Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Jack 3.2 Released - Hello asynchronous downloads
   posted by djrikki on 6-May-2012 23:22:40 (3095 reads)
What is Jack?

Jack is a great, multi-purpose commodity for AmigaOS, AROS, Classic Amiga, MorphOS and now WarpOS.

Show me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5DmlQmyzbY (February 2012)

Features:

* Comprehensive 'App-Store' for AmigaOS with NEW Bundles
* Donation database in the App-Store - donate directly to the developers (hint, hint, hint)
* AmigaOS Knowledge Base
* Great looking interface - drop anything on it to Open or Play
* Integrated Image Editor, crop, image effects, add watermarks, resize and more
* Google Currency Converter
* Weather forecast for your location
* Screen capture with crop area
* Developer's Calculator
* Integrated File Manager
* AmigaOS Preferences Window
* Search your computer, USB devices or network
* Much more...
* Great shortcut keys: Press F, open two Filer windows side-by-side (AmigaOS4 only)
* Great shortcut keys: Press D, open Directory Opus
* Great shortcut keys: Press TAB, enter URL, go to website
* Great shortcut keys: Press S open a Shell, N open NotePad, G get hex colour anywhere on screen

Version State:
AmigaOS/AROS: Full Release
MorphOS - Beta/Untested, accordingly to one Italian amiga user it works almost perfectly.
Classic Amiga/WarpOS: Beta/Untested, unable to test.

Last minute:
Oops! Just spotted a debug message left in the knowledge base, will remove at a later date.

Availability:

Available shortly on OS4Depot, Aminet, AROS Archives and MorphOS-Files.

Changelog:

* WarpOS compile now available.

* (MorphOS Only) Debug output removed at startup.

* Check for New Updates (of Jack) has been removed for all non-AmigaOS4
operating systems.

* JackTunes restricted to AmigaOS 4 for the time being due to its reliance on
Python and SMBFS.

* AppStore: All downloads (apart from Featured Downloads) are now asynchronous.
In plain english this means multple downloads are now possible, even if you
close the Appstore window and move into any other part of Jack the download(s)
will continue in the backgrond. (AmigaOS 4 Only) Outside of the Appstore you
will be notified by the Ringhio notification system that a download has been
completed and is available to install as normal through the Download Manager.

* The state of the download list is updated as each download finishes, if you
end up with a partial download (computer crash/lost connection) during
downloading - on restarting Jack- you will be given the opportunity to either
re-download the partial download(s) or remove them from the list.
Notice I said 'the list is updated as each download finishes' - if you only
downloaded 1 item you will not necessarily be given this same opportunity.

* It is currently not possible to quit Jack if downloads are in progress or
partial downloads exist in the Download Manager. Please visit the download
manager and rectify. Might newbie-fy this behaviour in the future.

* (AmigaOS 4 Only) Every 4 hours news from Amigaworld is shown as a ringhio
notification assuming your rexx server is running; I know some weird Amiga users
love to turn stuff off unnecessarily!

* Apologies for delay, fixed the malformed url string for adding events to
Google Calendar. Days and months are now zero-padded correctly.

* (MorphOS Only) All PDF calls are pre-configured to Apdf on the system
partition inside the Applications drawer.

* The filesize is more correctly positioned underneath each download that is in
progress.

* Fixed possible inaccessiblity of the 'Install Now' option in the Download
Manager.

* Added Jack Icon to the Ringhio notification messages

* Jack now has an Arexx port. A small number of initial arexx messages have
been added. See Jack_Arexx_Commands.rexx included for the current list. This
will be much improved in a future release foreinstance being able to process
images and applying Image Effects and Watermarks.

* Removed redundant locale strings

* (Other OS) Corrections in AmigaOS Knowledge base with regard to local files
and helper applications.

* (AmigaOS 4 Only) During installation the user will now be asked whether they
wish to add Jack to the Dock (rather than auto-detection/auto-placement) and
they will be asked whether they want Jack to be added to WBStartup
(recommended).

@djrikki

Cool, just installed Jack 3.2, play with it a bit and all goes well

- However i have some more question/request, i'm trying to close the program but for what i can read on the readme it seems that the "q" key are marked to work only on the AROS version .. why ?
Can you add this support key also on the OS4 binary ?

- A new version of the standalone Assist 0.43 program was recently released, it add a lot of new things/bug fixed, maybe (hopefully) you can update to the same release your Assist version included into the Jack archive ?

- I note a very annoying flickering issue everytime there is an automatic update into the main Jack window, for example each time a minute is passed and the clock will be updated still this strange graphical effect, is it possible to finally fix it in order to avoid any flickering effect ?

Well done !

The usual last famous words .. ! found another very little bug ..

To reproduce it --> open the App-Store section --> click on the "Recent Uploads" button --> click on the NetSurf file in order to download it

Here i always got:

Quote:
Cannot write to file RAM:RAM:netsurf-lha !
File: baselibrary.hws (current line 134 - In function: OpenFile)

A double RAM: assignment ?

Hey Samo, thanks for the feedback.

3. Yeah, its a limitation I hit in Hollywood, its not possible to have a double buffered transparent layer. That's the reason why I removnd the Seconds 'hand' from the clock display - to make the flicker less noticeable. I may take another look and see if there is another approach, but clearly I don't wanna sacrifice the transparency.

2. The knowledge base in Jack takes Daniel's original concept and takes it in a different direction. The two software packages are only linked in the way they look. Which is why I renamed it to clarify the distinction between the two, we both do our own things at opposing speeds of development. From a technical point of view its not possible to just share code as Assist is done directly in Hollywood Designer whereas Jack is written in pure Hollywood code so everything has to be written from scratch. Please identify any particular of interest.

1. AMIGA+Q quits Jack!

That's very odd. I guess I'll have to fake myself as a non-Push4Dock user and check out the App-Store- because all my downloads currently go in Downloads:. Hopefully its a simple fix.

EDIT: Fixed. In the process of repackaging everything again (which is very time-consuming!), will be on OS4Depot again soon.

@djrikki

The lack of asychnronous downloads was the only bugbear for me when using Jack, so this is a very welcome update.

Cheers

Ahh finally i found it but only on the changelog part !
(it was a feature introduced in 2.2 version) altrough this specific shortcuts are not listed on the shortcut section of the readme, please add it into its specific shortcuts paragraph = less confusion for end users

Well fixing the flickering annoyance will take more than just an hour as the interface is 'finely meshed' into the whole eco-system.

The dictionary can be easily added to over time, plenty of images missing for sure as well, see the 'gtmooya' drawer if your curious about the inner workings of it. Atm it is read locally from the user's drive, in the future I would prefer to be able to update the dictionary remotely and grab images from a server on-the-fly.
Of course don't forget you can submit articles yourself for review... which reminds me I spotted one on the server earlier.

@djrikki

Good to see Jack development continuing at a pace, liking the image editor right now.

@samo79

As djrikki has said Assist and Jack's Knowledge Base work quite differently despite looking much the same.

Assist was originally built entirely in Hollywood Designer, however as time goes on it depends increasingly on hand coding (as I learn Hollywood).

Right now the articles in Assist are updated via Hollywood Designer, rather than an XML file as in Jack, while new functionality for Assist is being 'hand coded'. Assist may eventually use an XML file too, a universal XML could be readable by both programs, but for now I have other ideas taking priority.

Forgot to mention I updated the documentation in regard to 'Quit Jack' as well in addition to updating Jack's official website. Just need to get around to updating a few images on there to match today's updated AmigaOS.net entry.

3.2.2 available on OS4Depot/MorphOS-files shortly.. quick fix... the mouse pointer was stuck on an arrow and will now change states when required to.

@djrikki:

Thanks for the new version and the ongoing development!

Currently I've one question regarding the usage/support of Push4Dock. Since I could not find a version of it having a proper documentation and since it is also tied to a hard coded partition (assign) I did not install Push4Dock.
So I wonder what exact features of Jack cannot be used as long as Push4Dock is not installed? Could you please detail this a little bit more? Does it affect the icons presented on the new interface of Jack?

Thanks in advance!

Bye

@Reth

When you install Push4Dock you get:

Documents:
Images:
Music:
Videos:
Downloads:

Jack takes advantage of these in the sidebar of the File Manager. In addition images taken via Screen Capture end up, appropriately in Images: and downloaded software from the App-Store end up in Downloads:.

Its purely optional.

If the developers see sense in AmigaOS 4.2 and provide these assignments as standard I will update the File Manager accordingly.

Can't get the AROS version to install.
The installer acts like it is working but nothing is installed at the end.

Cheers
