News   News : JIT enabled E-UAE bounty - UPDATE
   posted by Troels on 18-Feb-2011 23:00:59 (17992 reads)
Update on the bounty for a JIT enabled version of E-UAE for AmigaOS4.1.
The bounty has been assigned to Álmos Rajnai. Álmos is the author of the JIT 68K emulator in AmigaOS4 (Petunia)and undoubtedly highly qualified for the job.

Our current version of E-UAE on AmigaOS4.1 (and also MorphOS) supports only interpretive emulation and is quite slow compared to f.ex. winUAE.
Gaining JIT 68K code emulation (like Petunia) will speed things up. Especially AmigaOS4.1 users with slower machines should gain a lot from a JIT version of E-UAE. The JIT version will automatically become open source and other PPC OS will hopefully be able to benefit from the work as well.

As usual donations can be made via the Amigabounty.net website: JIT enabled E-UAE bounty

@Rachy
Thank you very much for your effort, hope it will be supported by donations from both MOS and AOS4 camps, as well as MOS Team could have use of the source code. Good way to resolve the stupid wars.

Even if it`s not part of bounty, some kind of ECS/AGA emulation optimized for 604 / EP440 / G3 and G4 CPUs would be also benefitial for overal speed. After all, contrary to Petunia, this is not just 68020 emulation: we need full Classic emulation box as fast as possible (taking 604 200Mhz and EP440 500Mhz to be the lower edge).

Good luck, quality development and big support from Serbia, as well as I wish
you a good life in New Zealand!

@TrevorDick

Well, I hope AmiSys / AmigaForever will be out or integrated to OS4?

Any negotiations that way (AmigaForever special for OS4 was publicly promised by AmigaInc however, Cloanto sais nothing was signed).

Also, is there any way to speed up OpenOffice and Timberwolf development (more machines given to OO Team, paying some Amiga programmers?). It would be a shame to have such strong machines as X1000 and SAM 460 and no decent Office and Browser!

I hope not. These are great products, but I prefer plain WB enviroment (it is much better for our needs than some "bloated" distributions - OS4 with eg. RunInUAE would be much clever choice).

Hello,

E-UAE Could be better when removing some SDL stuff inside, for example.

As this JIT is for E-UAE, Rachy maybe surely need to adapt/improve also E-UAE more or less at the same time ?

Or maybe E-UAE won't be the source of the work ?

Hum....already a technical question.... we are all curious users...

If OS4's SDL gets some hardware-accelerated optimisations, then the SDL version of E-UAE might actually be better (and easier to keep up-to-date) than our non-SDL version. I gather the SDL version is already better in certain circumstances.

@Mrodfr
I wonder if we wouldn't be better ditching E-UAE (whose development has stopped???) in favour of PUAE (link).

Perhaps a bounty website that has the balls to start bounties that concern both "sides" would make things go faster ...

For an upgraded UAE there is a *a lot* of mutual interest to generate some cash in the form of a bounty. Only problem with this kind of program is, that it has to be maintained ... something that is clearly not the case with EUAE.

@realize

Unfortunately, there are things that cannot go faster. But I don't intend to wait until everything is finished before I release a preview.

@vox

Petunia is a '040 emulator, not '020 only. OS4 reports it as '020 to improve compatibility. Just to be clear, but this is off here.

@Mrodfr

I use the recent E-UAE sources, but I have no intention (at the moment) improving it other than what is needed for the JIT. So, no high hopes, please. :)

No harm intended. OK may it be not just 68k JIT, think about improving the chipset emulation part. Thanks for writting it from scractch and trying outperform yourself (and Petunia) but this is complete machine emulation box. I see no high hopes banner and I am a bit said, but I know you will do your magic. Thanks!

P.S.
In some other thread Amiga Blitter mentioned DSP in SAM 440/460
This could be exploited to the Max!

Hello,

Apparently, the morphOS FAB's sources don't use SDL:

http://fabportnawak.free.fr/uae/

Rachy, I don't said that you must do something on E-UAE (just that adapt for JIT), It's just the fact that there are also a lots of UAE clones for the differents NG platforms and an important point IMHO is to choose the best source for starting.

Recompiling first a no SDL version is IMHO a good source for starting the Job.

EDIT: some peoples confirm me that this version not use SDL and this version have verry good speed for MorphOS for the AGA but unfortunately lack of Picasso96 support.

For me, Rachy, some work must be done for having the best starting source before adapting the JIT on. You surely use this source and add the Picasso96 support on.

Maybe anothersolution is to ask Fab for this work and let him make the MorphOS JIT at the same time ? For sure, It's just my POV.

@Vox

interesting !! You should post this information on some developper thread.

@mrodfr, vox

If you will fill Rachy by strange requests , which have no connection with JIT - that for sure will not help in any way :)

Related to SDL: SDL version of UAE work better than non SDL version , and speed differences beetwen is so small, that there is no need to worring about. I on peg2 always use SDL version, and it works fine. SDL on aos4 today are good enough, and problems only if someone can't code normally over it.

If some SDL games are slow (i think that is from which come such stuff about "SDL SLOW"), they slow not because of SDL, but because of how they done. Our current aos4 version of SDL are pretty good.

You both always can start to learn C , and trying to compile EUAE with or without SDL :)

Hello,

I just want to point to rachy the numerous possibility of E-UAE port and sources available on differents platforms.

Maybe It's worth a try to analyze and spent little time to take the best of some E-UAE ports (or maybe just take one) and/or merge better things together and make a new E-UAE before starting the JIT.

Kas1e, this is strange because some french users report me this morning that the E-UAE fab version, the NO SDL, work much better with AGA and generally with better speed and just lack P96 support.

Do you have tried the FAB NO SDL version ?

I have just found that the Fab version exist with POwer-SDL+ P96 and another one without SDL and this one work with better speed.

there are other documents to examine that can help improving routines. I have to look in my folders...

@all

Please don't poke me with any UAE improvements what you see fit. I had takn the job of implementing the JIT, and that is enough on my plate. I will take care that the solution would be available for reuse to anybody, so other UAE implementations will also profit from it (hopefully).

@Tuxedo

OFF: The earthquake was really bad this time, resided to the South Island again. I truly feel sorry for the fellows in Christchurch. We live in Auckland, on the North, haven't noticed anything until we heard the news. JAHC is also living here. I don't know anything about Hans, I hope he is all right.
