Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Public Release of MorphOS 3.8 Featuring Sam460 Support
   posted by ASiegel on 15-May-2015 10:55:23 (9647 reads)
The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.8, which introduces support for ACube´s Sam460 series of mainboards and numerous Radeon graphics cards from AMD´s X1000 and HD series. In addition to various performance improvements related to the Quark kernel, Exec, 3D graphics and video playback, MorphOS 3.8 also adds the ability to use state-of-the-art 4K displays in their native resolution. For a more extensive overview of the included changes, please read our release notes.

As usual, existing MorphOS users can update to the latest release entirely for free. Sam460 owners who are interested to register MorphOS for their system will be able to do so for 49 EUR.

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.8 is available for download in our files section.

IIRC, you must prove your hardware is broken to get a valid keyfile.

@ilbarbax

Just remember that MacMini G4 >1.25 GHz with updated overlay handling in 3.8 allows to watch most of 720p movies without framedrops.

@ilbarbax

There is no such a thing as moving licence. Anyway registering MorphOS on Sam costs only 49 euros.

Nice news!
Also more sales for ACube I hope!

@OlafS25

Perhaps it's because PPC460 has 440 core inside. IIRC.

Hi

Just tried MOS 3.8 on Sam460 + Radeon R7 265.

Unfortunately since R7 265 (Pitcairn RadeonHD 7800) is not supported it stops after loading Uboot "Could not find any valid modes."

Edit: I also tried booting from on board SM-502, it also didn't work...Same message from UBoot althogh I chose "boot from on on board graphics card"

I hope that MOS 3.9 support R7/R9 series...

You did not even load the boot.img.

From what I see you failed inside UBoot selecting the right files/options.

I guess you tried booting from SD card. Use a CD for installation/testing. It is recommended,

The CD/SD Card however will be fully operational. No need to install anything for testing.

Make sure you follow the installation/boot instructions mentioned here:

http://morphos.de/installation

It is not MorphOS´s fault when you fail booting :)

Well done!

Quote:
•Added support for the X1000 series of Radeon graphics cards.

Quote:
•added framebuffer only (no hardware 2D/3D acceleration) support for some HD2xxx/HD3xxx/HD4xxx/HD5xxx/HD6xxx series Radeon graphics cards

So I was right when I wrote GFX support will be problem.

@SinanG

Regarding your comment on MorphZone you really tried booting a non supported card.

In that case you can replace it with a supported one or remove it to boot MorphOS using the build in gfx component.

@pavlor

At least we supported the most basic cards so far and not force the user to swap cards like it was needed on Pegasos2. Also these drivers may get improved in the future and the update will be free.

In fact the drivers you have on disc are free to use and available for testing, while Pegasos2 owner were force to swap cards as OS4 did not work at all with several cards. And they had to pay for this experience.

I think the MorphOS Team did a good job in not delaying the release any further. Most systems will boot MorphOS without any hardware change.

In my personal opinion applications which need those hi-end cards are near to non existing on our systems. I can only speak for MorphOS and there RTCW is still the game with the most hardware requirements, but it runs quite nice, even on old 9600 cards.

@ SinanG

Seems that you need to remove any non compatible graphics cards for it to boot from the onboard graphics.
So no HD6670, Hd7750 or R7 cards
