How is the Emulated AmigaOS 4 experience compared to NG Amiga Hardware?
Performance, Window redrawing speed etc.

CPU: 500-1000 MHz G3 (integer), 100 MHz G3 (FPU) on Core i5.
RAM: 128 MB Fast RAM limitation (not enough for Odyssey web browser), Z3 RAM useable only as SWAP (not reliable).
GFX: No compositing, no verlay, no 3D, 68k GFX card driver, 4 MB GFX RAM limitation - slower redrawing is noticeable in higher resolutions (eg. 1680x1050 16 bit I use), but nothing unbearable. However, UAEGFX is muuuuuch faster on the same hardware (not supported by WinUAE/OS4).
NET: 1 MB/s max.
HDD: Using filedisks is slower than real HDD.

Other limitations: File transfer between guest and host (I use filedisk and OS3 for this purpose).


My summary: Although inferior in nearly all aspects to real hardware, WinUAE/OS4 would be well useable with more than current 128 MB RAM.

Performance under emulation on a Microsoft Surface 3 is ok providing you reduce the screen resolution in WinUAE to 640x480 otherwise you get garbled sound.

And I would second Pavlor's remarks about the graphics limitations under emulation.

Running Amiga OS4.1 FE Classic under emulation is pretty much designed as a limited feature demo compared to using OS 4.1FE on an actual Next Generation machine.

I have probably more powerful hardware, but never had such problems. Did you try PCI sound card emulation? Should demand less CPU speed than Paula emulation+AHI.

Ssolie did mention on AmiWest that there wasnt any official efforts made from Hyperion towards supporting WinUAE, but he did allude to it being useful.

That said, what seems to be a brewing co-operation between Cloanto, Amikit, Aeonkit and Toni might give hope to Hyperion removing memory limitations. Even with the memorylimit AO4 is semi useful to all parties getting more users that spend money on apps and OS.
Ssolie mentioned that he had hammered home to Aeonkit just how profitble Amistore would be.
More users for storefronts due to WinUAE/Amikit will increase transactions which will help 3rd party developers and OS funding.

An OS4 developer stated there already exists a kernel which removes the memory limit. So, there's nothing to remove or patch.

It's Hyperion that do NOT want to release it.

There may be other problems (such kernel may contain code from former developers, not useable without license etc.), so we don´t know for sure.

Update to (not so) Final Update was announced and will be released after X5000 version. As of 4.2... when it is done.

Many features intended for 4.2 were introduced with FE. Announced major 4.2 feature is support for multiple CPU cores.
