible hardware..
IF Natami go high volume they might consider it..
IF relations with Natami is good (what is not case with DCE and becouse of that Grex owners have no support, not small number of owners)

For that time Classic PPC cards will start to die.
Cassics owners will by modern (Sam, X1000 ) or retro (Natami)
Next upgrade for Classics is hard to develop for old PPC card and new OS 4 demands..
So we will se...

Congratulations to natami team....now get OS4 running on the damn thing

Unless there is any native 68k port of OS4.1 that we have not heard about around the corner, we will be focusing on supporting AmigaOS1-3 and AROS-68k. Our new 68k CPU architecture is the heart and soul of the Natami.

[/Quote]

Could PPC card be supported via CPU Zorro or PCI?
Point is to have a super Classic but to make it expandable to PPC generation, too

Boy are an optimist. I like this!

I seriously doubt that 500 boards can be sold.

I doubt this for both any new PowerPC AMIGA hardware,
I doubt this for the NATAMI, and I doubt this for any PC running UAE from New/Commodore,
All of those three having a different customer group.

The AMIGA market is a dead horse.
I think we can all accept this and be honest with us.

If the AMIGA market would still be even minimally existing, this thread would have many thousands of comments by now.

That the AMIGA market is dead, is just a fact.

@Big Gun
Well I think that this number is reachable for NATAMI if board will have reasonable price.
What is reasonble?
Every price that cover cost of pruduction and development with minimum earnings.
Marketing of your product will be necessary.
Bundle with OS and few programs and games and game with new possibilitis to show diference ( remake of games or new game to compare and to see compatibilty ).
Hoby market isnt dead horse.
And if hoby computer can give to every average user possibility to: Surf net, watch DVD movies, play music, type text, play some favorite games) except Crysis then I cant see it like dead horse...
You resolve with Natami problems with lack of power and expandibility all problems that classics have for newer development.
Insist on that when you go to sale boards.
Natami isnt computer that split community in any way like minimig or minimig AGA isnt.
Natami is new classic with modern peripherials, new power and possibilities.
Consider PPC like option and promote that. Morph OS and OS4.1 are options.
( Imagine where community will be now if we have Sonnet PPC before OS4 development in terms of power and development)

Thats way Natami is here to reunite Amiga community A.org, Amigans. net AW, Blue - Red, AROS.

Your mission is bigger that you can imagine.
For someone who watch this scene from side for about 15 years I didnt see any product software or hardware wich isnt split community in some way.
Natami break this rule.

Natami is in advance becouse of clear concpet of hardware design and goals, no dates obligations and devoted crew.
On your forums everyone is reachable and everyone have answer.
So dont worry about success

@BigGun

This is one of the reasons I like the NatAmi project, you guys have your feet planted firmly on the ground. NatAmi is going to be pretty freakin' sweet, but it's not going to Take Over The World like some of the more far out community members are predicting for the other Amigoid systems.
