Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Cow3D V6 for Warp3D Nova
posted by amigakit on 14-Jan-2017 13:42:32 (12870 reads)
Alain Thellier has released a new version of Cow3D which now has support for Warp3D Nova.

The latest version 6 is available to download on Aminet.

Cow3D is a benchmarking and testing tool for 3D on the Amiga. It also supports the older Warp3D and Warz3D software renderer.

Alain has included the Shader source code in the package for Warp3D Nova which is the first 3D software to support modern Shaders on AmigaOS. Now users have the ability to compare and contrast between old fixed pipeline 3D systems such as Warp3D and the new modern Warp3D Nova.

ah I love benchmarks on our miggies

X1000, Radeon 7950-3GB DDR5

Warp 3D: 153 FPS
Warp3D Nova: 450

@ zzd10h

hmm results bit strange when X1000 Warp3DNova results are lower than Sam460 with slower Radeon card ??

The previous Warp3D version of Cow3D was slower on the X1000 too.

Link.

It would be interesting to see how the Sam460 performs in other pure Warp3D tests.

I got 72.8 fps in Crisot's Universe Two demo and 72.8 fps in both the PSX Engine executables.

Universe Two.

PSX Engine

Almost Forgot

X1000 Radeon R9 280 933Mhz core 5000Mhz VRAM.

Cow3D Warp3D = 150fps

Cow3D Warp3D Nova =423fps

Anyone else getting an error 403 when trying to download from Aminet?

Don't see it on OS4Depot

TJ

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /dev/src/Cow3D.lha on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Well done Alain and Hans !

Thanks.

The difference would be even wider if the cow had more vertices.

The X5000 appears to benefit from superior memory & I/O controllers. The X5000 gets faster CPU based transfer rates to/from VRAM, and it shows.

You must be basing that on TiredOfLife's results alone, because other Sam460's are getting different results:
Your X1000 (Radeon HD 7950): 450 fps
zzd10h's X1000 (Radeon R7-250x): 445 fps
Rob's X1000 (Radeon R9 280): 423 fps

Spectre660's Sam460ex (Radeon HD 7750): 352 fps
Spectre660's Sam460ex (Radeon R7-250x): 416 fps
TiredOfLife's Sam460ex (Radeon HD 7770): 489 fps

I'm not sure why the Sam460ex results are so spread out. Perhaps different RAM types? Or different UBoot versions? Maybe TiredOfLife uses Sam460ex_setup to boost VRAM transfers? Cow3D seems to be quite dependent on the VRAM write/transfer speed (CPU based, not DMA).

@Hans

Isn't the purpose of GPU to transfer everything needed in it's vram then let it work at full speed?
To get max performance transfer from Ram to Vram should be limited or even not performed until next level/etc. Everything needed to your app or games etc should be fitted in the vram then once done, load what you need or transfer in the background the data for the next steps.
That way all should run at the same speed I guess no matter what the machine you run your code in is.

Don't use Sam460ex_setup.
Did have L2 cache switched on.

Switched it off and got 456 fps.

Cheers
