News   News : Poseidon Crack Spread
posted by _Steve_ on 5-Nov-2003 12:37:19 (4183 reads)
Yesterday, USB Stack Author Chris Hodges released on his website an account of how he has discovered several mailing lists are carrying messages detailing on how to crack his program.

According to Chris Hodges, this happened under the fake name "Dan Gaines" and, as a smoekescreen, by using a freemailer in London as well as an anonymous proxy located in the UK. But the high amount of grammar mistakes in the posting would make it unlikely that this person was a native speaker. "Dan Gaines" would have been registered only a week ago, by which this seems to be a thoughtfully planned assault.

As the author states, the effects on the development of Poseidon are still to be considered - but the effect on his motivation would have been already devastating.

Read his account from his website.

Whilst I agree that cracks and publishing cracks are a no no I find the line of reasoning that tries to link it back to Elbox a bit, erm, strange.

Seems a bit "Blame Canada"

A bit convoluted to say the least. I know he and Elbox have not seen eye to eye for a long time, but to extrapolate they did it from the editor used being made by a polish guy.... and elbox being a polish company... seems extreme. However, the fact the crack has been publicised is a sad thing in light of the lack of new decent software for the Amigas.

What a twonk!

No-one deserves for thier hard work to be stolen like this, but conspiricy theory??? C'mon!

Chris did it occur to you that a)There are a lot of Polish Amiga users
b)The guy is probably using a cracked version of the editor to.
c)Elbox was probably blowing hot air like everyone else around here.

I'll repeat again for those of you not paying attention - What a twonk!

Another issue to consider:

Will there be a ready market for stolen Amiga software for the A1 running OS4, at least
at first?

I remember being influenced by a friend who then help me buy my 1st Amiga (an A500) with various accessories as well as some software, (DPaint & WP etc.) spending more than I had intended of course!

After a while I asked him to borrow some of the great software he had just to try it and he refused! I was surprised but that request was followed by a lecture on software developers and how the Amiga was a small market etc. etc.

I guess I was very naive, and may still be.. but I learned my lesson. That could very well be the case here, at least in the beginning.

i am allready a regged spider 2 user (was one of the last to register i guess) , but i will explain all to you why such an incident has happened.

it was cracked because of:

1. Elbox products is no longer supported by author and no registrations will be accepted (amithlon , mediator etc)

2. the Date of the ending of poseidon was when alot of people was AWAY (summer time) and alot is furious since they didnt get the chance to register.

3. most of all , elbox still send you the lousy email that you must contact Chris about Poseidon registration , and that its downloadable via aminet , and when you go to aminet, what do u find? .. a demo THAT TIMES OUT after 5 seconds!

sure i vote for registration and sure i am supporting developers but!!!!!!!! i find the crack fully understandable as there is bound to be alot of users who doesnt have a clue whats going on the net and since elbox still!!!! send out the emails , YES you get an demo of poseidon and you can upgrade still..

WORST OF all is that there is still people buying hw from elbox after this (spiders).

i dont have any problems against the mediator or other products in the elbox catalouge but this poseidon issue is REALLY bad and it seems it backfire\d at chris.

anyway it was on the mediator mailing list that the "HOW TO CRACK" description was posted first,
and a month or so ago alot of turmoil started on the board because of people who had bought the spider and couldnt get it (poseidon) regged!.

and i doubt this has anything to do with chris beeing an MORPHOS fan, which some people on here like to think.

cheers

pps:developer or not, this is stuff that shouldnt happen..

You learn a new thing every day, had no idea that Chris was
a MorphOS fan.

Still no reason why I should, but I think people are starting
to go a bit mad on this prejudice against people that live breath
and sleep MorphOS/Pegasos - not that they actually have it
( a very tiny minority seem to ) but the accusation that everything
is because they are "blue".

Wearing a little thin.

@Toaks

Sounds like another case of companies/developers fighting and the ordinary user losing out.

Just how many times do we have to go through this?

Chris Hodges really seems to have it in for Elbox. I don't believe for one second Elbox would be behind this, as seems to be suggested. Never understood why Chris stopped taking registration fees from Spider users, seems like economic nonsense to me. Secondly I paid my registration fee for Poseidon which I use with a Spider II and I think it's unfair that Spider users won't be getting updates. Chris has had as much registration money from me as anyone else using his stack.

On a side note, it is a great bit of software and I won't be without it, and thanks for the great work Chris, but all this politics and moralising!? Yuk.

My gut feeling at the minute is: role on a Poseidon-beating Elbox USB stack .

daveP:dont be blind please, this is exactly why pegasos owners doesnt buy hyperion games etc, or ask.. is it really worth buying (though they allready DO know the game from PC).

but i agree that predejuice is dangerous but atm
i am pretty sure thats the reason and thats why everything as it is atm , no games are on the official lists except for 1 official pegasos game etc.

i hope this will stop but here you see a very good example of what the community split can do to our products.

chris could have sold XXX more keys for poseidon if he wasnt a guy with morals (like i am too),
instead he might have lost alot of potential buyers because of this CRACK.

uncharted:well i have warned all about this , it wont ever stop and it will most likely even get worse...

a good example is clickboom.com , they stopped all their titles and removed em from the website because of a certain competitor infiltrating them and it now seems clickboom are long gone.

another one is apc-tcp , who is most likely putting down its axe due to alot of problems regarding issues which i cant speak of here, all in all no matter whom its about (blue or red) this is VERY SAD!, software wars is what killed the Atari, achimedes etc...amiga never had problems with it...but its happening now...

please wake me up from this (K)nightmare!

cheers

After reading the article on his website, I can't say that he has said anything outrageously unreasonable. As to "conspiracy theories" I recall what happened to my website provider immediately after I posted "A Matter of Faith". That event involved a dozen different high-speed DSL and Cable connections simultaneously attacking a single IP at my provider in order to overcome their firewall. Whether it sounds "round the bend" or not, that, gentlemen, is a conspiracy, and it did happen. Please, before you grab for paint brushes, please know the facts first.

@Billsey

What facts do you think we should know? We have the case as Chris presents it on his site and it leaps to some tremendous conclusions.

Dave.

Regardless of who has cracked it, it is cracked and another developer is feeling demotivated by his work being used without permission.

It just raises the question once more of why developers would bother to develope for a low income/low gratitude market.

Firstly, under no circumstances would I ever condone the piracy of software and I have no sympathy for anyone caught cracking software, so whoever is responsible for cracking Posiedon really should take a long, hard look at himself and his activities - they are NOT appreciated.

That said, I do understand WHY Posiedon was cracked, even if I do not condone it. I have kept myself quite well informed regarding the Chris/Elbox situation and I have to say that while Chris has produced an excellent piece of software with Poseidon and is obviously a competant programmer, he lacks a business sense and I feel he has been unreasonable in negotiations with Elbox.

Further, I believe it was wrong of Chris to suddenly drop support for the Mediator and it's USB cards. Not only does this waste precious development time and money (on Elbox's side) but it also completely disrupts the normal Amiga user. Bearing in mind that the work to port Spider drivers to Poseidon was actually done by Elbox's developers, I believe it is Chris who has been unreasonable during this whole thing. I think that basically he has a poor business sense - perhaps that's just a consequence of being a one-man-band.

I still hope that Chris and Elbox can come to an understanding and put this whole issue behind them, but in reality I think it would probably be much better if Elbox now cut their losses with Chris and released their own USB Stack instead (as they originally plannned to do in the 1st place).

If Chris is reading this thread, I would ask him to please not misunderstand - the Poseidon package IS an excellent piece of software, Amiga users DO appreciate your support for the Amiga platform, and we all hope you continue development with Poseidon. But in my personal opinion, I feel you were wrong to pull support for the Spider - especially since we have paid a full registration fee already. There are no positive results from that decision whatsoever I'm afraid.

Brian

dirk-B: erm well ofcourse i know that but that doesnt justify that they stopped all activity + freezed current development for amigaone/os4, you simply missunderstood the whole "SOFTWAR problem"

cheers
