Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : AmigaWorld.net is moving servers again
   posted by sibbi on 12-Dec-2012 16:13:03 (2556 reads)
Hello everybody,

Once again, we're moving servers. Our current hosting provider has decided to stop operating the server type we're currently using, so we're migrating to a new server at a new location.

The first step is already done, today at 16:00 UTC we moved the IRC services from the old server to the new one without much of a hiccup.

If you experience problems connecting to IRC, make sure you are not using the IP address of the old server, but rather the DNS name, either irc.amigaworld.net (for a rotation of all the servers) or de.amigaworld.net to use the AmigaWorld Main server.

The IP address of de.amigaworld.net should point to 85.25.152.36, if it does not, check whether you have created a hosts file entry for it pointing it somewhere else. If nothing works, you can always use /server no.amigaworld.net or /server se.amigaworld.net or simply /server 85.25.152.36

Shortly, possibly over the weekend, we'll migrate the website to the new server as well. It should be a relatively painless experience for all involved but we apologize for any interruption to our services while this is ongoing. I'll update this news item once we get closer to actually doing the website move and after we finish it.

Kind regards,
Sibbi

Just in case anyone needs it the port number is back to 6667 instead of 5555.

@Severin

That was an oversight on my part, 5555 is working again.

... and with a bit of luck, the ancient CMS-engine that powers AmigaWorld.net will be replaced in the process - perhaps even allowing for a [code]-tag. Perhaps.

One of the most favourite sites. Does it run on advertising ok?

@Petah

I wouldn't bet on it.

The CMS has nothing to do with the server, the server is quite a few years newer than the CMS. The reason this CMS is still in use is mainly due to the staff not having the resources to move us to something else, mainly because:

a.) There are quite a few custom modules written for it, specifically for the site, that would have to be rewritten for any new system.

b.) It still supports the older non-CSS capable Amiga Browsers and we would therefore have to make a custom non-CSS style template for any new CMS system

@PR

One of the obvious reasons we're going through the process of moving again is because an additional 10 euros a month is not within our budget reach.

AmigaWorld is operated as a non-profit, none of the staff members get paid and the registration cost of the domain name and the server are therefore our only expenses.

Last year we were able to run the site on advertising and donations alone, both of which we're very grateful for, and we hope to keep it that way. As always your support is appreciated.

@PR
Advertising revenue is just barely enough for the monthly costs and there hasn't been many donations this year, in fact I had to pay for the $200 initial server setup fee out of my own pocket.

@sunrise

No, that should not be neccesary.

The services database is the same as it was. Perhaps you can get another op with access to chanserv to take a look.

Heh, I like the sun rise, not sure Rat Fink does.

I changed the server to 85.25.152.36 & the port to 5555 & it's working, not sure which change did the trick, thanks.

Let us all know when you are reaching the bottom of the barrel the next time. Most likely I can probably help.

EDIT: Donation made.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
