software Classic   software Classic : A-EON Technology Acquires Personal Paint
posted by amigakit on 27-Nov-2014 15:33:19 (23238 reads)
A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has taken over the development of Personal Paint from Cloanto. The two companies had already started to cooperate in 2014 which resulted in the release of Personal Paint 7.2 and 7.3. These are the first new versions for several years, with the latest native versions available now on AMIStore for both AmigaOS 4.1 and AmigaOS 3.x.

As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively develop and own all future AmigaOS versions of Personal Paint (including possible MorphOS and AROS ports). Additionally, A-EON and Cloanto will share joint ownership of Classic Amiga versions up to version 7.2, while Cloanto may continue to work on future non-Amiga versions.

Matthew Leaman, A-EON Managing Director, said, "A-EON Technology is proud to conclude this agreement with Cloanto. Personal Paint always had a strong following with Classic Amiga users and we are excited to drive it's future." Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder added, "I've been an avid user of Personal Paint for many years. It became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG graphics. These advanced features allowed Personal Paint to replace Deluxe Paint in Commodore's Amiga computer software bundles."

Personal Paint was the first commercial Amiga graphics program to break the 2Mb chip RAM barrier and to support PowerPC CPUs. However, it also included numerous other unique features which made it a favourite with many Classic Amiga owners. These included: professional colour reduction and merge, multiple brushes, filters, animation, file format plugins and stereograms together with PostScript and 24-bit printing. The constant reinvention of the possible applications of animated GIFs (also thanks to the expiration of related patents) helped drive continued demand for Personal Paint's exceptional support for palette based modes and optimised GIF code.

Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana commented on the transfer, "I am delighted to see future Amiga Personal Paint development efforts in the hands of an extremely motivated and talented team. I would also like to pay special thanks to Trevor. Without his generous commitment, the Amiga community wouldn't be as alive and kicking as it still is today."

In a MorphOS version, we can remove the need for this of course.

Need to get enough MOS user pledges now :) If the genuine demand is there, we will do it.

Would an AROS version be needed if it worked ootb?

On that note I was going to buy the classic version however I don't agree with the handling fee.

How will you survey this demand, are you setting up a poll on mzone or similar ?

Are you sure? 7.2 needs bullet as much as 7.3 (it's used for the VectorText).

Describe "does not work" in a bit more detail. If it simply doesn't start at all please can you tell me the error code. (type 'set' imediatly after running from shell ppaint to see the value of 'rc')

You have to copy bullet.library from OS 3.x. MorphOS doesnt have it either.

Maybe we need to develop dummy bullet.library, I dont think full implementation is required at this date...

PPaint uses the bullet API for the VectorText feature (essentially the smoothly scalable text objects). On AmigaOS4 it uses this API via the DiskFont library, so the important part is the API to access the font engines. Is there an API compatable replacement for that
under MOS (or AROS for that matter).

Just quickly reminded myself of how the code works, and bullet.library is not opened until required, and only if the font being rendered requires it.

So I'm unsure of why the 68k version should require it, until you try and render a font.

[edit]
It looks like libnix is opening the bullet.library, as looking at a snoopy log it's been opened very early on before PPaint has started opening librraies for it's own use.

thanx

regarding the error I will do some testing on weekend and create a log

bullet.library I do not know. Personal Paint 7.2 always worked without asking for bullet.library at startup. On Aros 68k it might be solvable by copying bullet.library from 3.X but on the other Aros versions it would be a problem. On Aros freetype2 is used (on MorphOS I do not know).

You probably used ObtainInfo() or ReleaseInfo() in vararg form and if not inlined it needs global BulletBase. This again triggers libauto to automatically open BulletBase for you (to provide global).

Mmh, is this similar to truetype fonts? There is freetype.library (2.4) but that is it.

The diskfont.library has some bullet API it seems. I dont know much about that but diskfont.library in MorphOS is from AROS, so... :)
