Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Hyperion launches official AmigaOS website
posted by Petah on 22-Oct-2011 6:02:45 (9287 reads)
In a surprising yet often requested plead for action, Hyperion Entertainment has officially launched an AmigaOS website found at www.amigaos.net. The site, which currently promotes the operating system and some of its many features, also sports screen shots, information about the Amiga range of computers, key AmigaOS applications and the AmigaOS community at large.

Well done, took only, what, 8 years?

Better late than never, though.

Gotta love the display bugs on the new Timberwolf screenshots. BTW, whoever wrote the OWB section is totally confused about version numbers, browser naming, and more.

Otherwise, a nice site. Much better than any previous attempts for an OS4 homepage.

(Edit: Additionally, the second link of the newsitem is broken too, gets you to the HTML validator, to show the amigaos.net page is not valid HTML... :) )

Nice!

I think kas1e and others will welcome this particular info:
what has changed since 4.1u2

However, the Community section needs some more work (eg. www.amiga.cz doesn´t cover OS4; I would recommend add amigaportal.cz and also powerpc.lukysoft.cz).

I'm so confused.

djrikki set up a site amigaos.net a couple of years ago, and it was pretty good, and has been updated constantly.

The announcement was here: http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55046

.. and he's uploaded some videos to YouTube about the site, the latest one is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gF8K_AfrIs

Did Hyperion buy the domain name off him or something?

Better late than never, and, should to say, that site are the best from all their before attempts. From brief look, looks like kind of professional.

Pretty cool :) Now need to have the same changes for a-eon site, and reduce price for x1000 to 1300-1500$ :) (and port aos4 to any of mac-books, of course).

Glad to see that all of this done at last. All those forums, blogs, aos4 sites. While market are small, having everything done in right way is right.

After some checking, i found that application section a bit messy and not so right done, i.e :

- In Graphics there is AMC (while it not graphis, its mediacenter, more going to video or media section). There is better point about amifig or lodepaint (for example)

- Utilities have Filer and Jack, but i think there is just _must be_ Dopus4 as well. Not that i against djrikki , but its all looks like he make application sections, and put Jack just because, while not many of us use it (but many of us use Filer and Dopus4)

- Office maybe should include CinnamonWriter as well (As something which in develop, and have support for DocX).

- Themes and Tweaks should imho also have DigiClock. Really good tweak (small, efficient and so on).

- Games should have something which will be 100% works fine and cool on current amigaos (like Aquaria). And imho there will be cool to add one game from AmiBoing.de, as something aos4-special. Not just porting. For example "Swamp Defence". Because for example SuperTuxKart and Nexiuz, are slow-slow-slow like hell-hell even on peg2 with 1gh.

- Internet should have Amirc and/or Wookiechat and/or SabreMSN as well. But as IRC are very popular still, then, its better include Amirc/Wookichat, in compare with some XSSReader which no one use :)

In others looks more or less fine :)

Yep. And AmiDisk and DM2 and... And for Development CygnusED and CubicIDE are still really useful and should be mentioned. And SDKBrowser and ...

(And yes, I know you're wainting for an answer - but I'm busy surfing AmigaOS.net at the moment...)

I don't like the automated animation, the periodic leftscrolling on the main page http://www.amigaos.net/

Nobody wants this, or am I wrong?

I can't write extensive comments, but here's some feedback anyway...

Very good execution - clean, simple, nice, modern. Congratulations to all involved!

However, I'm concerned about the contents of the features page. I think it should be entirely re-thought to target the curious eyes of potential new users (which is the purpose of the website), giving them a really general and properly prioritized overview of the key features, without going too deep into details (like, f.ex., in the case of icons*), without giving information that is obvious and expectable from a modern system (f.ex. TrueType fonts support) and summarizing and grouping the tech stuff (Python, Cairo, Grim Reaper, shared objects, etc.) in a single section. Also, I can't understand why key aspects like the responsiveness and the feeling of total control have not been mentioned. Ah, and let's be honest: the section about Workbench borders blatant falsity!

*BTW: ironically, the longish description is all about PNG icons (as said, not worth mentioning at all) and omits, instead, a typical characteristic of AmigaOS, i.e. the double-state icons (which, just for clarity, is not something that should be mentioned in an overview of this kind anyway).

Last note: About -> Hyperion Entertainment refers to the text of Support -> Forum, instead of the appropriate one.

Hi,

Good news!

Thanks a lot. It'll be easier for new amigans (or even non-Amiga people) to understand/know what AmigaOS is.

Really? In late 2011, there is a need to proclaim something "the one and only AmigaOS"?

I was also quite surprised to learn that Timberwolf was under an open source license.... I am sure the programmers on the "not the one and only" Amiga-like operating system variants will be pleased to hear that.

Finally! Congratulations Hyperion and George Sokianos! Hopefully it'll help communicate the Amiga scene on a broader level, and btw very good design/layout
Is it just me or the OS with the BoingBall inside screams "NEW LOGO"? Between this, the imminent A1X1K release, Update 4, ACube getting the AmigaOne name/license, well, Timberwolf, there hasn't been so much beef in Amiga-land since years!

It is a bit confusing that DJ Rikki`s address has been used, and his website replaced
Seen that it was missing few days ago. It seems RiKki`s work has been used to it, so its overally good.

However, its great there is *finally* informative website on OS4, I kinda miss
the old CUTE website look and articles, but this is also a modern design solution (reminds of DJ Nicks PageStream - Grashoppers LCC website design)
