software OS4   software OS4 : ADRipper 1.12 released
   posted by Trixie on 28-Apr-2015 15:47:55 (2188 reads)
A substantial update to ADRipper, the CD audio extractor and converter for AmigaOS4, has been released. You can download it from OS4depot.net, and it is also delivered via AmiUpdate.

Installation notes (IMPORTANT!):

* Unpack the archive and copy the ADRipper drawer to your location of choice.
* DO NOT mix files from this release with an older installation!
* The plugin API has changed. Older encoders WILL NOT work with this version of ADRipper! In order to avoid potential problems, all encoder plugins (previously available as separate downloads) are now distributed with the main program.
* The "Developers" and "Translators" drawers are optional. You can safely remove them if you don't plan to translate ADRipper or develop new plugins for it.

Release notes for this version:

- development and maintenance taken over by Daniel "Trixie" Jedlicka
- new encoder plugin: AAC
- now distributed with all plugins that have been developed so far
- fixed a crash when going to Preferences (via toolbar) after iconification
- fixed a menu bug that allowed accessing some temporarily unavailable functions after iconification
- updated memory allocation routines to use OS4's new memory system
- updated GUI initialization routines to use new Intuition features
- various fixes and improvements to the GUI
- new ADRipper logo (see the About requester)
- removed program window snapshotting because it was buggy (this feature will be reimplemented using the new Window Class snapshotting mechanism, once it becomes publicly available)
- the program icon is no longer added to AmiDock automatically at startup (I consider this behaviour quirky; it may get reimplemented but it'll never again become a default setting)
- in connection with the above, the NODOCKICON tooltype/keyword added in V1.9 is now ignored
- reworked the main program locale catalog
- localized all encoder plugins, added many translations
- assembled all available documentation into a single AmigaGuide file
- updated the plugin API documentation and example code
- recompiled the main program and all plugins against the latest public SDK
- linked with the latest libcddb to allow better CDDB support in future releases (many thanks to Fredrik Wikstrom for porting the library!)
- added a stack cookie to ensure optimum performance
- resolved all compiler warnings

@fingus

Such a bug report is about as useful as Lady Gaga in showbusiness Please find my contact e-mail address in the "ADRipper.guide" documentation file, and send me:

- a more detailed information about your system (OS version?)
- more information about how you have installed ADRipper, and how you start the program (from the Shell? from the Workbench icon?)
- preferably a Snoopy log showing the process of the program starting, up to the point that the error occurs.

Thank you!

I downloaded this. For some reason I thought it was a port. But to my surprise the size was small and it had a native GUI. Looks like quite a nice and capable utility. I tested it with a CD single I had left in my tray and it even found the track listings Good job.

My only gripe would be that it doesn't scan for CD devices and must be told. Lookked a bit silly when it said there was no CD when I knew there was one in my drive.

It also scanned my HD when it loaded for a while whatever that was about. It didn't tell me what it was doing. Also defaulting to PCM was a strange choice.

Surely it uses some ported stuff (such as various encoding libraries: MP3lame, FLAC etc.) but otherwise it's an original, fully native AmigaOS4 program with a slick ReAction GUI. It was developed by Adrien aka CentaurZ, then I took over to take care of the maintenance.

Looks like it relies on preferences to select the drive, the default being CD0:. If someone can point me to a CD device scanning code example, I'll try to key it in.

So there are still users with more than one CD device in their system? I barely find any use for one, let alone two

Possibly scanning and registering the plugins, I'll have a closer look.

Also defaulting to PCM was a strange choice.

That is a legacy thing. Historically, ADRipper was only distributed with the built-in PCM plugin. Other plugins (CentaurZ developed two: MP3 and Ogg Vorbis, I developed the rest) had to be downloaded manually from OS4depot. Now that all plugins are in the package, I think it would make sense to change the default to, say, MP3.

Thanks for your input, and if you have some more, please contact me via the e-mail address found in the "ADRipper.guide" documentation file. Better than discussing things in a forum.

Yes, I'm afraid he's packed up all his Amiga activities. What a gig loss, he was a great programmer! But the development of ADRipper goes on, and a new version will be released in May.

@fingus

That seems to be an old issue with ADRipper. See here: http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=34202&forum=32#628024

@Bender:

Thanks for your help.

"Out of Memory Error" means AISS is not installed, funny!

It works now.

@Bender + fingus

Fixed for version 1.13, thank you for reporting!

The error message came up because the original code assumed failure not from a missing image, but from bitmap object creation. So the program thought that the object failed because of memory, not because the source image file was not found. What is indeed hilarious here is that the missing image in question referred to some half-finished eyecandy that was never used in the program, so the file was in fact not needed at all

Really bad news

CentaurZ also made sone really nice AmiDock dockies that needs IMHO some improvements... Maybe. Can you get development of them?

I'm afraid I can't I have projects of my own to take off, and ADRipper is already draining too much of my free time. Digging in somebody else's code isn't the greatest fun under the Sun, and I just can't imagine taking more of this.
