software Classic   software Classic : A-EON Technology Acquires Personal Paint
posted by amigakit on 27-Nov-2014 15:33:19 (23429 reads)
A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has taken over the development of Personal Paint from Cloanto. The two companies had already started to cooperate in 2014 which resulted in the release of Personal Paint 7.2 and 7.3. These are the first new versions for several years, with the latest native versions available now on AMIStore for both AmigaOS 4.1 and AmigaOS 3.x.

As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively develop and own all future AmigaOS versions of Personal Paint (including possible MorphOS and AROS ports). Additionally, A-EON and Cloanto will share joint ownership of Classic Amiga versions up to version 7.2, while Cloanto may continue to work on future non-Amiga versions.

Matthew Leaman, A-EON Managing Director, said, "A-EON Technology is proud to conclude this agreement with Cloanto. Personal Paint always had a strong following with Classic Amiga users and we are excited to drive it's future." Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder added, "I've been an avid user of Personal Paint for many years. It became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG graphics. These advanced features allowed Personal Paint to replace Deluxe Paint in Commodore's Amiga computer software bundles."

Personal Paint was the first commercial Amiga graphics program to break the 2Mb chip RAM barrier and to support PowerPC CPUs. However, it also included numerous other unique features which made it a favourite with many Classic Amiga owners. These included: professional colour reduction and merge, multiple brushes, filters, animation, file format plugins and stereograms together with PostScript and 24-bit printing. The constant reinvention of the possible applications of animated GIFs (also thanks to the expiration of related patents) helped drive continued demand for Personal Paint's exceptional support for palette based modes and optimised GIF code.

Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana commented on the transfer, "I am delighted to see future Amiga Personal Paint development efforts in the hands of an extremely motivated and talented team. I would also like to pay special thanks to Trevor. Without his generous commitment, the Amiga community wouldn't be as alive and kicking as it still is today."

Working fine here too. Not that I needed it - who out there doesn't already have a copy of 7.1 from back in the day? And, if needs be, who doesn't know where to find images (ADFs and ISOs) of basically any classic Amiga software? All it takes is 5 minutes of Googling.

Wow! 4200 views of this News release- that is really wonderful :)

We have had some really great emails and pmails over the last day- so thank you to everyone who passed on their congratulations and support messages. It certainly inspires us to develop Personal Paint further for Classic Amiga and Next Generation Amiga.

Personally speaking, as a big enthusiast and daily user of my Commodore Amiga 1200, I am very pleased that there is so much public support for system still there.

If we can get enough confirmed users willing to buy it on AROS, I don't see why not? Probably around 180 users willing to buy would be enough break even (rough estimate) and cover a few hundred hours development time.

You mean 180 in total? Or 180 "aros" users ?

180 users at 10 EUR development cost per copy sold = 1800 EUR which does come anywhere close to covering a new major version release for every platform - as an estimate you would be probably be looking at 500 copies on all platforms to break even, let alone make any profit. Remember: we are not talking about a straight forward recompile here, we are looking at adding a lot more new future functionality to PPaint and modernising it substantially. This requires investment.

I think they were just asking for making native AROS (and MorphOS) builds, not adding whole bunch of new features.

That's a different story then!

However, we did not really want to have to support older legacy versions, we wanted to take one step forward at a time with new code base and new revision for all platforms supported plus make enough in revenue to cover the basic development costs. Having a consistent version for all platforms has its benefits in terms of packaging, marketing, publishing manuals and support tasks.

Well, number of views is relative to number of comments :) If removal of PPaint from Aminet was not announced there would be less comments and consequently less views.

@itix

All publicity is good :) The minority here have done us all a favour in raising awareness

Seriously though, the emails received over the last day have been very useful. Apart from the warm words, we have had a lot of feature requests - some of which are do-able, some are not. So we will present these to Andy for review. The messages of encouragement were very much appreciated and I think it shows how hungry Amiga users are for new software and how many users here do not post but love using their Amiga every day and visit the forums in the hope for good news for their favourite platform.

Onwards and upwards!

Libre Office needs debugging, hence we commissioned latest GDB to be ported to assist in this mammoth task! PPaint is a separate development concurrently with 8 other software projects in process at the moment.

So this is never going to be ported to AROS then, fine. I knew that from the start. That's why I only rely on Linux software these days, at least those are open source so the can be ported by AROS people one day.

Wonder why they mentioned it in the news item in the first place, I guess just to make it look better. We are one happy family after all :P

Are there stats on how many AROS users there are? Every project A-EON does must be commercially viable.

I can only speak for aeros plus for raspberry pi:
621 (registered) plus a grey zone of unregistered

aeros beta 1 for odroid u3 has 26 registered users.
