Count me in! I also have the very same pb: audio alone runs forever but audio + Ethernet (AWeb or YAM or RDesktop, 68k or PPC, or whatever) = freeze after 5 to 30 min. And for the record:
- my A1 CPU is properly cooled (and monitored btw) - my A1 CPU vcore is properly set - my A1 is not fixed - my A1 uses only recommanded HW (bought from a dealer) - my OS4 is clean (udpate3 with no user-startup, no WBStartup)
Conclude yourself now.

Ditto on the bzzzz... etc.
Mine happens when surfing with IBrowse while listening to tunes. I've set AmigaAMP to load the entire song into memory, yet this doesn't help at all. I can browse for hours before it happens, or minutes, so for now I'm going to discount the heat issue.
However, I am getting a new CPU fan and sink "just in case". I have the correct VCore setting for my CPU, it is an unfixed A1XE-G4, and the memory has been checked.

I use RDesktop because I need to. RDesktop never seems to crash at all to be fair to that piece of software. I also have a SBLive.
@FuZion (Me)
Well blow me! It's just happened again right now. Online, IBrowse running, but not being used (The window was just hidden down in the corner. I had just run xMame, grabbed a screenshot of OutRun (For alexw's new version of xMameGUI, it's nice). I was streaming audio using the latest TuneNet (0.54) which was streaming audio from the net & "Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......". It happened again. I cannot point the blame at TuneNet as this happens with AmigaAMP & Amplifier too.
I was doing all this, occasionally browsing then coming back to xMame, for approx 1-2 hours before the crash happened.
This is with my increased VCore, now 1.59 from 1.54. The CPU is extremely cool. I can touch the heat sink & barely feel any heat at all.
Next up, it the WBStartup & user-startup strip. But not tonight, it's getting late now.

Hey, it seems all that have this problem seem to be XE owners?!?
Have you heard anyone with a µA1-C with this problem?

It's funny, but I haven't suffered from this problem since I attached an internal fan to my A1XE (unfixed). Basically the fan just blasts cool air over the mother board near to the CPU and everything appears ok.
I did a test this evening and disconnected my Internal fan (it is pretty hot in the UK at the moment also) and sure enough the machine locked up within 5-10 minutes of copying large files, downloading my mail and playing MAME.
I turned the machine off, let it cool down re-attached my fan and starting copying the large files again (XMAME exe's!), pulling down mail, streaming music off the Internet and playing MAME.
No problems at all (..and still going now).
Now I know this doesn't prove anything (especially to the people who say they have adequate cooling) but it would be interesting to know if this fixes any of the machines with this problem.
Cheers, Bean.
P.S. My voltage is set at 1.59.

Differently from other people, you are cooling down the motherboard and its other chips (not only the CPU). Maybe there's another chip getting too hot?_________________ La fortuna è cieca. La sfiga ci vede benissimo. |

This is pretty weird. I can very easily touch my heat sink (If I've got the name right, it's one of those spikey metal things on my CPU). I can even touch it near the base & it's still quite cool. Is this right?
Lets say, even the heat sink isn't quite 'on' the CPU, the heat that those things generate would still conduct through the heat sink wouldn't it? I seem to remember (AGES ago) that it got warm so I got a new fan. It's quite a big thing & I've aligned it so that the blades of the fan are directly over the CPU rather than the center because the centre has that 3cm or so flat bit that doesn't blow air (The middle of the fan).
(Also, I have the side casing off tonight because I changed the VCore settings & didn't know if I'd have to go back in there).
One way or another, by hook or by crook. We've gotta find this little bugger!

Sounds like you got the cooling covered (though I'm no expert), I can only tell you whats in my system.
My CPU fan is the same one that came with the machine. The metal sides of the heatsink, not the main heatsink spikes, but the bits either side get pretty hot and I'm not sure if this is normal. But as I said when I started to get some stability problems (summer last year) I went out and bought a tower case fan (from Maplin) and stuck it in.
I haven't had trouble since (and I've also streamed a lot of music from the NET while testing TuneNet ) but I did manage to recreate the problem tonight with the MB FAN off.
((..machine still going with same type of stress testing (as usual)..)).
Cheers, Bean.

I have a Lian-Li aluminium tower that comes with: 1 fan in the PSU 1 fan in the top of the case 1 fan in the back of the case 2 fans in the front of the case
As well as these, I have the standard fan supplied with the A1 motherboard, as well as a "PCI slot" fan that sucks air in and blows it over the CPU.

Good call! The fan in the PSU, in addition to the fan over the CPU & the one on the back extracting hot air, I have one in the PSU too which is pretty swish.
It's at the bottom of the PSU (Facing the floor of the tower) which sucks hot air up (Directly above my CPU fan) & kicks it ut the back there too meaning I have 2 'exhaust' fans.
I'm with Bean though, I'm no expert & I'm sure someone could make this better. I'd like a water cooled system, this is pretty quiet as it is but the cost of those things is beyond me at the moment.

What is your CPU? 7455? 7451? 800MHz? 933MHz?
VCORE? 1.59 is what you've mentioned here a couple of times.
Do you have XE? Fixed or not?
What software, other than OS4 itself, is started in your system?
What hardware, other than the mainboard, is installed?

Sorry, I drifted there.
I have a 7451 @ 800Mhz. Yeah, the VCore is now 1.59 (It was 1.54 upto a few hours ago), non fixed MB, I use a PCI Sil card with an 80Gb HD on the Primary channel, a CD Writer & DVD reader on the secondary. A 1.44Mb floppy drive. I have Radeon 7500 (64mb I think) on the AGP port & A Sound Blaster Live sound card.
I've got the USB headers on the motherboard wired up to the front of my tower (Which I've not used with Update 3 as yet), I'm connected to broadband via a router as well as my PC & Playstation 2, all via the same modem & line. The router has only been here for about 2-3 months, prior to that I had my A1 connected direct to the net through the modem.
My case has a quite sexy blue LED for the HD & a green LED for the power. The green one is broken & I need to replace it. Fluffy dice have been removed until OS4 final is out
The rest is external hardware: Monitor, keyboard, mouse, zaurus (Through USB not at the moment for example), audio cables from my mixer for recording & to my amp for playing. Did I mention the fluffy dice?

Onto the software...
WBStartup = AmiDock, ASyncWB, ClickToFront, ContextMenus, DefIcons, DepthtoFront, GLMatrix (May be removed due to a strange interference sound when playing music through AMPlifier at the same time), OS4Reboot, RAWBInfo, TitleClock & USBStart.
Startup-Sequence = This is the standard Update 3 file, my only adjustment is the PowerIcons colours (Bright green? Nice )
user-startup = MUI startup script, "Run >NIL Mixer SETLEVELS RAGUI", Mount KCON: & KRAW:, "Run NIL: C:ScreenRotate", "setenv CLASSPATH JAmiga/classpath/" & "setenv JAMIGALIBPATH JAmiga/libs/"
Assigns = MUI: AmiSSL: YAM: MAME: golded: devkits: UAE: DCA: FreeDB:
I can't think of anything else that may be launched upon startup.

Have you tried to move the soundcard to a different PCI slot?

If it IS heat, then why does it only happen when using the net???
I always have AmIRC and YAM running and most of the time also IBrowse, but with these programs I have only got the hang perhaps 2-3 times in the last year. And of course I also always have AmigaAmp running.
It is not until I start something more continuous net activity, like streaming (TuneNet, ANR, AmigaAmp, AMPlifier), someone on my FTP server (RC-FTPd), I do FTP myself (AmFTP, ATC), or transferring a lot over IRC-DCC (AmIRC) that I get a hang sooner or later. Regarding file transfer I usually manage to transfer everything I (or someone else) need before the lockup. But streaming I usually do forever, that is, until it locks up.
I have an unfixed XE with OK cooling, RAM and VCore. I have an SB Audigy and a SIL680.
One thing I've been wondering about is if it only happens to us who have a 100Mbit connection, that is from the A1 to the nearest point (rounter, switch, modem, whatever). Those who don't have this problem may use eth3com at 10Mbit because their ADSL modem or whatever is only 10Mbit..??? _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

I have looked at the signatures. I have looked at the profiles and user's webpages. So far, all XEs. Anyone with a similar problem on XE or on another model A1 please report to the thread. Steff?
Best Wishes, #6

Please do NOT try this before you have investigated it fully.
But I went into Freescale.com and checked out the specs for 7451. All their models @800MHz states 1.75V Core not 1.54/1.59V which you run it at. The first version @600MHz was specified for 1.6V core. This could indeed be the cause for instability in your system.
Could someone that have knowledge in this matter confirm?
